The foreign culture minister (2nd) was talking to the la times, so for the sake of political sensitivity he couldn’t say what he really thought as it would be published for the world to see.
The other foreign culture minister (1st) was working for a government that was expressing anti american sentiment at the time (ban on coca cola by france) so he had to represent the interests of his govt rather than his own views.
what do you guys think?
@guanlinzhou I’m not sure… They are generous with POV I think so hopefully I get either 3 or 5 as well and get that bonus point. But just to clarify on one of your prior posts where you said the society academie guy would want the language to stick around. I grouped that under a group where it was okay for some changes to occur to the culture, because he used the words “le weekend”, and also said that language should not be ruled by decree and some things should be allowed to come into it. Would you agree with that? If not, that would be my one major misinterpretation and not affect me really.
@Waldoizhere Those look very good. But I also said that the mayor was likely just saying that because he didn’t want any of those anarchists or revolutionaries causing trouble in his city, which explains his viewpoint.
Would you say that the magazine suggested that immigration could be seen as bad simply because it tried to compare it to an invasion? I felt like it was included in this document set for that reason.
Oh yeah and I was reading the previous messages on this thread and you guys need to chill. Its just a test. Cant believe some of you people have been worried about this since january and march and have been anxiously counting down the months to the exam. You guys all need to get a life. Seriously.

I got that he wanted to preserve language by using culture (film books etc) but I also knew that the french word for weekend is Le week-end and for parking is Le parking (thank you two years of hs french) so I didn’t put that he thought that some change was good.
I thought that he was just rebuking the other guy for thinking that government intervention was required to maintain the french language
I actually started in April not March or January but I will concede that I was counting down the days until the test.
What I thought the guy meant was that using the law to maintain language would do nothing, and suggested that making good books, film, etc. was the only way to prevent the loss of language
Right he wanted to preserve language but he said language should should be allowed to change on its own and not be ruled by decree. To me, that is saying that some changes should be allowed to occur. He wasn’t a fan of the toubon laws, and by saying “le weekend” and “le parking” it seemed to insinuate that they used things like we do in English
Therefore, by rebuking the law he seemed to be criticizing not allowing the language to develop on its own and change a little.
Regarding POV… I felt like that wasn’t that hard. What I found challenging was the grouping… So few had “common denominators”, Btw how much did you guys write for the first essay?

Like 3.5 pages for the dbq. I personally thought that the dictionary guy thought that the language would keep developing even with laws, and that to help it develop one should make films, books etc. i thought he said you cant preserve only culture, only accept its change and help it on its way.

@zenith99 It definitely would be valid I think. The document had to be included for a reason, and the only way to use it would be to say that it suggested that a lot of Frenchmen felt like they were being invaded. However, if you said that the magazine held that opinion, that might not be valid.
@Waldoizhere I interpreted it the same way, and felt as though he was saying that although you want the language to stick around, it needs to develop and change a little bit.
@CGlynn I didn’t want to risk the invasion thing so I just said it was representation of the mixed and confused opinions of the 1990s
