Comments: I apparently didn't get Honors or Gemstone, so I probably won't be considering UMD. I was using it as a backup in case financial aid didn't work out at my (expensive) top choices, but it isn't worth it without those programs. Sorry.

Sorry, I posted twice for some reason.

DS received email acceptance over the weekend. Also waiting to see if scholarship is attached.

Mouzla...our DS had the exact same stats, except his ACT was 33, 5 APs (I think) and 15 college credits from Jump Start, he did not have leadership positions. He was OOS. You might fit into their parameters for honors, but most honors are way above them, typically also accepted to Ivies like Duke, UPenn, etc. You will see everybody in scholars will be in your parameters.

He absolutely loves the program. Even though they accepted you for govt and politics they will still send a form to ask you to rank your choices. The programs are small...i.e. govt & politics is about 75 students.

Go TERPS BEAT HOKIES

bulletandpima: thanks for all the info

my brother got into honors at UMD and he loves the program. He had a 29 ACT score and he had very few ecs/leadership. i got 34E,33R,30M,29S on the ACT and i had a decent amount of ecs/leadership and I am a minority from a very diverse background so I was hoping I would be accepted into honors. Is there any way I could possibly take honors courses as a scholars student? I would really enjoy taking honors courses with 20 or less kids because I love class discussion (especially in GVPT)

I heard that since economic times are rough, many students will probably take a full ride at UMD or a public state school over paying 35k+ at an ivy. That might be the reason that public state schools are going to be very competitive this year.

DS accepted to Chemical & Life Sciences & Honors

Mouzia, DS's classes for govt and politics are very small, the largest he had for his core courses were @ 30 kids and taught by the prof. Only was econ taught by the TA, and was 250+.

He had many classes that were discussion based. I recall him talking about his political classes debating McCain/Obama policy programs. Most of his govt courses were not rote, but theoretically based. Tests were essay supporting your stance, not multiple choice.
His book list was very cheap (@300), b/c most were history realated...Black Hawk Down and Band of Brothers come to mind, not the typical big 30 lb history book. Only his econ and math were the expensive one. One classes right now is 9 novels that they need to read (this is a military history course)

Also remember you will probably validate many freshmand and some soph courses if you took APs or jumpstart which will get you out of the typical large class.

Accepted! with Honors/CP Scholars

4.3 GPA, 2220 SATs
varsity sports, various clubs, leadership, etc

i love UMD and the Terps. but i probably won't be going unless i get a hefty scholarship or merit aid. and considering that my brother got in last year with better stats and the aid was still not what we expected, the future is kind of iffy for me there also.

UMD IMHO is not very generous in the merit area...lowest for all of DS's acceptances.

has anyone not heard back yet?

take out the spaces inside the brackets.
