Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): 3 leadership positions. I’m not going into detail to protect my confidentiality, but I would say my ECs were great. I also think they showed fit with the major I applied to.
Job/Work Experience: summer job
Volunteer/Community service: yes
Summer Activities: job
Essays: I would give my common app essay was a 9/10. I’m very proud of it. Hopefully other colleges feel the same way about it that I do haha. Supplement maybe a 6/10. It wasn’t that beautifully written but I thought it gave cohesive information and demonstrated fit. But I was rejected, so it probably wasn’t that good haha.
Teacher Recommendation: Great (saw one)
Counselor Rec: probably good
Additional Rec:
Interview: went well

Income Bracket: I do not see how it matters. But enough that I did not apply for financial aid.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): No

Reflection

Strengths: ACTs are above average I guess, which makes them good considering this was for Cornell. I personally think my ECs and essays were great.
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I tried to demonstrate fit with the program I applied to. But I did not try to make any “hooks” as this question asks.
Weaknesses: GPA. It’s not awful, but it’s probably low for Cornell.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Probably my GPA. There’s really nothing interesting for me to say. I’m just posting this because I read a lot of results threads before applying so it’s only right for me to contribute so others get that same chance.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Haven’t heard back from anywhere else yet. I’m sure I’ll be accepted somewhere I like though!
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: This was a silly question when I read it on last year’s results thread. And it still is. Especially to end the entire post… Especially for those of us rejected… haha anyways, good luck to all future applicants. And congratulations to all those accepted.

School Type: Private, really good one.
Ethnicity: Asian/White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: >$250,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): dunno, gay? maybe? dunno. probably not.
Reflection

Strengths:
I said that I’m a really nice guy, maybe they saw it in my essays? I’m very active in project 10, which helps counsel LGBT students at my school who are in need of an understanding ear. Also, my school usually gets about 60% of it’s ED applicants to Cornell accepted, so my chances were always decent.

Weaknesses:
Compared to most people, I really don’t do jack. No sports, not really any service time except the time spent on my non-profit (which is very considerable, about 4 hrs a week). I’m half-asian too, dunno if that’s a weakness either, but maybe.
Why you think you were accepted: Cornell and my school share an excellent relationship, and I was good enough to take advantage of that fact.
Where else were you accepted: Nowhere yet, rescinding all other applications.

High school’s House of Representatives
A few smaller things

Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: A ton of tutoring and teaching for the community and peers
Summer Activities: Internship at IUPUI
Essays:
Common App - 10/10 About my inability to tell left from right due to being forced to switch handedness and also connected that to my blending of the arts and sciences (hard to explain…hehehe)
CoE essay - 8/10 Had humor and talked about my introduction to domestic robots. Did a good job of connecting what I wanted to pursue in comp sci with my personal childhood experience, but got more boring as it went on.

Teacher Recommendation: Pre-Calc and Calculus teacher - must have been very good. We’re pretty close and i did very well in his class despite struggling at first. Computer Science teacher - she likes me a lot and she is very active in promoting females in computer science, so I expect it was also very good. However, I did not see either of them.

Counselor Rec: Good - I visit her often and she’s very nice, but probably nothing super stellar
Additional Rec: From my internship professor/supervisor. Fairly general (we didn’t interact that often) but probably all good things. Most likely not very personal though.
Interview: None
Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Computer Science
State (if domestic applicant): Indiana
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large public, almost 5000 students.
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: $200,000+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection

Strengths: Upward trend in grades, very apparent love for computer science and art (a more rare combo), fairly good SAT I (at least nothing that would hurt me)
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: My dual passion for art and comp sci as well as my active tutoring around the community
Weaknesses: As a comp sci major, I should have better math. Freshman grades weren’t great (not sure how much they care).
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I had an upward trend for grades and a clear passion for computer science. As a female, that drive is somewhat rare so I think that, coupled with my essays, was why I was accepted. It really isn’t just about the numbers!
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Univ. Of Michigan, Purdue, withdrew all others
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: A female in comp sci with an early purpose and direction towards technology, a comp sci student with many art awards and an artistic background

Sidenote: You DO NOT have to have perfect stats to get in. People told me this, but I never believed it until I was accepted. I was and am by no means a perfect student or innately genius; I worked hard in high school with some success and some failure. Please never lose hope! With that said, also have low expectations so recovering from any rejection/deferral will be easier. Best of luck to you all! <3

Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc BC, AP Micro + Macro, AP Lit, Honors Physics (AP not offered), Honors Latin, Peer Leadership, Meteorology
Major Awards: AP Scholar, National Commended Scholar, local historical society award (nothing particularly grand)

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): President/Founder of archery club, high ranked competitive Pokémon TCG player (it sounds silly, but I wrote an essay in additional information on it and it really was an important part of my life for the last several years), peer leadership program to mentor high school freshmen, 4 years of J.V. Cross Country, 2 years of J.V. tennis
Job/Work Experience: Camp counselor at local day camp, worked as a waiter and archery helper at my sleepaway camp
Volunteer/Community service: Basically none. Peer Leadership might count towards community service hours.
Summer Activities: Sleepaway camp for freshmen and sophomore year–important since I got my passion for archery there, Cornell Summer College for 2014 with an A+ in both classes
Essays: Very good. Also wrote an extra essay in additional information.
Teacher Recommendation: Phenomenal, told the story of improvement that my entire application was geared towards
Counselor Rec: Told the same story that the teacher recs did, so I’m assuming it was good
Additional Rec: Got a recommendation from my history professor at the Cornell Summer College–extremely helpful
Interview: Had an alumni interview, was told it went very well.

Applied for Financial Aid?: no
Intended Major: Undecided
State (if domestic applicant): New York
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Double legacy (father and both of his parents went to Cornell)

Reflection

Strengths: Overall story of improvement throughout high school (including extremely high grades junior and beginning of senior year), rigorous schedule, very good recommendations and essays, weird/unique extracurriculars, solid test scores
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: The entire application focused on my improvement. Started high school with a rather low GPA and very few EC’s, and completely turned it around into straight A’s and A+'s junior and first quarter of senior year along with starting an archery club and doing better in my sports. The person that was a freshmen/sophomore was completely different than the person applying.
Weaknesses: Very low cumulative GPA for an Ivy, lack of community service or research projects, lack mass of EC’s
Why you think you were accepted: I assume they liked my story of improvement, and they found archery and Pokémon EC’s unique and interesting
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to UVM
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Probably the Pokémon essay. It’s been an activity I’ve loved over the past few years and even managed to do quite well a few times. The community surrounding it is awesome and the weirdness factor is likely what made it look appealing.
