***Official 2011 Siemens Competition Thread***

I just submitted my project couple days ago. Quite relieved about that. Just wanted to make this so people can have a place to discuss their projects, questions, etc. So...anyone else doing Siemens and would like to share his or her topics???

oh right, i basically analyzed the sequence of molecular motors and did computational modeling with a bunch of softwares. i thought it was decent but not spectacular.

hey question, are you an individual or team member, and if an individual, do we just leave the team member names part of the forms blank? or write n/a. Yes I am just starting to fill out the forms -__-

yea, i’m in a 3-person team and i’m the leader (in name and in actuality, lol), just leave it blank if ur an individual. good luck bro!

How did you guys think of your project ideas? I’m a junior and hoping to enter next year.

My mentor basicaly gave me couple thousand pages (no joke lol) of existing literature of previous studies, and I had to learn several bioinformatics and simulation softwares. He gave us the target molecules, while we had to do the analysis and conclusions ourselves.

@mistervert it helps if you have research mentor. Contact researchers/professors at nearby colleges and see if you can possibly work on something during the summer or year. I researched breast cancer in a lab.

Yo guys, I recently submitted my project the other day and my mentor contacted me and told me that for whatever reason, her phone number listed is cut off from the last 4 digits - I did express overnight Fedex delivery and wanted them to deliver it in the morning. If I call them when they have my project, will they be able to make the correction? Any experience on that?

I’m hiring a courier service… sending it in tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Dang haha. How much did that set you back? Overnight FedEx was pretty expensive.

wanna share ur topics? dang it, i actually found 2 typos in my report today…what do i do? both are rather insignificant, but i’m a perfectionist lol.

btw, when do results come out???

damn yo…that’s CRYPTIC I would say…

it’s pretty expensive, but my parents are supportive so that’s good.

my topic was on crystal growth dynamics :)

Yes, it is expensive. I did overnight FedEx delivery and it was about $65. That said, I examined genome-wide epigenetic changes upon exposure to pollen in an environmental chamber and their roles in mediating allergic response severity.

Plant immunology over here. I had no idea that Fedex closed at 4 o clock on Saturdays, so I had to use same day…cost an arm and a leg.

Does anyone know if they put any weight on the executive summaries? Mine really sucked, and I’m a little worried… it says they use it for media purposes and such, but do they also rely on it to get background info? alksfjlkdf

They say the initial judging for semis is based soley on the research report portion, so not the exec summary or abstract i think.

does anyone know if semifinalists get an email or some other type of notification on the day results come out, or is it just like we check and hope our name is on the list?

^Do u know when results come out? I think you check online yourself, pretty straight-forward.

Results came out around October 24 last year, so I guess wait and pray 'til the end of this month? I’m just praying for semifinalist standing…it’s been my dream since 8th grade to place at one level of Siemens and Intel so hopefully that comes true. Oh, and I did a chemistry project and investigated stability of bonds on solid surfaces.

I think my essay was pretty good, but my abstract was horrible, so yeah. I’m kind of nervous about the whole process.
