Official 2008 Yale Transfer Thread

Man I wish I would have gotten in.....but that's ok. I've made up my mind. I'm gonna try again next year. :)

Hang on, I'm still in high school, and I'd like to transfer to Yale when I get to college, but does this mean they're going to look at my high school record? I thought when you went into college, all they judged you on was your college record? And they look at your SAT scores when you apply as a transfer? What if you don't even take the SAT in high school?

But, say my college record as a transfer is IDEAL and I have the BEST college record out of all the applicants, and I'm exactly what Yale's looking for, but in contrast, my high school record is utterly atrocious and outrageously despicable. What are my chances? What if I've changed?

Haha nope. It's not that simple; your hs grades will always be evaluated, although the emphasis placed on them depends on how much time has passed since they were earned.

No one can answer this. Just give it a shot.

hey MrX,
if you transfer as a sophomore, both high school transcripts and SAT score are weighted much.Even if you didnt take SAT in high school, you can take it in your first college year.SAT is needed in all top schools sophomore transfer. So dont hold the idea of waiving it.
But if you would like to transfer as a junior, high school transcripts and sat are not wighted that much.i dont know more about junior transfer cuz i determine to transfer as a sophomore.check on the school transfer website if you want transfer as a junior.

take the SAT if you haven't already...they won't take a look at you without it if you're transferring as a sophomore. but even as a junior transfer i believe they still take a look at your high school record and SAT scores because, well, it's an ivy, ya know?

Does Yale even accept Junior transfers? I read on their website that they prefer sophomores.

Also, what if I finish 2 years of credits my freshman year in college? Would that technically make me a "junior" transfer?

Oh, also I have two last questions! If anyone can answer them, it would be lovely!

1) Does Yale look at your SAT 2's as well? If so, should you take 2 subjects or 3?

2) And does anyone know which classes I should sign up for my freshman year if I'm planning on transferring to Yale?

MrX you do know Yale accepts only about 3 % of the applicants. right?

Hey MrX

They definitely take junior transfers. The other transfer student I'm aware of and I are both junior transfers to Yale. I only took two SAT IIs... I don't think they mattered the least bit. Just do well and relax.

Just take classes that genuinely interest you. You'll probably do better that way. I don't think there are a specific set of classes Yale prefers. In fact, I'm pretty sure they don't care at all (as long as they aren't obviously easy), and are much more interested in finding out what else you do besides scoring a 4.0 or whatever.

Good luck! Try to enjoy the college you're at instead of focusing too hard on transferring to Yale. I spent a good portion of last year focusing so much on the transfer applications that I started having a miserable time at my old school.

MagiTF:
May I ask what classes you took before you transferred?

Also, Suddenquiet:

Oh, I'm aware of the stats. Yale actually accepts quite a few people each year from my high school; I'm aware of my competition and these people don't scare me.

Furthermore, keep in mind I'm still in high school. I'm barely figuring out NOW that I'm planning to transfer, hence my ignorance!

Hi Mr. X,

I got accepted to Yale as a junior transfer this year. My advice about transferring is this: you'll be more successful if you don't obsess about it. I really believe one of the things that helped my application is that I spent two years really invested in the school I was at, and didn't even think of transferring until January of my junior year. If you're constantly wondering things like "will this class make me look good to the transfer committee?" or "how will this activity look on my resume?" you never really enjoy the place you're at and trust me, that shows through on your application. So give yourself a break, congratulate yourself on getting in to what I'm sure is an awesome school, and just enjoy being young and in college for a while.

Anyone else on the transfer waitlist? I'm at another top 10, wondering if they want any additional information. Any suggestions at all? Also, to clear up something that was previously posted, waitlisted applicants weren't sent emails (I got a letter). Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

speakout..can you please post your stats and what you wrote about in your essay?? thanks

to speakout9386,
congrats^^could you share your backgrounds if you dont mind?and btw,i'm wondering if you think your current school is awesome, how will you state your transfer reasons in your essay?non-offence.just because i think my current school is not bad though...so i'm thinking about describe the transfer situation.
many thanx!

for loveyouu and gobackto2005:

My stats are posted on the transfer acceptance thread, they're not particularly great, and definitely not what got me in to Yale.

As for my background: I come from a small town in the South. As a junior in high school I got a scholarship to go to an international high school. After high school I went to a small, all women's liberal arts college. At that college I got super-involved in extracurriculars, academics, and personal relationships.

My reason for transferring was that I really wanted to major in an area that my current school did not offer. I tried to create my own major, and was denied by the curriculum committee several times. My academic advisor and dean were both aware of my situation, and they were actually the ones that suggested I look in to Yale as a transfer option. In my essay I explained all of this, and also talked a lot about why I loved the field I wanted to study, how I had prepared myself to study it, etc. I didn't spend hours strategizing about my apps, or pouring over past success stories; I was just honest about what Yale could offer me, and what I could offer them in return.

Good luck to you all!

Hey everyone,

Can someone help me out here? I'm a freshman at Harvard and utterly hate being here. I got into Yale last year and was set to go there until my parents forced me to apply to Harvard, and eventually go there. Like I said I hate being here. I applied to Yale to transfer but was unfortunately rejected.

I don't mean to be an egotist, but has anyone else here applied from Harvard? and for those who got in, what exactly led you to apply to Yale as a transfer student?

Thanks. I really don't mean to seem obnoxious, vain, or any of that. I just need to gauge myself a little better.

Thanks again!

I don't think it has anything to do with where you're from. It's not like they have a bias against certain school. I mean they let community college kids, non-ranked internationals and people from all sorts of background in....I have a feeling its the individual profile that gets you in/out, not the school reputation. At this point it's a lateral move (Some people around here even theorize that it might actually be *harder *because the burden of proof on your reason for wanting to transfer from a top-class university is that much higher).

At Yale's level, you really don't get the "oh this applicant wants to leave Harvard for us" aura you might get if you were 'trading down' to another less prestigious college.

Since you hate it so much, maybe your profile showed that with negative views in your "Why" essay, or a lack of ECs, and school involvement.

Just a thought.

peabody,
I just looked at your other posts and I'd guess that your 3.3 gpa really hurt your chances at transferring to Yale. Given that Y only took 24 people this year, even coming from H, that is pretty low. And you say that you had little contact with profs, so perhaps your LORs weren't particularly strong. Obviously your HS record was great, and after that college gpa, LORs and your reason for wanting to transfer would be the most important factors considered.

Does anyone know what the limits are to the length of the two essays? Both the "Why Yale?" and the topic of our own choice?

This was a fantastic thread. Congrats to all those who were admitted, and i wish the others success in all their endeavors. Coming from a Yale 2009 transfer, it’s been a pleasure reading this forum.

Sincerely,
TransferAccepted
