does anybody know how many kids were accepted under EA?

it says there were 7000 ea aps

Dear Zoot : Some things that you might want to consider at this point if BC really is your daughter's first choice :

[1] Consider having your school principal personally call the admissions office and discuss your High School curriculum and press the issue as to how rigorous your daughter's schedule might have been.

[2] As you saw in a previous note written, GPA and class rank has GAINED (apparently) in import recently. As a result, discuss how a 3.8 UW becomes more than 5 in a weighted model. This seems to say that the AP class room scores might have been subpar. Hard to read between the lines here.

[3] Some thoughts as to what is missing : Track is only a one season sport - was this all that has been offered on the sports side? Are there any music (instrumental, voice) details to offer? While in the Art Honor Society, how did that translate in this profile? Any academic awards ? You are correct that the extra curriculars and volunteerism looks thin. Anything you can do to augment your daughter's resume has to be front and center at this point.

Good luck with the RD pool and tell your daughter to keep her chin up!

Dear jorr08 : Interesting point from Yale last year - there were 3500 early applications from a total pool of 19000. This year, BC has about 7000 early applications from an anticipated pool of 30000 applications.

Yale has about 1800 spots to be filled; BC about 2250. Now, forgetting about the correlation in applications (meaning the overlap and perceived preference for Yale), you see how hard the numbers are.

In general, about 1/4 to 1/3 of the available slots are offered for EA - your mileage might vary slightly, but as a rule that pretty well envelopes the range.

so about 800 were admitted to BC?
or do u think it was more because it was EA?

Scottj,

Although obviously a bit of a disappointment, the deferral was more of an eye-opener for my daughter. Until this point in time, she's not suffered much rejection so a little every now and then, is good for her. We don't always get what we want in life even if we work hard, which she doesn't do.

Don't even get me started on the crazy GPAs in our school system. I'm an assistant principal at an elementary school in our district and even I'm confused as to how students can graduate with GPAs so high. The #1 in my daughter's class has a GPA of over 6.0. At a local IB school, they have a student with a GPA of 8.0 something. There's a lot of students here trying to one up each other by taking online classes to push up their GPAs. Honors and AP classes here give you an additional .5 added to your GPA. IB classes an additional 1 point.

Track is the only sport my daughter could do due to limited athletic ability. I don't mean she's disabled in anyway--she simply sucks athletically--to put it very bluntly. I've encouraged her because she keeps it up even though she's not good because I think it's important for smart kids to struggle at something--it makes them a little more humble. She would NEVER make a team sport.

Her ECs are definitely thin. I've been telling her that since 9th grade but a mom doesn't really know that much, you know. = ) She's lazy many times. She gets by on raw talent a lot. And, quite frankly, it's good when she gets a dose of reality.

Thanks for your kind words. We're hopeful for RD, but she's been accepted so far at all her other schools so her life will go on regardless of what she may feel right now.

what are the honors qualifications stats-wise? not for me, but i have a friend who was deferred with a 32, and she doesnt see how she wasnt admitted, since her ACT "automatically qualified" her for honors. said it was on the website? is that true?

no thats not true, there are no act or sat scores that will "qualify" you for something.

You have to be in the top 5% or something to get into Honors.

vc08: your friend seems to be very mistaken.

does anybody know how many kids get in from EA?

i haven't gotten my letter yet! does anyone know if agora will show yet whether we're in or deferred or rejected?
I'm nervous:(

it will show on the 25th

im just worried about Financial Aid

Dear vc08 : Some words about the Honors Program. (This information is lifted from About A&S Honors Program - Boston College)

THE HONORS PROGRAM within the College is one of the oldest in the country. It was started in 1958 to challenge superior students to work to the best of their potential, to provide a more integrated approach to the core subjects which all Boston College students are required to take, and to organize these studies historically, in the belief that students should have a solid foundation for the more specialized studies they subsequently do in their majors.

ABOUT 140 STUDENTS enter the Program annually. They generally have combined SAT's in the range of 1450 and are usually in the top 5% of their high-school classes, though we try hard to hunt out the off-beat students who may not score as well but who have several years of Greek or have founded literary journals or worked at interesting jobs or have earned unusual recommendations from their high-school teachers. Superior first-year students are also admitted to the Honors Program as sophomores each year, on the recommendation of instructors in their first-year courses. The total number of A&S students in all four years of the Honors Program is approximately 500. About 100 seniors complete the requirements and graduate with Honors standing each year.

There are also honors programs in the Carroll School of Management, the School of Nursing, and the School of Education. Their requirements differ from those of the A&S Honors Program.

[li] Going to attend?[/ul] Good possibility. BC is my #2 - second only to Amherst. Still want to hear from other colleges though and financial aid & scholarships will be a factor.
[/li]

Congratulation to all those accepted, best of luck to those deferred and rejected -- I firmly believe we will all end up attending the schools we're meant to go to.

*also according to my letter, for those who were asking, they accepted 2,250 out of over 7,000 EA applicants so about 32%.

@vc08 yeah. we all tend to not think rationally when we hear bad news.

so if i have not received a letter yet (when everyone else in my neighborhood has), do i even bother to call and ask? are they just gonna say wait until the 25th? (christmas??!)

hm. maybe it's because i applied as an international student...? but i love on long island.. so unless they send out those letters at different times...

how much does that suck, finding out whether you get accepted/rejected/deferred on christmas day...?
