My turn, mine’s unique kinda

Applying To: UCLA w/ TAP & TAG-ing to UCSD, UCSB, UCI, and UCSC
Majoring in: Psychology
4th Year CCC Student (2 Years Online SBCC Fall 07-End of Spring 09 3 Years in Person at WVC Fall 08-End of Spring '11)
~99 Units Completed (~118 by Spring 2011) (And I know they won’t take all of them)
IGETC (Completed by Fall 2010, will retake Spanish for other reasons Spring 2011)
GPA: 3.4 WVC, 2.3 SBCC, 2.811 Combined, Estimated ~3.7-3.8 by Spring 2011
------F from SBCC in Stats 100 Fall 08, Fs in Spanish 100 and History 100 Spring 09, and D in Stats (retake 1) in Fall 09 at WVC – I’m taking Stats now and in line to get an A, I was gonna take it Honors in the Spring but the counselor says not to, I’m going to retake the Spanish 100 and History 100 in the Spring and maybe still academically renew through SBCC to get rid of the 3 F’s entirely even if they disappear cause their AR plan is awesome but I can’t until next Spring. I tell this story just to explain why my GPA is gonna jump up an entire level, those being on there just really are dragging it down. This is basically why it’s “unique” cause it looks bad now but a small fix will make it look really good.

Pre-Reqs: Completed by Fall Prior To Transfer (Just Stats and Chem, planning on A’s in both, As and Bs in all other Pre-reqs except for Physiological Psychology, got a C)

Personal Statement: Not yet done but I’d rate it about a 7/10, unique topic (I’m pretty sure very few people are going to do their essays on this topic actually, to the point that I haven’t shared it with anybody but my essay critiquer).

Misc information: Enough units completed to ALSO have an AA in Liberal Arts, (and possibly Philosophy and Film Studies).

Look, guys, here’s the deal:

You can sit here all day long and type out every little facet of your academic careers to date – your classes taken, your GPA, your clubs, awards, a slurry of other accolades, a sob story about your difficult family life and how you intend to incorporate that into a wildly effective personal statement, etc ad nauseam – but the fact of the matter is that none of us here can use that information to help you in the way you’re expecting.

At best, we can say things like “I think that looks good” or “gosh, I don’t know about that” but ultimately, we don’t have the foggiest idea whether you’ll be accepted to some specific major at some specific UC. And guess what? At this point, neither do you and neither does anybody else.

And it gets worse. You’re going to have -months- following the submission of your application prior to hearing anything. You’re going to stress out, wake up and check for updates at 3 in the morning, ask each other over and over and over again if anybody has heard anything or received an email or a phone call or a letter or some sign of life, -some- feedback of any kind from any of the UC’s.

And nobody will have heard anything. Even then, nobody will be able to help you.

Get used to it. If you aren’t a patient person, this is the time to learn.

Instead of relying on wildly differing opinions from complete strangers on College Confidential to make a determination that none of us can possibly make, here are a few tips:

1) If you’re concerned about your GPA, use google to dig up and look at the UC-specific statistics for the previous year. The UC system provides highly verbose admissions stats that you can compare to your own, keeping in mind, of course, that aside from general GPA and course requirements, admissions counselors take a largely holistic approach to evaluating applicants. I was admitted without listing a single award, club membership or academic leadership position, for example. Others who listed large numbers of those things were rejected.

2) If you’re concerned about the courses you’re taking, have yet to take, plan on taking, might be missing, passed, failed, et al, the person you should be seeking advice from is a guidance counselor whom you trust. Seek out and contact admissions personnel from the UC campuses to which you’re applying as well. Be assertive. Some people on these boards know what they’re talking about; others do not. If you want answers to key questions that might have an impact on your future, your best bet is to get them straight from the horse’s mouth.

3) Drop the “I plan to get a…” crap. We all plan to get A’s and B’s, but there’s no sense in asking people to determine your odds when you’ve still got two semesters ahead of you. **** happens – you might get sick, a family member might get laid off or croak or both and so forth. Instead of asking a sea of random strangers online whether they feel you’ll be attending a UC next fall, your time and efforts are better spent simply putting your nose to the grindstone and doing the best you can. Next spring, when the bulk of your classes are complete and you’re on the road toward a strong finish in your final semester, that’s the time to start adding everything up and looking at your odds. Until that time, you’re just going to cause yourself unnecessary stress by asking for wild speculation.

