Essays (rating 1-10, details):
CommonApp(9)- Wrote about the Great Firewall of China and how my small actions make a difference on the mentalities of Chinese prejudice. Hopefully it’ll fall one day. I thought it was pretty creative.

Supplements:
Why Brown?(6) - talked about research and the activist community and Bruno the bear. (yeah not the best)

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Didn’t read any of these so it’s a guess.

Teacher Rec #1: Biology (8): known for her great rec letters. Had her class for 2 years.
Teacher Rec #2: History(8): awesome teacher who’s super down to earth - he really likes me. Had his class for 2 years.
Counselor Rec(6): I submitted a questionnaire that answered a bunch of questions for the counselor to write off of. Didn’t read it, plus we met only a couple of times but I’m sure it was adequate.
Additional Rec: none
Interview: lasted ~45 minutes, although I feel like I connected to the interviewer on a superficial level (it was on the phone). We talked about Brown life and such. Didn’t really click but overall not bad. (Not good either)

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Biology
State (if domestic applicant): FL
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public school; a bit rural if anything
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: F
Income Bracket: <$100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): ???

Reflection:

Strengths: Hard stats were not bad I guess. It’s probably what got me not rejected.
Weaknesses: Perhaps the supplement essays. LOL I looked back at one and realized there a typo. I did a lot of research on Brown but I don’t think I adequately conveyed it in my writing.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: No major awards and possibly my race. Having those objective stats is extremely common among east Asians, so I’m sure the school barely glanced at my app. I also think these things are a crapshoot and I just got an unlucky draw.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: accepted to OSU, my back-up’s back-up.

General Comments:
Do I really want to get into college? Instead of finishing the rest of my college apps (after Brown’s nice early-Christmas gift of a deferral) I’m scouring College Confidential. Maybe I should just take a gap year.

In all seriousness, my hard stats are pretty good but I think it came down to how I looked overall. On paper I seem like an all-around student instead of a spiked one, but that’s pretty much because I find so many things interesting. Ah well, congrats to all that got in and hopefully I have the motivation to type out 10 more essays!

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): we definitely signed a form that said we wouldn’t have access to our recs so IDK how y’all are rating these but both of mine were by teachers with their doctorates (one english, one science) and I was super close to both of them and did really well in their class (i often led class discussions)

Teacher Rec #1: we definitely signed a form that said we wouldn’t have access to our recs so IDK how y’all are rating these but both of mine were by teachers with doctorates (one english, one science) and I was super close to both of them and did really well in their class (i often led class discussions)
Teacher Rec #2: ^^^^^^
Counselor Rec: Hopefully good!! I have a rly good connection with my current college counselor, but he has only been around since august…the original college counselor quit at the end of last year and threw everyone into a mess.
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: good interview!! my guy was a little spazzy and kept asking me about my school’s brother school for some reason and kept telling me how he got to brown and realized he was actually a conservative (idk how that’s even possible) but I’m a little afraid that he might’ve written me out as a conservative bc I didn’t make a big point in stressing my political beliefs (I didn’t want to get into a fight with this man)
[aB]Other:**

Applied for Financial Aid?: n/a
Intended Concentration: Physics, Art
State (if domestic applicant): Texas (this might’ve hurt me)
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Well Known Single-Sex Private
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: >100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): n/a

Reflection:

Strengths: my essays and my extra curriculars were definitely my strengths. My transcript shows me taking some of the most rigorous classes my school offers and it also shows a clear story of my fascination in science and art. Apparently all of this wasn’t enough to outweigh the next item of concern…
Weaknesses: my gpa. I know, but I was hopeful that everything else on my application and the known rigor of my school would help.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: my gpa. that’s literally all it comes down to. I work really hard in school and I know I’m really smart but I’ve had to fight it out with ADD and a body that builds tolerance to medication really quickly throughout high school so it’s rly had a strain on my grades and there was no way for me to explain that to Brown because my college counselor didn’t want to risk them reading that I had ADD and automatically assuming I wouldn’t be able to keep up because I know it’s not true.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nowhere yet. I’m doing ED II to Vassar.

General Comments:

Brown was my dream college…the RISD|Brown dual degree program was my pipe dream…so yeah, I’m not happy I was denied. I know I would’ve thrived at Brown and I know I’m going places in life, so Brown will just have to read my research papers later. I wish there was some way for colleges to watch us at every moment throughout high school because if that was the case I think I would’ve been accepted…or at least deferred.

Decision: Accepted - ED

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown):
ACT (breakdown): 33 (M: 35 E: 35 R: 33 S: 30, Writing: 28)

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Regional Math Fair Gold Medal (Grade 10), Silver Medal (Grade 9), Regional Science Congress Honorable Mention, Regional Environmental Science Award, World Language Academic Honor, Varsity Scholar Athlete

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): National Honor Society (Vice President), Varsity Cheerleading (Captain), Debate Club & Model United Nations
Job/Work Experience: Pharmacy Technician (Since Grade 10)
Volunteer/Community service: Church Youth Group, Special Olympics Coach, Tutor, Midnight Run, Students for 60,000
Summer Activities: National Grid Engineering Pipeline Program, Vacation Bible School Volunteer Counselor, Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Camp Counselor
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Not sure how I’d rate myself but my dad said at least a 9 lol… My Common App Essay was about the seemingly contrasting passions I have for engineering and cheerleading yet how they work cohesively to form my identity (I chose the identity prompt). Also included how I’ve experienced stereotyping yet overcome them.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): No idea because I couldn’t read them but I guess they did the job!

