Does anyone know anyone who was accepted ED for Mechanical Engineering? If so, what were their stats?

@seal16, in fact, these stats are not high for Cal Poly engineering, they are typical. The average across the whole engineering school for last year 4.12 GPA and 32 ACT. Remember, that includes several engineering majors that are not competitive admits (>50% acceptance), so their stats will pull the overall average down. For ME, BME, Aero and CS, there’s no tougher public admit in California. People mistakenly use Poly as a safety, only to be rejected when they were accepted to UCB and UCLA (and then come onto the forum to complain about it). Only two schools in CA are more selective, Stanford and Cal Tech. If you are in state and your student wants Poly, I’d strongly advise ED. Good luck.

My mom saw my acceptance on the portal before I did. She immediately sprinted down the hallway to tell me about it. Did any one else have this happen to them?

@alextoria did you get bonus points for higher math or other subjects?

@Luckymomof3 you mean the extra grade point for AP classes? I did.

@Ray123 congrats!! What are your stats?

@alextoria no I was wondering if you got 500 bonus points for 8 semesters above Algebra 2/trig?

Ok for those deferred, do you know if when the decisions were being made if SLO “peaks” at the RD applicants to see what’s still coming?

@luckymomof3 Are these the bonus points you were talking about (besides the 8 semesters you get for AP/Honors credits)? You get these added to your overall score.
English (10 Semesters; 100 Bonus Points)
Algebra (4 ; 0 Bonus Points)
Geometry (2 ; 0 Bonus Points)
Foreign Language (8 ; 100 Bonus Points)
Lab Science (8 ; 200 Bonus Points)
History (4 ; 0 Bonus Points)
Performing Arts (4 ; 50 Bonus Points)
Advanced Math (4 ; 500 Bonus Points)

REQUIRED ARE BELOW
English (8 Semesters)
Algebra (4)
Geometry (2)
Foreign Language (4)
Lab Science (4)
History (4)
Performing Arts (2)

@Luckymomof3 what exactly are you asking? like what do you mean by “peak”

Im wondering when they deferred kids was it because they looked at RD apps and saw better stats? Or do they not look to see what’s coming in RD?

@heartwarriormom yes that is what I’m talking about.

Yeah I’m in the agriculture college (animal science major) and I got deferred too im going to call the school to see how many people of my major got in

@claudia318 yeah I hope we got deferred because they only accepted like 10% of the applicants in each major in agriculture, then I’d feel more confident about getting in regular decision.

Is this 2 semesters of Art or 2 years of Art?

@seal16 It’s 2 semesters of art required but 4 semesters is recommended with 50 bonus points given if you have 4 semesters

@heartwarriormom Does it have to be an official class? D only has one year of AP Art History. She is a junior now. But she took summer ballet intensive. Can it substitute for a second year?

I was admitted for food science (agriculture major) and one guy on here who was doing % of acceptance guess calculations said it was 70something% for my major. I don’t know how accurate that is but maybe it’ll help you other people trying to figure out the acceptance rate for your major in the ag college

@seal16 I’m from CA, and for a class to be an ‘f’ on the list of required a-g’s…it has to be listed on the UCDoorways website.
https://doorways.ucop.edu/list/app/home/
Type in the school name, and it will give you a list of what classes at your child’s school are considered a-g’s.
I heard that directly from an admission counselor at Cal Poly. I also used that website to see which junior college courses at a local jc she could use to pump up her list of a-g’s. For example, she took a speech class at a junior college to get the 10 semesters (not 8 that her high school offered) to get Cal Poly’s bonus points.

@seal16, 2 semesters are required and it needs to be a visual or performing art class (band, jazz band, theater, choir, drawing, pottery, dance, etc.). Unfortunately they are ridgid about this. Art History will not meet this requirement and they will not accept activities that are not on the student’s transcript. So, make sure your daughter takes an art, music, or theater class her senior year if she doesn’t have any yet and don’t fret about the bonus semesters. They’re only worth 50 points (1% of the MCA). Good luck.
