OFFICIAL Class of 2021 Michigan State University Admissions/Acceptance Thread

@nikhil99 Your standard application is your application for the Honors College. HOWEVER, according to the Honors College admissions website, if you don’t hear from them about acceptance by Jan 1, you can submit an essay and your 7th semester grades for further consideration. The prompt for the essay is on that website page. I guess I kind of assume since S got the University Scholars award, and University Scholars and the Honors College National Scholarship are mutually exclusive that he was passed over on the 1st round of HC acceptances. It’s his choice whether he wants to proceed, and he says he does. He may be a better fit for the Academic Scholars Program, but we shall see…

Yes @dcolosi, that was our experience, too–just got the scholarship letter on Mon. S got the same awards as your D along with the $3k per year Red Cedar (because he’s a legacy).

@2janner2 yea I heard back today! (Got the email saying that there was a change in my account)
I applied sept 1 if that provides any insight

@MSU88CHEng Thanks for getting back to me. D was accepted Oct. 5, but I haven’t rec’d. scholarship letter yet. I imagine it’s coming - her stats are almost identical. $8K is not bad, was hoping for a bit more, but we’ll be able to swing it if she really wants to go. She had such a great visit - may have to visit one more time before making final decision. Thanks again. Good luck to your son!

@c011e9e yes it does! my 12-week mark is next week, so I am hoping that I will hear back soon

Oooh I’m excited for you! Be sure to let me know when you get your acceptance

I applied on October 30 and there hasn’t been any change to my portal… I’m worried because people that have applied way later than me have gotten in. I also emailed the MSU office of admissions to double check if there was anything wrong with my application, and they said there wasn’t…

Just got accepted in the engineering program!

@c011e9e haha will do! :wink:

I forgot to post it, but I got accepted last week!
OOS
UW GPA- 3.9 (school doesn’t do weighed)
Old SAT- 1970 (700 Reading, 610 Math)
Accepted into Biochem and Molecular Bio/Biotech major

Just got my financial aid letter but I guess no Honors College :frowning:

Does scholarship money appear of the financial award letter or is it a separate notification?

S17 got a letter with scholarship notification from the office of admissions. We are still working on the FAFSA, so we haven’t heard anything about other FA.

So I easily got into MSU, but I have yet to receive any letters. I got my acceptance late november, just a few weeks ago, and thinking about sending a letter for Honors College to consider me (but idk if I should because I can still get “High Honors” on my diploma if top 6% of my class), but I have to ask my admissions officer for my region first.

BUT what I’m mostly worried about is that I didn’t receive any merit aid scholarships. Do they send them to you? Do you apply? Do you request to be considered for them? How does this work? I really need some money, especially since I don’t qualify for FA

@bloxJacket My daughter rec’d. her acceptance Oct. 5 and we just got merit award letter this past Saturday. She had received her official acceptance information several weeks after that Oct. 5 date.

It’s safe to assume I won’t be getting any merit scholarships if I didn’t get into the Honors College right? I did have a 33 ACT but my 3.72 GPA and lack of leadership-based ECs seemed to have held me back.

@jt1216 Are you OOS or a MI resident? There is a university scholars award for OOS students who have above a 3.5+ gpa and SAT above 1160 or ACT above 24. There’s also a 1-time study abroad scholarship for OOS. I think there are some MI specific scholarships, too, but I’m not as familiar with them. S17 got his scholarship letter ~1.5 weeks ago, and he was accepted in early Nov.

@MSU88CHEng I’m in-state and I am aware of the MI-specific scholarships you referenced, Most of these are not solely merit based though. They’re things such as “Awarded to students from _______ county” or “Awarded to high-achieving students graduating from _____ high school in Grand Rapids, MI.” I think the only solely merit based based scholarship that they advertise is the Professorial $5k one.
I knew not to hope for any of those scholarships. Instead, I was wondering if MSU gave out small unadvertised scholarships saying “Upon review of your application, you have been given a $2k per year scholarship based on your academic achievements” or some unexpected scholarship like that

I was wondering if anyone could estimate my chances for honors college admission. UW gpa is 3.5 at a top ranked highschool in the country. All honors and APs since freshman year, but my school does not weigh GPA. 32 on ACT and have lots of ECs, community service, and leadership. Also OOS. Was accepted 2 weeks ago, about a week after they received my documents. Thank you to anyone who can help!

Also, my highschool does not rank its students
