Official Class of 2014 CMU Decisions Thread

Search last years Carnegie Mellon threads. I think some people got theirs in March but double check that.

check this out…

[Decision Letters - Jaycie Galbraith](http://www.enrollment.cmu.edu/admission/blogs/jaycieg/2009/03/decision-letters.html)

thats what happened last year

just wanted to let people know about the acceptance rate for ED applicants - so that everyone can gain a little perspective - for the computer science program, only 21 ED applicants were admitted… imagine, only 21 (the class size last year was 135). Less than 10% acceptance -that is “MIT/Harvard” selective… with the popularity of CS as well as CMU’s new facilities, perhaps they should think about increasing the class size???

That is all wild guestimation at this point…the actual percentages will be out at the end of the entire admission cycle.

That said-- while only 135 are officially in the freshman class— students transfer in and out of SCS internally – so it is still possible to be a CS major at CMU and not be accepted to SCS as a freshman.

Also, 21 seems low-- as the FB 2014 SCS page already has more than that number and we assume that less than all applicants even made it to FB.

Good luck all applicants!

ACCEPT
ED1 SCS and CIT-ECE
wrote my essay on being a double major-- hope I can actually pull it off…

[SAT-- Didn’t take them
ACT-- 32 across the board superscore-- nothing exciting for sure
SAT IIs: chem 800 bio 760 mathIIC770
GPA:3.83 unweighted 4.61 weighted
(A+ on my APs helped)
Rank: School doesn’t rank-- guessing top 5% (My GC probably noted that in his letter)
AP exams: Chem 5, ComSciAB 5

Essays: Excellent common ap and supplement-- my 10th grade english teacher said wow-- moved her to tears , and GC said they were outstanding (Lots of heart in my essays-- but not any great sentence structure or vocab…just wrote in my own voice)

Teacher Recs: My science one was probably generic, my AP CS teacher thinks I walk on water…had lots to say about my programs and that I often helped other students
Counselor Rec:Probably average/generic-- he writes like 150 of them a year…what could I possibly expect here from someone I see twice a year if that

Hook (if any): Went to CMU Pre-college and got an A in Intro to ECE - a weeder course-- that probably tied it up for me, and URM(hispanic/cauc – but I don’t belong to any hispanic ECs…so I really doubt that played any role in anything here), I brought cookies to the admissions officer who I had an interview with at a COD weekend in November

School Type: Public School
Ethnicity: Hispanic/Cauc combo
Gender: male
Extracurric: the usual for an ECE: FIRST Robotics, math team, CS competitions plus varsity athletics in a winter and spring sport and two significant meaningful community service activies (one I asst coach soccer for young ones…)

^^ 21 is about right, considering it is ED and binding.

DD is one of the 131 in this year’s SCS freshman class (class of 2013). Over all, there were 2627 applicants, 401 accepted and 131 enrolled. So the acceptance rate was about 15%.

@ mom2012and14 a lot of people who joined the FB group are from the class of 2013

that number (21 admitted) comes from the admissions department for the ED applicants for Computer Science.

Wow, this is freaky. There are 7 out of the 21 accpeted SCS students toiling in CC, that’s 33% of the ED class. Looking at their stats and EC, this gives a very good picture of what kind of students they are looking for.

Only two people joined the FB group for Tepper…I wonder why?

CMU should have made it clearer about how hard it is to get admitted to CS from ED - admissions said that there are no deferrals to RD - just yes or no-

Maybe they should change their admission talks - went ED because they said that those were the students they first offered “need-based” money to…

It is probably better to put yourself in the general pool of applicants…

Also, it seems like doing a summer program there before you apply is quite helpful.

Numbers and demonstrated skill really do have nothing to do with admissions -

PhD - Did they tell you how many people applied ED for SCS?

Not the SCS one…only the main one is populated by 2013 and 2012 Current students…
SCS and CIT are mostly 2014 students

Bottom line…I dont’ see what the fuss is in figuring out how many students were accepted ED…it’s useless information.

i don’t think it is a “fuss” to look at statistics - you are obviously the parent of one of the lucky ones that got admitted.

i think the “fuss” is about helping those who didn’t get admitted to not see it as a reflection on themselves, but rather that admissions to college programs can really be “hit or miss”.

CMU is a tough program to get into and those who are applying next year should read up and ask a lot of questions of the admissions officers. it seems like one of the best bets to get in is to do one of their “pre-college” programs.

let’s face it, this thread is now to help those who come after us…

over 200 applicants for ED

PhD - Thanks for the info.

I agree – the goal here is to assist others…my apologies if the tone of my comments was misconstrued. Indeed- much of admissions is hit and miss-- as we all know, there are at least 3-5 qualified admissible students for every seat in high quality programs such as CMU-SCS. (Princeton for example claims it could fill 3 freshmen classes from its applicant pool!) A rejection clearly should not be thought of as a personal reflection as an inability to be successful as a computer science student in other quality programs.

I agree, pre-college is important-- it tells the institution if you can or cannot do the caliber of work at CMU. Just for the record, as I’m sure any of the pre-college admits here can confirm - some of their peers at pre-college were in fact rejected. Those earning "C"s most clearly are rejected…it should be a mutual signal that a potential match just isn’t there if pre-college isn’t a successful experience.

Again - my apologies.

BTW - my S was rejected from MIT early decision…the point being - you just never know …and there are many many many many excellent schools to study CS.

Congrats Calc! Thats is truly great!!

congrats calc, judging from your username, im assuming you applied to mcs for math? :P