Teacher Rec #1: Theory of Knowledge Teacher… Only had him for half of junior year but we formed a strong connection. The class is for IB Diploma students and is based mainly on in class discussion with some presentations and writing. I believe my performance on our major presentation helped me and it was the main reason I chose him to write my recommendation.
Teacher Rec #2: IB Physics Teacher… Formed a solid connection and served as a strong leader in class and during labs.
Counselor Rec: Once again couldn’t read it but I believe it was good. For anyone who is a junior or younger, form a strong relationship with your counselor and be very on top of your college application process because it will help for this recommendation.
Additional Rec:
Interview: Very good… Made a strong connection with the woman who happened to work at the same engineering company where I did my summer program which served as a nice conversation starter. Made sure to do much research and show that I know a lot about the school while also showing what I will offer the school.

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: Pretty sure Brown is need blind in the application process so this won’t play a factor when they are considering you
Intended Major: Engineering (Biomedical Engineering)
State (if domestic applicant): New York (Long Island)
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large Public School
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: >$100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy

Reflection:

Strengths: Essays, Female going into Engineering, IB Diploma, Legacy (Pretty sure this will only be a factor if your stats closely align with a very similar applicant, definitely doesn’t make it a given but probably helped a bit, who knows)
Weaknesses: Test Scores (SAT II Math Level II didn’t cut it), living in New York (on Long Island especially)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Female in engineering, strong common app essay and supplements, good interview and GPA, IB Diploma
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Binghamton, didn’t apply anywhere else because I was procrastinating and hadn’t written supplements yet

General Comments: I’m so lucky to have gotten in because Brown has always been my dream school. Don’t let the college process get you down too much because the school you go to doesn’t determine your worth (Getting into Brown doesn’t make you super-human, being denied doesn’t make you any less smart or qualified). College applications is so competitive but everyone will end up where they belong.

I hope this is helpful! Good luck to seniors in your college search, congratulations to those accepted and good luck to underclassmen just beginning the college process. Enjoy it! Don’t spend too many hours on college confidential because it will stress you out!!!

Job/Work Experience: Worked in School admissions Offices
Volunteer/Community service: minimal, nothing large enough to put on my application
Summer Activities: Yale program on politics
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App was probably an 8 or 9 (on being out of my element in Japan and in general), Why Brown was a 9 in my opinion, others all at least 8’s in my eyes??? This I think essays were one of the selling points of my application
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I think it was probably around an 8 in general

Teacher Rec #1: History - felt really good about this one, we had a really great relationship!
Teacher Rec #2: Math - pretty good but not outstanding, I’m not the best STEM student out there
Counselor Rec: I felt good because they base it off of teacher comments, which generally are good even for classes I struggle in

Reflection:

Strengths: Activities for sure, and I think my essays as well. Some might also say my race? meh
Weaknesses: grades, lack of SAT II’s
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I’m a very interesting candidate with very diverse and unique high school experiences. I do know that my grades weren’t the best selling point; they weren’t bad but they definitely didn’t help.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: UMich

General Comments: I’m so pleasantly surprised by the outcome. Some reading my stats might wonder how I got in, but I think with Brown’s holistic admissions process, it makes more sense than what meets the eye  To everyone, congrats just for making it this far, high school isn’t easy and I know that anyone who could even have the stats to even consider applying to Brown will go amazing places. <3

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I just turned 16. I applied to Brown ED last year as 15 yo junior, was deferred ED, rejected RD. Wrote an extra essay this year about my growth senior year and how, ultimately, being rejected from Brown last year was an amazing thing for my personal growth.

Reflection:

Strengths: grades, tests scores, class schedule, ESSAYS (my common app essay is gonna be featured in a local magazine), extracurriculars
Weaknesses: AGE; maybe “why concentration” essay since I essentially covered that in my common app essay;
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: growth from last year, ESSAYS (“voice”) esp common app and reflection about this past year, strength in extracurriculars
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:

General Comments:

I was much more chill about the college application process this year than last year, and I think that’s probably because I had more experience with what to expect (not to mention I have auto admit to UT). Beyond excited to be brown 2021!!! my dream!!!

Can any of you Brown ED class of 2021 share when the ADOC dates are going to be for this year, the admitted students visit days? Did they tell you? My daughter is applying regular decision. Thanks!

I think it is still true that ED-accepted students are not invited to ADOCH, it’s limited to RD acceptees. The dates have probably not been announced yet.

ED accepted students don’t get invited to ADOC. I guess those events are “marketing” and why market to students who are already committed to attending!

As others noted, ADOCH is for RD students; like other schools’ accepted student events, it’s designed to help accepted RD students make the decision to attend Brown. There is no need to market to ED students, who’ve already committed. 2017 dates are April 18-20. Here’s a link to the (very) general overview. http://www.goprovidence.com/adoch/ — accepted students receive a rather extensive packet about ADOCH once they are accepted.
