my project was over 3D cell printing. I agree same day shipping was sooooo expensive, but i had no other option…

I also entered, but I thought the information packet on their website said results would be released on October 21.

I did a microbiology project and used USPS overnight, which cost $15. If you don’t mind me asking, why would you use FedEx over USPS?

Yeah I used USPS too, 17 bucks for overnight.
Did a mechanical engineering project.

Anyone think it’s a problem if I used spring clips instead of stapling the copies of the stuff together? I couldn’t manage to staple all of it…

@isk82live, you’re probably fine. I had to get an industrial stapler. xD

In prior years, Siemens posted semifinalists and regional finalists online in a pdf. No emails. Regional finalists also got a phone call later in the day to arrange mailing materials regarding logistics.

Math project here. USPS overnight for us, ~18$; why does Fedex cost so much more?

Does Intel grade the same way as Siemens? Is there more weight on the complexity of the project or the practicality?

^ I think they are almost the same, both have 300 spots for semifinalist. there might be slight disparities.

Intel asks for recommendations, a transcript, and SAT scores which weigh in on chances for selection. I find this quite odd though…

^ They’re the “science talent search”; they’re looking for good individuals with the maximum potential of future success, not just good research.

Would you guys consider ISEF/STS/Siemens an academic or an extracurricular achievement?

^^ Extracurricular.

Does a project have to be very complex? I’d like to enter, but I think my project is a bit “simple”, that is, it’s not like I worked on it for years. I only started this summer.

Does the experiment have to have some astonishing discovery?

Any suggestions welcome. :)

my project is on neurobiology of learning and memory… i think i have a good chance because no high school student really does a project in better understanding the brain function etc…but still im nervous…just hoping to get to the regionals… :)

Well, it’s an academic extracurricular. Obviously, grades + test scores are strictly academic, while things like sports are strictly extracurricular & not at all related to school. This is in between.

Wow I thought I was like the only one doing express shipping until i came to this thread. my project is molecular genetics/engineering research on figuring out how this bacteria causes frost damage. I really hope I got semi finalist lol… the topics on this thread are scaring me :P

my partner looked at the interaction of two proteins and their involvement in mouse liver cells and human breast cancer cells :D

can someone please answer my question above?

@sunshine02, not necessarily - I’m under the impression that while winning projects are generally of a high caliber, the thought and analysis that goes into it (evidence of your work as a scientist) is more important after a certain point. Time and quality don’t go hand in hand, but I’m sure there’s some correlation since logistically one needs time to gather data and make conclusions; many of the winning projects I saw at ISEF were products of years of research, though I’d spent about a year on mine in comparison.

One week left till results! Anyone anxious?

woooooooooooooo
