Official AP Chemistry Thread (2014-2015)

I’m the opposite, mc is my struggle, since my teacher sucks at teaching, I don’t understand concepts but I do well with math

For help with MC, go through the AP Chemistry course description. I found that many questions on the practice test were based off the learning objectives (they were almost identical, actually). For example:

Essential knowledge 1.D.3.b: Different types of molecular motion lead to absorption or emission of photons in different spectral regions. Infrared radiation is associated with transitions in molecular vibrations and so can be used to detect the presence of different types of bonds. Ultraviolet/visible radiation is associated with transitions in electronic energy levels and so can be used to probe electronic structure.

There was a question that literally stated this EK as a question. Here’s another example:

EK 1.E.2.e: In gravimetric analysis, a substance is added to a solution that reacts specifically with a dissolved analyte (the chemical species that is the target of the analysis) to form a solid. The mass of solid formed can be used to infer the concentration of the analyte in the initial sample.

Go look at the first free response question from the 2014 exam. Coincidence?

what exactly do we need to know for the VSEPR? Like do we need to memorize this chart: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oM4LZRPuhzY/TuFZiMxSVdI/AAAAAAAAABk/eazapGYfZxk/s640/vsepr.png

like do we need to know that 4 lone electrons and 2 electron pairs is T-Shaped with Sp3D hybridization and bond angles of 180 and 90 degrees?

This exam is HARD- like, you come out of the room with eyes glazed over and barely able to move your shaking body two feet forward without hitting a wall hard.

That being said, it must be that a lot of people feel likewise because you DO NOT have to do that well to get a five. I only answered 2/3 of the free response, and not everything I actually answered was necessarily right, yet I still got a five in the end.

If you put the time in, success is definitely possible. Time yourself on a ton of practice exams these next few weeks, and if you’ve worked all year, you should be fine.

question: if i’m not taking an ap chem course (my school doesn’t offer any ap classes…highest is honors ) , does it matter if i don’t do well on this? like will colleges care that i don’t have any ap classes or score?

Does anyone know where/how I can review the labs?

@sonpat d orbitals have been omitted from the AP Chemistry course (as per the course description). Here are the bond angles that are also included in the course description:
sp - 180°
sp2 - 120°
sp3 - 109°

I scored a 26/50 on the MC Practice test my teacher gave me? Do I even have a chance at passing?

That would be a 3 ^

@apactstudent I think I’m going to do that, looking over the course description… should we memorize labs?

to be honest i don’t think the frq’s are super duper hard, but i feel that the way the questions are worded is what is difficult and the time restraints

@zeppelins where can I find info about labs?

@APScholar 5 steps to a 5 surprisingly has a solid 15-20 labs in the back of the book but i was told to mainly focus on titrations…

@APScholar also the barron’s book has SOME info about apparatus but its limited. i can give you the names of the labs if you want

Experiments:
Finding the Formula of a Compound
The Percentage of Water in a Hydrate
Molar Mass by Vapor Density
Molar Mass by Freezing-Point Depression (probably NOT tested)
Molar Volume of a Gas
Standardization of a Solution
Acid-Base Titration
Oxidation-Reduction Titration
Finding the Equilibrium Constant
pH Measurements and Indicators for Acid-Base Titrations
The Rate and Order of a Reaction
Enthalpy Changes
Qualitative Analysis of Cations and Anions
Synthesis and Analysis of a Coordination Compound
Gravimetric Analysis
Colorimetric Analysis
Chromatographic Separation
Properties of Buffer Solutions
An Electrochemical Series
Electrochemical Cells and Electroplating
Synthesis and Properties of an Organic Compound

also , what percent right is a 5?

@zepplins yeah thats a lot I think it would be foolish to memorize all.

how many do you need right for a 5?

lol sorry just realized i asked the same question twice!

Hey will I be ready if I go over the Barrons book completely? and should I buy Princeton Review for Chem?
