Official Caltech Class of 2015 EA/RD Decisions Thread

Waitlisted…does anyone know about Caltech’s waitlist? Is it like usual schools where you almost have no chance of getting in? Or am I just really disillusioned rigth now?

http://www.admissions.caltech.edu/uploads/File/WaitlistFAQ.pdf

From last year’s blog. Also, as I noted above, last year’s waitlist closed by mid May which means they filled their class quickly with few taken from the waitlist.

Every school seems to have rather different policies with waitlist and how many people get taken from the waitlist differs quite dramatically from year to year. If I remember last year MIT had something like 700 on the waitlist and took like 60.

Rejected

Don’t really feel like posting all my stats again, they are in page 2 (I was deferred). I’m actually surprised by how little I care. I think the fact that I got rejected because I wasn’t good enough is comforting in a way (instead of because some athlete, legacy, etc was chosen instead). Anyway, I got a likely from one of my schools, and still have 7 more to hear from.

Congratulations to the accepted, and good luck to my fellow rejectees (I don’t really know what to say to the waitlisted people)!

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Waitlisted – I’m okay with this. Knowing the cailber of the Caltech applicant pool, I applied to Caltech with the expectations that I would get outright rejected. However, this probably means I’m going to get rejected from MIT too. :frowning: Oh well; I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for at least something good on Pi Day! [/ul]

They said something about strengthening the application…is there a point to that? When and if they choose people from the list will it just be random or will we be re-evaluated?

Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I really have no idea how i got into Caltech cuz of my freakin low CR score on the SAT. So i’m guessing my essays and recs were good

[/ul]Subjective[ul]

[]Awards: NYUAD CW finalist, AIS Humaid Al-Mazrouei Award for Mathematics, MARRS International Spelling Bee State Level participant (school level finalist as well), ACER Global Achieve Exams
[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Well I’m honestly from a family who can’t afford much (only $45000 for a family of 6). CalTech wasn’t one of my top choices, I’m bit disheartened since I’m out of school now for a year (because of family probs and I couldn’t apply abroad in my senior year), and I got rejected twice to a place I applied before as well. CalTech’s my third rejection, but I’m a bit nervous now.[/li]In my opinion, I don’t think my essays could’ve hurt, prolly my scores and the fact that I asked for a lot of financial aid (CalTech is NOT need-blind for internationals).
I just hope for a green light from MIT. [/ul]

[]Essays: My common app essay was on the global energy crisis which was something that I feel very passionately about and I think that that came across. My caltech main supplemental essay was focussed around who I was and what aspects of my life showed my interest in science and math but I didn’t think that it was an exceptionally great read. The honor code essay was well done but the humour essay was kind of done last minute and it was less of an essay and more of a showing of a funny essay that a friend wrote [I checked it just now and there was a typo! I advise applicants to really be passionate about something when they’re writing their essays and write about that if in doubt about what topic to go with.[/ul]
