haha that's interesting about your parents/grandparents not wanting you to take German because of the history....it's the same with my family and Russian since I live in a country that was invaded by the Russians mere decades ago. I actually take German and I've read some Goethe in German.

Germanophobia is stupid. I also come from a Jewish family but I've long since gotten over the fact that to forgo the rich German literary tradition because of the actions of the few is just nonsensical. You may as well say that English and Spanish are not worth learning because of their actions in the Americas in the 15th and 16th centuries.

DanielCarp, I've never read Human, All Too Human, so I can't say much about it. Of the Nietzsche that I've read I would say that On The Genealogy of Morality is a good place to start. Nietzsche is very...idiosyncratic. It's sometimes rather difficult to decipher him.

Piratemonkey, what Goethe have you read? I've only read The Sorrows of Young Werther, but I loved it. I plan on reading Faust as soon as I have the time - I have a bilingual edition so hopefully I'll learn some more German in the process =)

Oh, and yes, it's totally normal to learn a new language while at a LAC.

I've read Marquez, Allende, bits of Don Quijote, and many others in Spanish. So many juniors at my school (including myself) took the AP Spanish Literature course last year that they had to make a new lit course for us =p This year we've read two plays by Lorca and a lot of short stories by Borges.

I really wish I could have taken German, though. French too.

I think Germanaphobia is stupid too...that's why I have no qualms about taking it. This logic doesn't always fly with survivors, though.

Oooooohhh I love Lorca!!! The House of Bernarda Alba! So intense! Yeah Faust is one of those 'must read' books and I've also read Stella and then his poem der Zauberlehrling.

I just have to say that I think Nietzsche's Ubermensch theory is the coolest thing ever!!! I totally annoy my teachers by applying it excessively. I think Raskolnikov (Crime and Punishment) is a pretty valid example of someone believing that they are an Ubermensch (at least for part of the book), and I definitely think that Napoleon believed he was an Ubermensch...but was he actually one?

Besides Camus and Sartre, I've especially read Dostoevsky and Tolstoy.
Crime and Punishment was actually the first "serious" book I read. It is probably the book the has influenced me the most, because it helped me discover the pleasure of reading.

About Spanish: Personally, I don't like much Don Quijote. I get it's importance and it's value, but it's not my favorite.
If you're going to read something in Spanish, go for Cien A

Yay, Spanish literature! :) I have not read Cien A

Yup, read all of those, Phedre. You haven't taken the AP Lit, have you? =p That's basically the curriculum right there.

Yeah, Neruda is amazing. I recently got a bilingual edition of his poetry with the English on one side and the Spanish on the other. Love it.

Anyone here read Foucault?

No, but I know that I should. What would you recommend to start with?

The hardest and best, Madness and Civilization.

Ooh, this looks goooood =) I'm excited. I also want to read his History of Sexuality books.

Oh, I have, very interesting!

That's what I thought. I began to read some in Barnes & Noble but then I decided I would save it for later. I guess I'll have to reconsider now.

I like Madness and Civ more, personally.

Crime and Punishment is alright but you should read some Chekhov!!! Good stuff :D I really liked Tolstoy's Anna Karenina too!

I've read Chekhov too, great stuff. Same year as reading Frankenstein.

Has anybody ever read Bram Stoker's Dracula?

I'm going to Wellesley next year. I dont know why i'm posting that, i'm just random

Devorzhum, yup I do take the class. Otherwise I don't think I would be motivated to read those works on my own. I'm so glad I'm doing it though.

I am too. Are you going to continue with Spanish in college or perhaps learn a different language?
