Official Barnard 2012 Transfer Thread

Finding an apartment isn’t that big of a deal (honestly, it’ll probably be nicer than the dorms in Elliott), but I don’t know how I’m going to pay for it. Barnard reduced my grant by half

Yeah, same here… 'twas quite the blow. Still, FinAid promises to reinstate the grant when housing’s assigned. Here’s to hoping that’ll be sooner, rather than later.

I talked with a few people at Barnard. Housing isn’t guaranteed for Spring 2013, and about 90 people are without housing–however, around 50 students graduate in October and at least 100 study abroad during the spring semester, so that sounds pretty promising

I don’t mind living off campus per se. The problem is that I can’t physically see anything as I live in california so that’s unsettling. Plus furnishing adds up. Just ups my anxiety for the coming year.

I’m thinking of just renting a room from a tenant. I don’t feel like dealing with furniture, and there’s always the chance that I could transfer to a dorm at some point in the semester (it’s a pretty small chance, but if I commit to an unfurnished apartment and a dorm becomes available, I’ll be stuck with a bunch of furniture I don’t need)

I haven’t been able to find any available rooms! apartment it is for me! Some nice 3 bedrooms for 2400 (800 each) super close to campus

That sounds solid. The apartment’s unfurnished, though, yeah?

I’ve found an okay room on 125th street (almost everything else I’ve tried is either booked or unfurnished), but that three-bedroom apartment also sounds good. How close to campus is the apartment?

It is unfurnished…around 116 and 8th, so super close

I might be flying to New York next week to check out the room/apartment I mentioned (emphasis on the word “might”). If it’s all right with you I might be able to look at the apartment you’re considering

@justina11 the girl i was going to room with (not sure if we have a third) went and looked at it today and sent me pictures. That is very sweet of you to offer though! We may need a third person, but I will let you all know. The building has a lot of Columbia students living in it. The apartment itself is being completely renovated as we speak!

Welp, I’m in a bit of a bind - my parents are dead-set against me renting a room from locals. If either of you finds yourself looking for a roomate, think you can let me know? It might mean the difference between a three-hour commute and living on campus (or close to it, anyway).

No problem. Thanks, Lilli!

whyamisoclever, did you mention that a lot of these locals are Columbia students?

Yeah. Long story, but it’s unlikely they’ll budge. Anyway, making the rounds at Barnard/Columbia now… hoping things work out. If you guys need anything, just say the word.

I hope things work out for you whyamisoclever. Keep us posted!

Good luck everyone ! Hopefully we can do a get together during orientation week at someone’s apartment !

Guys, check your gbear email. I just got guaranteed housing

So did I. Huh. But I don’t want to be stuck in some triple

They’re also turning singles into doubles. It’s not an ideal living situation, but wouldn’t you rather live on campus and at a reduced cost?

Well the singles in Elliott are notoriously tiny. Not sure I’d want to share an already tiny space
