Going to attend? Who knows. He was accepted early to University of Notre Dame , accepted at at USC with $$ and got accepted at UC Berkeley...but waitlisted at BC???

bus52

I would have been surprised at a waitlist with your S's stats. Sounds like he still has great choices! Did he just get his letter today? Admissions seem like a crap shoot.

Thanks. He's fine. I think when he didn't get in EA and watched the posts on CC and saw that not one deferred person had higher stats than him, he realized BC just didn't like something and prepared himself for rejection (waitlist). That's the way it goes sometimes. BC's loss.

His letter arrived Saturday to CA with a March 28th postmark.

Good Luck.

I FINALLY got the letter today. Postmarked March 29th. My friend's letters took 3 days, mine took 7... go figure.

Still no letter in Missouri. Good luck in making your final college choice!

Postmarked March 30th.

Received letter today. WAITLISTED. HUH.

Still nothing here in MD, but then again we seem to have no mail whatsoever today, which is weird. My D has psychologically moved on from BC by now. No enrollment link, no letter, ridiculously late date.

Congrats Flylikeapenguin!!

Anyone else still waiting on a decision letter from Boston College? Nothing again today in Missouri.

Congrats Adelais! Where do you thinks you will go?

Hi momstl4, nothing here in Maryland, out in the DC suburbs, either (2 days post from Boston).

We've psychologically moved on, but keep checking for final closure. Until this week, BC was her first choice. This leaves a negative flavor, though it could be USPS.

It's probably a moot point, in any event, since her Agora lacks the enrollment links. Still, I don't think I'll pay another application fee to them for either of my younger sons.

BC's good, just not so good that they can treat applicants rather poorly. April 15??? Hello, IF she gets in, she does have to make a decision and we'd hoped to get her up there for a second look. It's getting really late for making travel plans!!!

Thanks, BC, you are SOOOO considerate. Sarcasm intended.

Finally got the thin envelope from BC. Postmarked April 2, so that bit about all mail going out on March 28... right. I admit I'm kind of surprised D was rejected because her stats seemed good to me and her GC called it a match. SAT over 2200, SAT 2's all in the 700's , weighted GPA 4.1 from a known grade deflated school, 8 AP's with all 4s and 5s so far, lots of ECs and a part time job of 20 hours per week. Her recs were not seen but no reason to think they weren't excellent. Her essays seemed fine to me. But obviously, what do I know since she will clearly not be in Boston next fall. BC was one of her two top choices and I am stumped about how she got rejected when others with her stats or lower were accepted, some even to honors. Has BC developed a case of Tufts syndrome or something?

But since BC kept her hanging so long she has long since mentally moved on to her other options and isn't looking back. As I said before, even if she had been admitted, I think the wait killed her interest long before the letter even arrived. So good luck to those who got in. May the financial aid gods shine on you enough so that you can actually attend this school. To those who are still waiting, my sympathies.

momstl4-- Thanks :) I was very surprised... I realized that being home schooled made me something of a risk (No GPA or class rank) so I was quite happy. Right now, I'm thinking I'll go to Dartmouth-- it's smaller and seems like a better fit for me.

I'm really surprised people are still waiting for their letters. I live in Austria, mail takes forever to get here-- it's insane that I heard back before people who actually live in the states.

D is still waitingto hear from BC. Of all the schools, BC has handled the admission process rather poorly. We have decided to strike BC out of our list. D is now between UVA and UC Berkeley.

We will not apply to BC for my younger D either.

crazyadad - As much as I love BC, this is pretty typical of how the school handles so much stuff. For whatever reason, BC can't seem to handle procedural things in an efficient, orderly manner. I don't get it. There are so many bright, wonderful, passionate about BC types that work there, I just can't figure our why they continue to do things like this.

Dogwood:

Thanks for understanding. I hope some BC adcoms read this thread and do something about it. We love BC and the Boston area but we are turned off by the way we are being treated as prospective student and parents. It really showed disrespect. No communications during the process. We are now 4/7, we have heard from all the schools and we have not heard from BC since Jan 1. We are now leaning toward the University of Virginia and BC is definitely out of the picture. Our view is that it's BC's loss.

They should learn something from the UVA and JHU. They have an admission blogs where you learn the ins and outs of the process almost on a daily basis: where do they stand with reviewing, when a certain things get sent out, when will we expect to hear about Honors programs, decision, financial aid, etc..They take questions online, etc..
Once my D gets accepted, they sent video, schedules for admitted student days, and welcome material in a few days.
My D really felt welcome and wanted.

