Waitlisted:
Rejected: Cal, UCSD (?)

Likely Attending: Cornell

Comments: Get personal. My essays and the interview I had with Cornell are the only things that got me in. Don’t tell them what they want to hear, avoid platitudes like the plague, and show don’t tell. I know those are all somewhat cliche but they worked. Every essay is an opportunity to sell yourself. I even had to write an essay about how I was arrested in high school on campus and I turned it into something that showed how I dealt with the situation and grew. Be confident, and there isn’t anything that can stop you. Best of luck to future transfers reading this.

Current School:UVA

Likely Attending:Cornell

Comments: Thank god, after all the rejections, Cornell came. The reason for this failure? One of my professor screwed me up. I did research for him and asked him for recommendation letter. After the deadline, he told me he didn’t want me to leave and showed me the letter. It was horrible, saying something like “I know little about this guy…”

Accepted: Stanford, UPenn, Brown, Duke, Vanderbilt, WashU, Georgetown
Waitlisted: Yale, Dartmouth, UChicago
Rejected: Harvard, Columbia

Likely Attending: Stanford

Comments:
Georgia Tech is a middling, mediocre school filled with middling, mediocre people. I applied to as many places as possible, just in case. I think I was lucky enough to get into Stanford (one of my first choices) because of my great essays: I had a blast writing them and I was sure to run them by a few people to see if they were actually funny.

Also, I was busy as hell during this entire process, so the quality of my applications was pretty uneven. (At least, that’s what I tell myself so I feel better about being rejected from Columbia. Oh well.)

Current School: Irvine Valley College

Waitlisted: none
Rejected: Bowdoin College, Carleton College, University of Chicago, Washington University in Saint Louis

Likely Attending: Grinnell College?

Comments: My primary interest was in small, selective liberal arts colleges in the midwest. I cast a fairly wide net since LACs have such high retention rates, but did reasonably well with them. I wasn’t really a great student in high school, so I was pleasantly surprised that my high school transcript didn’t hold me back more than anything else.

Although I applied to a few research universities for fun, I think we mutually felt that it would not be a good fit. I’m still waiting on Northwestern, but am not planning on attending if I get in.

This is my D1’s.

Likely Attending: Cornell

Comments: She was waitlisted for regular decision at Cornell and MIT for Fall 2010 and received Cornell decision encouraging her to transfer last June. She got in for Fall 2011. I guess she didn’t pay much attention to her essays last year and she did this time.

Rejected: Wash U, Claremont Mckenna

Likely Attending: Cornell (still waiting on U Penn for financial aid package)

Comments: I know people have been saying ESSAYS, but I honestly don’t think it mattered too much. For some schools I spent months on but for others, barely one day and that wasn’t really reflected in the results.
Anyway, I had some good times this year but I’m definately excited for next year
Good luck to next year’s transfers and don’t hesitate to try!

Recommendations: One is amazing—the best possible recommendation I could have wished for, and the other is very good.

Essays: My essays for why I want to transfer are excellent. My personal essays are less superb— I’m not very good at writing really personal papers. They’re not bad… they’re just not amazing.

Other: Received interviews for Harvard and Swarthmore.

Current School: community college in Nevada (yeah…basically the worst school in the worst state for education haha)
Entering as: sophomore

SAT II Scores: US History: 680, Literature: 710

Waitlisted: none
Rejected: Barnard

Likely Attending: GW, if finances work out (pretty sure they will). So excited to (probably) be a colonial/hippo!!!

Comments: Seriously didn’t think I’d get in anywhere except maybe Susquehanna and McDaniel. So, so, so thrilled that my GED didn’t hold me back like I thought it would. Good luck to everyone who hasn’t heard yet!

Significant ECs: acting, tutoring, political clubs

Applied to: McGill, University of British Columbia, NYU, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Hampshire, Boston University
Accepted: McGill, University of British Columbia, NYU, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Hampshire, Boston University
Waitlisted: Nowhere
Rejected: Nowhere

Likely Attending: NYU

Comments: I wasn’t expecting my transfer applications to go nearly this well. Although NYU was my first choice anyway, I kind of have to wonder if I would have gotten into an even better school had I applied. I chickened out because of my not-so-great high school record.

Current School:County College of Morris
Entering as:Sophomore
High School GPA:N/A- I got my GED but got almost a perfect score if that helps! haha
College GPA:3.9

Comments:I’ve had a very unusual academic/ life history. I never thought I would be able to get into any of these schools and I did!! Never give up on your goals

Current School: None - Gap Year (Received AA from Edmonds Community College)
Entering as: Junior
High School GPA:3.21
College GPA:3.93
SAT/ACT Scores: 28
SAT II Scores:
Significant ECs: Multiple college clubs, paid for school lifeguarding, took a year off to work in PR and pursue fire performing, first graduate of EdCC’s Honors Program.
Hooks: First-generation student
US/Intl:US

Applied to: Brown, Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Loyola University New Orleans, Evergreen, UW-Seattle
Accepted:Loyola, Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Evergreen
Waitlisted: -
Rejected: Brown
Pending: UW (Won’t attend if admitted)

Likely Attending: Loyola University New Orleans

Comments: My ride, personally, has been a roller coaster. Last year, I chickened out of attending UNO and decided to take a year off instead. After visiting New Orleans, I loved the city and especially loved Loyola, which I toured simply because it was right next to Tulane. Tulane was originally my dream school until I toured it; it’s a great school, but it’s not for me.

