It possible to get “recruited” in the sense that a coach wants you on his/her team and might even mention that to the admissions office but its probably worth less than a good LOR from a research mentor. I think Caltech is the only school where this relationship is true lol.

Athletic recruit at the Ivies or similar means a guaranteed admit.

I was recruited for baseball at Caltech and the following is essentially what the coach told me (paraphrased).

I have very little influence on the admissions process. Essentially, I start with a scan of all athletes who take the SAT and score a 770 on Math and roughly 2250 overall and mark baseball or some other sport as an activity on the test. Then, I send an email to all of these individuals. They must show me some serious involvement and success in science and math ECs before I even bother to add them to the coach’s list. I submit these names to the admissions office and they take note of this. There may only be 1 or 2 of these students per year. In the end, recruitment acts as a tie-breaker, so to speak. If two equally qualified students are in contention over the last spot in a class and one happens to also be an athlete who wishes to play at the collegiate level, then the athlete will be admitted so to add a slight extra dimension to campus and to fill the necessary spots on a team.

Basically, I also agree that the post above was a ■■■■■ as atheletic recruitment at Caltech is, at most, a tap towards admission rather than any sort of hook.

thanks for the clarification, originalthought

am a long-time club soccer player with aspirations towards Caltech but never occurred to me that it could be a quality considered in my application.
actually, it’s hard to imagine semi-competitive teams at Caltech?

I don’t really know much about it, actually. I have actually never been to Caltech, so I should probably visit. I’ve just been traveling so much lately (I’m actually on the east coast right now and I’m from California), that I just wonder if I can afford it (time-wise).

I’m not sure. I’m visiting another college a couple days after I would get back, so I am also crunched for time. I haven’t visited Caltech, either, so I hope to at least visit for a day.

For prospective students: two things, show ur passion, and show the adcom that u have the ability to handle Caltech core. I’m pretty sure many of you apply for MIT.
Reflection: This is a little disappointing, but I guess if you look at my application overall there is really not a strong emphasis on science or math (I got the highest AMC10 score in our little state but our school couldn’t afford to administer AMC 12). Our school AP Calculus BC is a two year course, so maybe I should have taken the AB test last year. I also could’t take the AP Chem because of a conflict, both of which I am positive I would have gotten 5’s. The only real update to Adcom would be my final grades and this year’s AP test in physics c, bio, and calculus BC, but if they close the waitlist by mid May as they did last year, all would be too late. Hopefully I will get accepted to another school I really want to go and this will be a moot point. Congratulations and good luck.
