Official Claremont McKenna Class of 2013 RD Decisions

rejected…didn’t realize it was so competitive. It seems grades are less important than many other factors.

However, five minutes after I saw the online CMC rejection my dad came home with my haverford acceptance letter (as I was writing this post, in fact). So. meh, I guess it balances out.

haha sorry, I forgot to remove the duke stuff :P

hey politica18, i was at scholars weekend, not sure if i remember you, (i got better at remembering people by where they were from rather than there names, lol).

yeah. i heard back about the mckenna scholarship. it should be at the bottom of the followup email they send to you.

wow that was the biggest epic fail for my internet, but.

[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred//waitlisted/rejected: I put a lot of myself into my essays[/li][/ul]General Comments:
CMC has been one of my top choices for such a long time, but now that I’m realizing the costs, I’m really not sure it’s practical for me to go since Rice & UT are less than half the price of CMC’s full ticket. I’m still really happy and now I’m trying to figure out when I can visit because I’ve never been to Claremont before!

Thanks bulldog; I found it =)

I was waitlisted, what are the chances of getting in from the waitlist? Does anyone know how many kids were admitted?

Decision: Wait-Listed

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
Honestly, my CMC leadership/influence essay was my best one. I’m ****ing confused; are Northwestern and Berkeley less competitive than CMC? Whatever.

… 4th Waitlist. But hey guys, I’m not rejected anywhere yet! (cringe)

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2240
[] SAT II: 740 French, 690 Math I, 680 World History
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.1 - WEIGHTED. My GPA is questionable b/c I took a junior year abroad to France.
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 5%
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP English Lang (5), AP French Lang (5), AP French Lit (3) WILL TAKE: AP English Lit, AP Bio, AP US History. Which is more than anyone else from my class will graduate with.
[] Senior Year Course Load: Those AP courses, plus Honors Calculus, an honors history course, religion requirement, and advanced studio art.
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Commended Merit Scholar, AP Scholar, some in-school stuff.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Speech & Debate - State Champion, few national wins. Record isn’t as great as it could have been because I was gone for a year. Thus no captain title either.
Violin- 11 yrs of experience overall, done a bit of everything, including regional orchestras, school theatre groups, jazz ensembles…
A bunch of background in current events… attended conferences and such… my inteded major is IR.
[] Job/Work Experience: 2 summers working 40 hour weeks at an Organic Farm.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Not too much… work at Big Brothers & Big Sisters, local neighborhood organization.
[] Summer Activities: Before I worked, I did such things as Concordia Language Villages and debate camp.
[] Essays: Never loved them. Supplement covered Paul Newman- that was very well written, but my argument might not have been totally convincing. I argued he pioneered the organic food market and celebrity philanthropy.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One english translation from my French Lit teacher, another from my US history teacher who had known me for like two months…
[] Counselor Rec: Stellar.
[] Interview: On-campus. I am great at interviews, I had the impression that it went really well. I was told I was a great fit for the school.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant):MA-ssachusetts.
[] School Type: Small, catholic, and such.
[] Ethnicity: White (d’oh)
[] Gender: Female (double d’oh)
[] Income Bracket: EFC 15k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I thought I was a really great fit for this school. My academic interests definitely fit, and I am most certainly the pragmatic type. I tried to make that clear in my application. I was seriously considering applying ED, and I regret not doing so now.
[] Weaknesses: Weak math grades since France. GPA wasn’t perfect. Not many volunteering hours. Never got much leadership to speak of since I went abroad.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred//waitlisted/rejected: Since this is my *counts 4th time around the block, I have come up with a good rationalization. Simply put, too many applicants, crappy economy, and I guess I should I have started the essays in the summer, not the week beforehand.
[/ul]General Comments: This was the one school I thought really “fit me”. I am hating the wait-list limbo, and not expecting to hear good news from any of my remaining schools, since they are just as selective as the ones I have been waitlisted at. But I guess with 4 chances out there, maybe something will turn up.

… tough luck.

Uh… Waitlisted.

GPA 3.7 UW/4.17 W
Top 10%
SAT 800 CR, 780 M, 690 W
SATII 800 MIIC, 760 Chem
AP 10 courses, Distinguished Scholar

Econ Major
Great ECs
Wrote my best essay for CMC’s supplemental

Kind of shocked, but got into some great schools, so not too worried

wait listed

waitlisted also…i dont feel like doing the format thing so here are my stats:
2200 (780 cr, 690 m, 730 w)
3.9 UW GPA
ranked 8/330
I think my essays were pretty good, and I had several leadership roles throughout high school. Congrats to everyone who got in! And for those who didn’t, it will be ok, there’s other schools out there.

