***Official 2011 Siemens Competition Thread***

boooooooooo :)

moooooooooooooooooooooo. i’m scared.

So…who’s doing/did ISEF? STS?

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH 5 more days! O.O

sorry. just had to let that out. lol i’m doing STS, did ISEF last year but i swear senioritis is going to screw me over…so probably not this year. helllllaaa fun, though, and easy cash XD

coughs, clears throat

Ah.

I think that was freaking out with more decorum. Good luck, ladies and gentlemen.

Doing ISEF. (Team)

@thecube,

I did ISEF last year too! So incredible; I wish I could do it again this year, but I too am a senior and probably won’t have time for it again.

Finite element of a screw Environment. I developed the environment for which the screw would be placed. (ACL interference screw)
I’m glad someone started this thread! Excited

haha this is wayyy too late, but still, do abstract and executive summary matter? I mean I just bs-ed a summary of my project and changed a few words around for the two… my project was pretty legit though. I hope they don’t pass over me cuz my abstract was bad …

Ivycraze: If I recall correctly the abstract and executive summary are not considered in the first round, only the research report. In the case you make regionals it could bite you in the butt though.

I am just curious. in what region will you be considered/compete against if you are from outside of US (but a us citizen)? the place you are born?

My team’s abstract and summary were pretty bad (I made typed them at like 5am after going 48 hours with like 2 hours of sleep…cramming <3), so that’s pretty relieving.

Submitting it to our local science fair and will hopefully qualify for ISEF.
Anyone know if it would be a problem if we copy pasta a lot of Siemens report for the ISEF affiliated fair report? ISEF says you can use work submitted to other competitions, so I didn’t think it would be, but just wondering what other people are doing- typing a new report from scratch or using a lot from the Siemens report?

^ I’d imagine there are ISEF-specific formatting guidelines. What I’m planning on doing is just reusing the Siemens report but making adjustments as necessary. So yea, what you said sounds fine.

2 days!

Turns out I was wrong, abstract does matter:
[Siemens Foundation - Competition Process](http://www.siemens-foundation.org/en/competition/competition_process.htm)

Sorry!

to be honest, i had around 15 judges at ISEF and none of them had time at all to even notice the paper. same deal with my regional affiliate fair—i mean, you’re standing right there, so it doesn’t make much sense to spend time reading the paper in front of you. you’re not even allowed to distribute copies of the paper, so i’m not actually sure that it means that much…i had a couple copies there anyway, but it’s definitely not a big deal. and there isn’t much of an imposed format, so i’d say your siemens version would be completely fine

personally, the abstract is extremely important because of the sheer volume of contestants and it really sums up your project pretty well

I’m interested in doing a project next year, but I’m a bit worried about the time I’ll need to put together a worthwhile project. As in, it’ll take so much time that my grades might take a hit. If I don’t become a semifinalist (I know it’s tough), can I put “Siemens Competition Applicant” or something similar, to show that I’ve actually been spending my time on something interesting? I’m the first kid at my school to consider doing a Siemens project, so I’m not sure how this works.

Applicant doesn’t say anything. Technically if you just filled out the form, you’re an applicant, and they have no way of verifying, and it could be a terrible project.

A much better way of differentiating yourself is sending in the actual paper as a supplement, or at least an abstract, so they can judge the quality of your research by themselves. (I am doing this regardless of my Siemens results.)

anyone know what time the results come out at on friday?

Come out at 2pm eastern.

And yeah, I put my research as an activity, not like “participated in this competition” or whatever. I had a group of 3 people, and the total man hours we put in were probably like 1300 hrs (400-500 each), we did it over the summer, started in mid June and finished in day before Siemens deadlines. We got invited to a couple places to present the research too. And then some time will add on for the ISEF affiliated fair and if we progress in the contests.

But most schools don’t want your actual report, they want your executive summary or abstract (summaries tend to be layman’s terms so they probably prefer a hybrid of both, so I’ll probably take the liberty of typing a new one… especially since mine sucked…)

thecube & others - My ISEF affiliated fair actually requires and judges a report, abstract, and summary in addition to the presentation and poster, so I guess the process is different from fair to fair.

isk82live, how do you know they come out at 2PM EST? just wondering, I’m a little saddened they do not come out earlier (it’s trifling, but whatever haha)