If you have specific questions regarding a course or a program requirement, hey, great: that’s precisely what this place is for. But this “chance me” nonsense isn’t going to do you any good. Do the best you can, throw every little positive thing about yourself on the application, and then do what everybody ultimately has to do every year: be patient and wait.

^ I agree with the above post for the most part. Although it is nice to get an idea of what the November application pool looks like from this thread for playful comparisons.

Here’s the UC statfinder website he mentioned.

[University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/statfinder/default.aspx)

You can build a custom table to find the average applied, admitted and enrolled GPA at UC’s (even by major category).

Applying To: UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, UC Santa Cruz - Computer Science B.A

Current School: CCC

GPA: 4.0

Pre-reqs: UC Berkeley (all done after this fall)

IGETC & TAG will be completed by Fall 2010

EC: Philosophy Club, Alpha Gamma Sigma, independent programming, volunteer in school activities.

Awards: 17th in the nation in AMATYC contest, academic scholarship of Alpha gamma sigma

Major: Business Econ (UCLA), Economics (Cal)

GPA: 4.00 (2 W) TAP certified

Current School: California Community College

Prerequisites: Will be finished by this fall semester.

IGETC: I need two courses in science and one in art, which will be done next semester.

Extracurricular:

 • Managed a selling booth at swap meet
 • participating member of Phi Theta Kappa
 • President’s List 2009 Fall
 • School Honors Program Ambassador

I feel my extracurriculars are little weak and the fact that I have 2 Withdrawals on Calculus 2 and Accounting 101 just bothers me a lot.

I retook Accounting 101 and got an A and I’m currently taking Calc 2, which I am positive that I will get A.

How do I stand for both schools?

P.S. Also, will I have any chance for Haas if I finish all of their breath requirements by next spring smester? I can take one art class, statistic, 2 science course and cultural studies next semester.
I know loading this amount of prerequisites and breath requirements for Haas in the last semester looks bad, so I gave up on applying for Haas.
But I heard as long as I finish them, I 'll have a shot.
Would it be nonsense to apply to Haas instead of Cal Econ in current situation?

Applying to UCSC Psychology 3.2 gpa
a lot of ec’s
first generation college student

@no7129

I think for Haas, your ECs are too weak. They really like leadership for business majors and every single transfer who got in that I have ever met (met a lot on Cal Day) have had at least one leadership role. I wouldn’t apply to Haas if I wasn’t president of at least 1 organization. For example, I’m PTK president of my school’s chapter as well as president of the biz club.

I completely agree with @GTarrant.

Just so everyone knows NO ONE is qualified to chance anybody.

Anyways,@Investment

Haas breaks down their selection criteria as :
50% GPA
35% Essay
15% Resume

I understand leadership positions/extra curricular activities are important but if you look at the breakdown ECs only account for 15%.

http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/images/final/selectioncriteria.gif</a></p>

jslee- yes, not finishing your foreign language requirement IS a problem. You will not be admitted without it.

^to all the schools that are listed?

Well yeah, I know nobody’s qualified, I just see these everywhere and finally decided to go ahead and ask about my chances. I’ve done the calculations playing around with the TAG and just getting all As this semester like I did last time (which isn’t going to be that hard, my hardest class is Chemistry and I’m still picking it up pretty quickly) and getting rid of the bad Spanish 100 grade and History 100 grade will boost my GPA to 3.4… that’s not even replacing those last two, that’s just removing them. Now if I do well in the Spring… and with those 2 classes and 3 honors classes I don’t see how I can’t do well… I’d say it’s fair to figure a .2-.3 GPA boost to 3.6-3.7 at the minimum. I’ll have TAP and all my pre-reqs and IGETC done, pretty much gaurenteed that I’m going to get into UCLA Psych with those kinds of stats based on what I’ve read around here. I just wanted other people’s opinion

Your spring grades don’t count towards your transfer GPA. You have until the end of fall to boost your GPA.

@ Itachirumon: Yeah, with TAP for psych and a 3.5 or so you’ll be good to go. Great work improving the GPA btw! I remember reading your situation last semester.

major: biochem / molecular biology
applying to all UC’s Fall 2011
igetc will be completed by spring of 2011
GPA: 2.86

i kinda messed up, i got like a C in the easiest classes like macro/microecon

i’m better in classes like calc 1 and 2 and the sciences A’s and B’s

what are the estimated chances? hopeful for ucd?

also: i did a lot of tutoring with kids, helped them with math and stuff.

and by fall 2010 im sure my GPA will shoot up to 3.0+

wrong. u have until winter session [semester schedule] to boost your grades.
