Official AP Calculus AB 2011 Thread

I don’t understand why everybody had trouble with #5. I think that maybe people were confused by the way the problem was presented, or that they over-thought it, because the math involved was not particularly difficult…

Here is what we are allowed to discuss:

"EXAMPLES OF ALLOWABLE CONTENT

 1. A general discussion of topics on the exam.
 2. Comments on how well the course covered those topics.
 3. Comments related to preparation.
 4. Comments on how well the student thinks s/he did.
 5. Comments on the difficulty of the exam."

"UNALLOWABLE CONTENT

 1. The articulation of multiple-choice exam questions and answers.
 2. The articulation of free-response questions* within 2 days of the exam in which they appear."

Just like the general consensus, I thougt this test to be alot more difficult in overall compared to the past exams I have done.

Section 1 MC |Non-Calculator:

Okay this was alright but I found it to be a wee bit more difficult compared to Section 1 MC Calculator. The problem I had here was time related. The problems all required thinking and I had to guess on like 8 problems. There was just not enough time to do this section.

Section 1 MC |Calculator:

This was alot easier than the first section and I pretty much breezed through this. Guessed on like 3 questions? Hopefully I didn’t make any careless mistakes on the others.

Section 2 FRQ, Calculator:

I answered the first question completely, because I remember doing a similar problem just a day before the test. The next question was also pretty easy, but I sort of fudged up on the last part. Overall I think I scored around (hopefully) ~16 points of of the 18 points.

Section 2 FRQ, Non-Calculator:

The fourth question was alright but I don’t think I answered half of it. At this point I was getting rather nervous. Ok so I just skip the two parts and move on to question 5, praying that it would be easier. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I just like ~80% of the poeple on this thread as well as everyone I talked to after the test thought this question was ridiculously difficult. I remember answering the last part on question 5 (hopefully it was right) but the first two my mind drew a complete blank. I spend a few minutes looking at question 5 I just skipped it.

Again my hopes for an easy quesiton 6 was crushed again. This question was almost as challenging as question 5. So for the entire time I just wrote random BS for these two questions.

This section was the most brutal out of the entire test. Everyone, I talked to after the test, saw this section as the most difficult. The questions were nothing like past exams. I am not kidding, I got raped on this section.

Also [AP Calculus AB Score Calculator - May 2011 Test Scoring Changes](http://www.free-test-online.com/ap/ap_calculus_score.html) is this AP Calc AB Calculator accurate? It says its for the 2011. The calculator says I would get a 4. But I honestly think I got a 2~3…

I have never felt so utterly defeated by a test in all of my life.

The MC- easy.
The FRQ- by the end, I was hysterically laughing at the ridiculousness of the whole thing.

Were we required to circle our answers? cause i did for some questions and didn’t for others. (FR, that is)

^ As long as they can follow your work, I don’t think so.

on the FR, i forgot to put dx at the end of every integrals…:frowning:
do you guys think i won’t get any credits for the equations because of that?

I felt rushed on the non-calculator mc (random bubbling for 3 or 4) and I thought the frqs were moderate, but I probably did something [or many things] wrong. FRQ #6 o_O - I hope I at least got a one on it.

@Bioboy if you’re pm’ing secrets, i wanna knowwww :D

Considering alot of people did bad on the FRQ, I predict the national average would be lower. Thus there will be different score margins.

I think that this was an experimental year for the AP. With the new scoring and crazy problems.

Haha for some reason, people think it’s like cheating or something. Guys it’s not a pattern or anything. I was just really fortunate and got extremely lucky. I’ll let you know after the 48 hours, so just chillax :)

bioboy: what are you talking about?

the test bent me over and did me good. expecting a 3, praying for a 4.

my thoughts on the test:

MC: The non-calc part screwed me up big time. My strategy/pace didnt work at all as I skipped bunch of questions I should have spent more time on. I end up rushing on couple of questions. The calc part felt much easier and I performed on my level. Overall, pretty bad lol. probably 23-27/45.

FR: I was extremely prepared for this portion since my teacher made us do around 40 FR questions for the past month (not so good job on MC =.=). Number 1 and 2 are ridiculously easy to me. Probably 8-9 points each. Number 3 and 4 are reasonable from my experience; I did pretty well on them. Probably 6-7 points each. Like everyone else, I had trouble with 5 and only genuinely answered part B. Hoping for 2-3 mercy points. I dont remember number 6 lol. If I had major problems on it I would have remembered. So I would give myself 4-5 points.

I really hope I got a 5 on this test because my college does not accept anything lower. Hopefully the curve is very generous.

am i the only one who had NO idea what was going on throughout the entire test? I wrote S.O.S. on some of the FRQ -_-

wow it looks like im completely opposite from most of you guys. i thought the mc was hard but the frq’s were pretty easy. number 5 was kinda tough but i think i may have scrambled 4-5 points out of it. so umm…lets say i got 25 on the mc and 40 on the frq’s, around what score should i expect?

^Thats a 5 according to someones link.

Wow… That test killed me. I seem to be with the majority here. No calc mc’s were much harder than those with. The frqs…theres nothing to be said. Unbelieveably difficult. 1 and 2 moderately difficult, 3-6… 8^(

jyng822,

THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting that score calculator. I felt so bad after taking it, but now I think I got within the 3-5 range. One can hope…

In comparison to the practice tests i’ve been taking (Princeton Review + Barron’s), this test was actually pretty rough.

Section I Part A - straightforward. Still, I had to be alert and tenacious (especially since I am NOT a morning person) to make sure i didnt blindly skip any questions or fill in the wrong bubble. All were do-able, nothing complex ie. Simpson’s Rule.

Section I part B - easiest calc section i’ve ever, ever taken. I was prepping like mad for the calc section’s since i got the feeling that since you were allowed to use a calculator, CollegeBoard expected you to do super advanced stuff. ANYWAY, this calc section was more about using your calculator correctly than about calculus.

Section II Part A (Calculator) - THUNK! Completely missed #1, maybe i wriggled a few points out of 1a and 1b, but 1c was impossible and 1d was difficult.

2 was also pretty challenging, but as long as one’s careful, this question shouldn’t be a problem.

All in all, I was NOT ready for this section. Scared the jeebers out of me, but i figured that it was hard for everybody (am I correct?)

Section II Part B (No calculator) - pretty straightforward. Personally, I felt that there were too many computations and that the focus of the section was shifted away from calculus and problem solving.

All in all, i think I scored well, probably a 5, at least thats what the AB Score calculator says.

@richardliu7896:
Wrong thread buddy :)

I’ve never heard of Simpson’s rule in AB and there was no part d to number 1. I think you should be in the BC thread! ;)