I would also love to think the BC folks lurk here because I think they should understand the kind of ill will their disrespect creates. I hate to say it because my D loved the school, but I will warn anyone I hear is considering applying next year to make sure they are ready to put up with being ignored and left hanging and perhaps even misled (Someone here posted that BC told them all letters went out on 3/28 and hers was postmarked 4/2). I really do not understand why they cannot conduct their admissions process more humanely since other schools seem to manage. I'm not so much upset about D getting rejected because she has moved on to being enthusiastic about the schools that have shown her they care. But I admit I am upset about the way BC has demonstrated that they truly couldn't care less about letting her know their decision within a reasonable timeframe.

Letter finally arrived today in Missouri - REJECTED.

Was surprised but not shocked even though my S's scores were similar to most of those who got in. Letter was postmarked April 4. I wonder why it took them so long to send a rejection. Well, he still has some good choices left. BC needs to get their act together about sending out the decisions a little closer together or e-mail notifications to applicants.

Just a little insight from a current student...

Ok, so I'm obviously not an admissions counselor, and what I say is nothing official in any manner, but I just had a few thoughts to share after reading some of the previous posts. I love my school and will do anything to defend it, and although they could be more efficient in terms of contacting applicants in a more timely manner, here are a few things to consider:

1) You may have heard this many times already, but it is still noteworthy. BC receives a lot of applications. A LOT. 28,500 (ish), to be more precise. It is the 4th-most applied to private school in the country, and the three above it (BU, NYU, and USC) have undergraduate populations more than double BC's. Maybe this suggests that BC should hire more admissions people, yes, but at such a competitive institution, they can't just hire somebody off the streets. The adcoms must be familiar with BC as an institution and be able to identify the qualities that BC looks for in applicants, whatever those qualities may be. And when applications rise by 5000 in two years, it is hard to find enough qualified counselors to meet demand. So, for this year, BC extends the deadline to April 15. Not perfect, but seems fair enough.

2) I volunteer in the admissions office. Not with the admissions counselors, but I greet prospective students and their families and (attempt to) answer their questions about Boston College. Anyway, from hearing what goes on in the office, I am nearly certain that BC staggers in sending out their decision letters. Why, I am not completely sure. I assume it is a simple issue of time. After reading and making decisions for the 28,000 prospective students, they start to send out the letters. Is it physically possible to sign, stuff, seal, and send all 28,000 packets/letters in one day? Absolutely not. So I assume that BC prefers to start sending out letters as soon as they're done, so that at least SOME students can hear of their decisions early, rather than the alternative of waiting until April 14th when every single letter is ready to go, and then sending them out. Also keep in mind that students nationally are applying to multiple schools and everyone is expecting to hear on April 1. Think about Boston itself...there's bound to be a mess when BC, MIT, BU, Harvard, Tufts, Brandeis, Babson, UMass, and Suffolk (just to name a few) send out their letters at the same time.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, Give BC a chance. I know many of the admissions counselors personally (all of whom are excellent people) and believe me, they understand the students' anxiety and do everything IN THEIR POWER to communicate decisions as soon as possible. I can guarantee that nobody, nobody at BC means to "disrespect" or "ignore" applicants. It just becomes a difficult process when the popularity of the school increases at an unprecedented amount. After all, BC DID say that April 15th was the date for this year, because they realized that with the number of aps they had, it was bound to take more time. If you receive your decisions after that date, I do encourage you to call and complain to admissions, but in the meantime, I hope you will reconsider your views about BC. I can tell you, it's an incredible place and even if this sounds cheesy, it's also "worth the wait". Thanks.

xcjimmy1228, thanks for the above insight. My son was recently admitted to BC and we had no problems or delays at all throughout the process. Everything was done very professionally. We love the school and he can't wait to attend so it is hard to hear about all the problems others have faced (multiple copies of admissions brochures being sent to seniors who have already applied; enrollment links appearing on agora before letters were received, causing endless speculation; delayed notifications, etc.). I've been trying to think of a way to relay this info to Admissions - I'm sure when Admissions "season" is over they would want to take steps to make sure none of these problems recur in the future. The last thing they would want is to taint the reputation of the school and cause people not to want to apply. Since you work in Admissions, is there any way you can bring these things to their attention, or at least point them to these discussions to enlighten them?

Decision finally in: Waitlist, as anticipated. Dated April 5 and thanking her for her patience. Moving on.

xcjimmy, thanks for your post. Can you pass on to admissions counselors that next year they need to put better info online? We'd figured she wasn't admitted by now, thanks to the poor agora link and it just made sense they'd get the admits out first. They really need to communicate better.
They said April 15, but many heard earlier, leaving others wondering what was going on. My daughter's friends were admitted more than a week before she heard. All other schools got notifications out by April 1.

To all who are going, enjoy, there is no doubt it's a great school.