Waitlisted.

ACT: 33
SAT: CR- 670, 640 Math- 740, 700 Writing- 730, 680
SAT II: Literature 710 Math I- 770
UWGPA: 3.72
WGPA: 4.50
rank: 89/860
AP: English Lang (5), Psychology (5), Government (5), US History (4)
Gender: F
Ethnicity: Asian
School: Large public school in Illinois

reaction: whatever. My interviewer was an arrogant jerk and he kind of ruined the whole CMC for me.

sb22- assuming a number of things including about 90 were taken for ED (similar to last year), that last year’s RD yield stays the same (~33%), and they are targeting a total enrollment of 280, I calculate 590 were accepted RD, for a 15% RD accept rate, and an overall accept rate of 16% (ED + RD).

According to last year’s CDS: http://www.claremontmckenna.edu/ir/CDS2008_2009.pdf</a>
511 were offered WL
222 accepted a place on the WL, and
0 were admitted off the waitlist

WL dynamics tend to vary year to year considerably, though. From what I’ve been reading, this year might be another big year for using WL’s generally. Don’t exactly know why CMC did not use the WL last year…might have something to do with what appears to be overenrollment last year (320 vs 280 targeted this year). Perhaps there will be more use this year?

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 770 CR, 780 M, 800 W
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT II: 800 Math II, 800 Physics, 780 US History
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/137 (tied with 5 others)
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 on Calculus AB and US History
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: Hardest in school, took official AP classes in English and Biology, and independent studies for Calculus BC and Macroeconomics
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Novel writing (none), volunteer computer assistance (none), track (4 years, not captain - that is, none), Mock Trial (none), We the People (none), fable book for Nepalese charity (none), student council for two years (nothing substantial)
[] Job/Work Experience: 1 winter at local ski area, 2 summers at local ice cream shop
[] Volunteer/Community service: As noted above, the computer assistance. It totaled about 250 hours over 3 years
[] Summer Activities: Nothing prestigious; my job in 2007 and 2008, and the novel writing described above in 2008
[] Essays: The Commonapp essay was very strong, as everyone who reads it invariably remarks; I agree with such assessments of its quality. The leadership essay was about Leon Trotsky’s integral role in forming the Soviet Union; it was good, but not exceptional.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was strong, and did a good job of making me look well-rounded beyond my intelligence. The other was very strong, basically stating I was exceptionally smart, but not arrogant. They both were helpful in presenting an aspect of me not found in the essays.
[] Counselor Rec: Although generic, he helped note how my independent-studies of APs differentiated me from others in my class.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[li] Interview:
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Oregon
[] Country (if international applicant): N/A
[] School Type: Rural public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: 60-100k
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My novel, maybe; when considering CMC emphasis, none.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Numbers, especially subject tests, as well as the quality and contents of my essays.
[] Weaknesses: My clear lack of leadership.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred//waitlisted/rejected: My leadership ECs were essentially nonexistent, which is something that is a major hindrance in the admissions process here. The admissions committee had to have looked at my application and concluded I wouldn’t have integrated well into the CMC student culture; they are completely right in that assessment. The only reason I believe I was waitlisted rather than rejected is that my numbers caused them to consider an outright rejection inappropriate.[/li][/ul]General Comments:

I am surprised, actually. I didn’t think I would even be waitlisted, because of the conspicuous nature of my leadership inadequacy. However, about 10 days after I applied, I realized I didn’t wish to attend, even with an acceptance, so I will be declining their offer of a waitlist in order to clear room for applicants who might want to attend. I’ve already received a likely letter from Dartmouth and official acceptance from Northwestern, so I have absolutely no reason to remain on the list. Congratulations to those who were accepted and want to go, and best of luck to those on the waitlist wishing for a similar outcome as those who have been accepted.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2230 (730CR, 730M, 770WR)