I could sit here a write a small novel about my transferring experience. However, I’ll just say a gap year is a wonderful idea if you have goals and something concrete to do (I had the fortune of auditioning for a National Reality TV show with my fire troupe, something I would’ve missed out on had I gone on to school). Also, if you have the opportunity to interview for a school, DO IT! I’m certain I got into Smith and MoHo because of my interviews.

Best of luck to everyone this year and beyond!

Current School: The College of New Jersey (transferred from UGA)
Entering as: Sophomore
High School GPA: 3.7
College GPA: 3.2
SAT/ACT Scores: 1950, 1300 verbal/math
SAT II Scores: none submitted
Significant ECs: horseback riding competitively for years, varsity equestrian at UGA, internship, tons of volunteer work, jobs throughout HS
Hooks: Hispanic (not sure if that does anything)
US/Intl: US

Applied to: NYU, William and Mary, Penn
Accepted: none
Waitlisted: NYU
Rejected: William and Mary, Penn

Likely Attending: NYU if I get in, if not I’ll stay at TCNJ and save some money

Comments: NYU is my top choice, so I was happy to at least not be rejected. My college grades aren’t that great but I did take three junior level courses last semester. With W&M and Penn I didn’t put much effort into the applications (I forgot to send a midyear report to W&M) and I knew Penn was a complete long shot but my sister went there so I applied. Also I already transferred once so I explained that decision in my essays but I’m pretty sure it still had a negative effect esp. at W&M since I could have applied there mid year.

Current School: Sierra College
Entering UCLA as: Junior
High School GPA: 3.5 (left two years early - [California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE)](<a href=“California High School Proficiency Examination - Testing (CA Dept of Education)”>http://www.chspe.net/))
College GPA: 4.0
SAT/ACT Scores: N/A - Transfer, never took them.
SAT II Scores: N/A - Transfer, never took them.
Significant ECs: President of Circle K International (community service), Volleyball/Key Club in HS (I listed them as ECs on my app), participation in a number of other clubs. Deans list, took one honors class but wasn’t honors certified. Worked on the school newspaper. Phi theta kappa.
Hooks: 17 year old junior level transfer, awesome essays (sorry to be egotistical, but they were good!)
US/Intl: US

Applied to: UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, Berkley
Accepted: All
Waitlisted: None
Rejected: None

Likely Attending: I’m going to UCLA! :)

Comments: I’m a communication studies major, so UCLA is good for my major (vs. Berkley’s “Media Studies”, which has like no rep and is very theoretical/research driven). A note on transferring from a CC to a UC - I only had the prereqs that my school offered done, which wasn’t all of them (I was missing 3-4). So if you’re in that situation, know that it won’t kill your app.

Current School: NJ Community College
Entering as: Junior
High School GPA: 3.3
College GPA: 3.8 Cumulative (3.65 at first school, 3.9 at CC)
SAT/ACT Scores: 1180 (M/V)/ 1900 (Total)
SAT II Scores: N/A
Significant ECs: Nothing too significant
Hooks: Excellent essays; URM.
US/Intl: US

Applied to: UVA, UNC-CH, Georgetown, Northwestern
Accepted: UVA, UNC-CH
Waitlisted: None
Rejected: Georgetown, Northwestern

Likely Attending: UVA

Current School: California Community College
Entering as: Junior
High School GPA: 3.1
College GPA: 3.62 (UC-transferable)
SAT/ACT Scores: 1530 SAT
SAT II Scores: 300’s I think, only got into Merced
US/Intl: US

Major: English
Applied to: Many UC’s and CSU’s
Accepted: SJSU, SFSU, UCD, UCI, UCSD, UCSC
Waitlisted: N/A
Rejected: UC Berkeley, UCLA

Attending: UC Davis. Their English program is lower ranked than UCI where I was also accepted, but I prefer the area of Davis more. Plus, I wasn’t a fan of the literature programs at UCSD and UCSC - maybe I should’ve done more research, but UCD is solid nonetheless. Ranks about 25/6 in USNWR for English Grad programs.

Comments: I was bummed about getting denied from UC Berkeley and UCLA as I loved their UG programs, but find UC Davis to be a great opportunity for me considering how flexible they are with adding majors/minors, promoting UG research, honors curriculum and a transfer-friendly atmosphere. Plus, it’s only 2 hours from home (Bay Area). I loved my experience at community college and I feel so fortunate to be able to transfer in 2 years! UC Davis class of 2013, go Aggies! :)
