Official ACT October 26 Discussion THREAD

@ e1020n -yeah, you had to set the equation equal to zero (0= height at ground level) and then solve for time.
the answer was 5.

sqrt(-400/-16) if I remember correctly.

@e10n20n

Just set the equation equal to 0…that was like the easiest problem on the test.

The answer was 5.

I think I got 5 seconds (which was A I believe) for the falling penny question.

I believe I had 73A, but I’m not exactly sure. I thought the English and reading were pretty easy. Thhe science was okay, but the math was ridiculously hard.

Bubinski, all of the questions were easy. I just out-arroganced you.

Thanks! I thought the other ones were fairly easy but I guess I didn’t read it well enough.

I’ve taken tens of hours worth of practice tests and I usually get 30+ on them.
I found this exam a bit different from the practice ACTs I’ve taken.

The English section included questions where you insert sentences into different parts ([A]**[C][D]) of different paragraphs ([1][2][3][4]), and two vocabulary curve-balls: hurtle & hurdle; remittance - respite; he quipped, in retrospect ironically, "…; etc.

The Math section (usually my strongest), I didn’t even finish. I guessed on about five of them: value of y so that the rhombus becomes a square; midterm score and tests 11 and 12; etc.

The Reading section (usually varies -sometimes 30+, other times not), I found pretty fair. I found the first passage difficult to comprehend - it had tricky language & required careful thinking of what was stated. One of the passages resembled a fighting-scientist, science passage.

The Science section (varies - sometimes 30+, other times not), I think was one of the simplest science sections I’ve taken. Questions were straight forward - required only a small amount of scientific knowledge.

Writing Section Prompt: Parents disagree over whether social media networks are positive or negative influences on the younger people of today. Some parents say that they help students develop communication skills that are necessary in order to succeed in today’s technological world. Other parents believe that these sites take time away from students from doing more important thing such as focusing on school or spending time with their families. In your essay, be sure to choose a side (multiple sides, or present a new side) and present examples to back up your opinion.

Argument: Students spend too much time on media sites. Not enough time is being spent on school + family. Report card grades are going down. Students are not being well prepared for college and life.

Counter Argument: Only some students use media sites to their advantage. Other students abuse the system. Some students use it to cheat, plagiarize, etc… Media sites are also means for cyber bullying.

@Richard

On the midterm question, one of the tests was higher than the class average by 8 and the other was lower by 4.

8 + (-4) = 4
4 / 12 (which is the # of tests taken) = 1/3

darn…

10char

Damn. I misread the midterm question and thought it was 8 higher and 4 higher.

@Riadon… good lord, was it really that easy? Here was my process:

25 students x 10 tests = 250 tests.

I just started playing with numbers from here. I decided to say that the test was out of 100 points and everyone got 100 on the test (thus the average was 100, derp). 250 x 100 = 25000 points earned.

It said the next test had an average of 8 points higher. Well, going with the same logic, everyone scored 108 points, then. This means that 25 more tests were taken, too. If everyone scored 108 on it, that’d be an additional 2700 points earned (25 x 108).

Next, it said the average was 4 points lower. Hmm. Again, keeping the same logic with 100 as the base, the average for this one would have to be 96 out of 100. If everyone scored 96 on it, that’d be an additional 2400 points earned (25 x 96).

…and then I compiled everything. 250 tests + 25 more + 25 more. 300 tests total. 25,000 points + 2,700 points + 2,400 points = 30,100 points earned. Now take the average.

30,100 points divided by 300 tests = average score of 100.33 (1/3 higher than the initial average).

LOL. Waste of time. Still got it though. Whew.

Definition of hurdle (n)

Bing Dictionary

hur·dle

[ húrd’l ]

1.difficulty or obstacle: a difficulty or obstacle that has to be overcome
2.barrier for runner to jump over: one of a number of light barriers over which runners have to jump in some track-and-field events

yay does this mean the answer was for sure “hurtled” not hurdled

@Riadon
I believe the question said something about twenty five students each taking ten exams.
The average of those ten exams was called the Midterm Average.
Then the students took two more exams: exam 11 and exam 12.
The average of exam 11 was 8 points higher (don’t remem. the pts. exactly - will take your word for it) than the Midterm Average. The average of exam 12 was 4 points lower (don’t remem. the pts. exactly - will take your word for it) than the Midterm Average.

I believe the question asked how many points above or below the Midterm Average were all 12 tests combined.

It was definitely hurtle . Hurtle- move at a great speed, typically in wildly uncontrolled manner.

The answer to the midterm was 1/3 – 100% sure
The answer was hurtled – 100% sure because it means move at a great speed
value to make a square, r = 1, 100% sure

I basically did bad on the reading and science so I don’t want to disclose my answers on those since they are not prob. gonna help.

I was lazy and graphed the penny falling one. 5 seconds for sure.

Didn’t even have to change the graph window, lol.

English: Fairly easy, looking back I probably missed 1 or 2 of those vocabulary questions

Math: 1-40 were easy, 40-50 weren’t bad, 50-60 I was cursing under my breath… that rhombus question threw me

Reading: Not bad, the twin passage was hard to understand at first

Science: Easy, some questions required reading a little more into it

the fluidity of blood is lower because blood is more viscous right??

for English form 73A:
approx how many “A: NO CHANGE” answers did you put down

I feel like I put down more than I usually do. idk