[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): ~3.95
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): not ranked
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): World History (4), Chemistry (3), French (2)  horrible I know, U.S. History(3), Biology, English
[li] Senior Year Course Load: most challenging, 2 colleges classes per semester
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): History Club (VP and founding member 11th, president 12th), Varsity Tennis (9th-12th), Varsity Soccer (9th-12th), Varisty Basketball (9th-12th, Captain 12th), county Honors Choir, Quiz Bowl (9th-12th, captain 11th-12th)
[] Job/Work Experience: n/a
[] Volunteer/Community service: volunteer/intern at local historical society
[] Summer Activities: volunteer, trips abroad
[] Essays: I liked my CommonApp ones, my CMC one a couple people told me was a bit daring and maybe too risky
[] Teacher Recommendation: I didn’t get to read them but I assume one fantastic, one probably so-so
[] Counselor Rec: I don’t know, probably generic because she doesn’t know me at all
[] Interview: didn’t have time for nor did I want one at the time
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
[] Intended Major: Undecided
[] State (if domestic applicant): PA
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: Puerto Rican
[] Gender: Female
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, few people at my school go to top colleges?
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: transcript, teacher rec
[] Weaknesses: lack of significant amounts of leadership
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: no idea…
[/ul]General Comments:
I don’t know how I feel exactly. I’ve been preparing myself for a rejection all day so it was better than I thought. It seems to me though that a LOT of people were waitlisted. Not sure if I’ll stay on the waitlist, depends on my other decisions. Congrats to everyone who made it!

jwarlick: CMC has very small amount of students that they accept, and given the niche that they occupy, have different admissions standards than gigantic numbers based Berkeley, and uber competitive, large Northwestern.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2280 (730 CR, 750 M, 800W)
[] ACT: 33
[] SAT II: Lit:790, Math II: 770, US History: 760
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.85ish
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 10% UW, almost top 10 W
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): USH (5) Lit (5) Calc AB (5) Macro (5) Micro (4-also, I independent studied this one). Planning on taking French, Comp, US Gov and Calc BC
[] Senior Year Course Load: Pretty intense, a lot of classes at my local university including literature, composition, global politics and intermediate microeconomics
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): MN High School Press Association Best Editorail in State, National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar with Distinction

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Swam for my high school and a local club, Speech team, school newspaper (editor), Model United Nations (VP of Security Council), humanitiarian club (president), microlending club (co-founder, student leader), high school robotics/lego league (achieved a lot of success in this: won state, won a research competition, submitted our research paper into international nanotechnology conference, got a job subcontracting for NASA), freshman mentor, NHS
[] Job/Work Experience: student researcher subcontracting for NASA (see above), private math tutor
[] Volunteer/Community service: organized a lot of charity events through the humanitarian club i run, manage for the boys swim team, mentor rookie teams for lego league
[] Summer Activities: pretty much covered above, also attended Conference on National Affairs through Youth in Government, swam a lot, worked
[] Essays: I thought these were pretty good. My English teachers have always told me I am a great writier, and I was passionate about all the essays I wrote for this school.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One of them I read, and it was spectacular, said I was one of the best students she has ever taught and that I really contribute a lot to the community, am very inquisitive, etc. Other one was written by my AP Macroeconomics teacher (subject I want to major in) and newspaper advisor. Should have been pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably fairly generic. Have been bumped around to different counselors a lot, which is very frustrating since I had made such an effort to get to know all of my counselors.
[] Additional Rec: CEO of company I student researched at.
[li] Interview: N/A
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): MN
[] School Type: fairly competitive public
[] Ethnicity: Middle Eastern
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: too much for any significant financial aid :frowning:
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): born in Israel, have traveled very extensively

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Rigor of courses, test scores, varied extracurriculars, strong writer
[] Weaknesses: lower GPA than some applicants, not as many leadership positions (swim capitan positions were incredibely competitive my year, I was crushed not to get it, especially knowing that I am a very strong leader on my team and that I have put in such a time commitment)
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred//waitlisted/rejected: it really is starting to feel like a crapshoot. Why does anyone get accepted/deferred/waitlisted/rejected? Although I do think that I am a very good fit for the school, which probably helped me not get rejected. I wrote my leadership essay on Joseph Stiglitz, who is my idol. I was so proud of that essay. Oh well. At least waitlist is still a chance.[/li][/ul]General Comments: CMC is my third-choice school (after Columbia and Georgetown, which I’m probably not going to get into), so I was pretty bummed not to get accepted. I love that it is small, but still part of a consortium. It’s also completely perfect for what I want to go into (economic policy-making); most schools have economics policies that focus a lot on business rather than policy. I would have really loved to have gone to this school. I guess I still have a chance, but following a shocking waitlist from GW and a rejection from Duke, this has made my week kind of a downer. Oh well. Congrats to everyone who got in and consolations to everyone who didn’t. Good luck with your college search.

I think I only got an acceptance because I wrote about RON PAUL. :)

^Haha, that’s pretty neat. I tried to stay as far away from politics as possible; I wrote about Mama from A Raisin in the Sun and I really do think that essay helped me out a lot! Good job to you!

waitlisted
i’m guessing the chance to get accepted from waitlisted is almost impossible.
