For me Computer Science and Math

Columbia ED all the way!!

Just hoping for the best. I wish everyone the best of luck!

I’m for sure applying, but I live all the way in California and have been unable to visit the campus, so unless I can visit before November I probably will have to apply regular decision. The thought of being committed to going there before actually visiting is just too scary to me.

can you guys post some of your stats?

im on the ED flow…swag

on a more serious note: who else is starting to stress about applying?

i’m terrified!!! jayskye, here are some of my basic numbers for you…
gpa: 3.86 uw, 4.55 w
rank: top 6-7%
ACT: 35 (36r, 36e, 34m, 34s, 11w)
SAT IIs: 770 USH, 790 Lit
APs: 5’s on USH, Lang/Comp, US Gov

wow those are prettty impressive. but thanks (:
i’m leaning towards EDing to columbia… but im afraid that i’ll be waiting a ED on a school that would probably reject me :(

I wouldn’t risk ED here + EA UChicago.
…just to be on the super safe side. EA schools usually want you to respect other schools’ policies and I don’t remember Columbia ED letting you apply to other schools early besides state schools.

[Early Decision | Columbia Undergraduate Admissions](Early Decision | Columbia Undergraduate Admissions)

from the above page:

“While Columbia does not necessarily encourage the filing of both Early Decision (binding) and Early Action (non-binding) applications, we do not prohibit candidates from doing so. However, candidates should be aware that Columbia’s Early Decision program is a binding agreement and a candidate will be expected to enroll, regardless of any pending applications (early or otherwise).”

Columbia ED 2017!!!
somewhat stressed, but not very because I’m being recruited for track
basic stats:
SAT 2270
AP Biology, English Lang, Psych, Euro, APUSH, and Calc AB all 5s
SATII Math II 800, History 760, Bio M. 750
4.0 UW 7/349
Live Columbia so hoping all the cards line up!!! Best of luck to everyone and hope to see you all in NYC!

Also applying early action to UChicago, regular to Princeton, Brown, UPenn, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, NYU, and Wellesley.

Hi lauren44 any tips on a good sat lit score? I took one in June and only got 720… Also great to hear that you are also applying ED Columbia and EA UChicago! Best of luck to you!

Rococobespierre, 720 is a great score! Unfortunately I won’t be of much help in terms of preparing for the Lit test because I didn’t do any prep at all. I’d compare it, though, to the multiple choice section of the AP Lang exam as far as difficulty goes. Maybe try and get your hands on some old Lang exams if you can’t get any sample Lit ones!

Skeptical of ED due to financial constraints but if I do ED it will be to either Columbia or Brown. Other schools: Penn, Yale, Amherst, Wesleyan, Vanderbilt, UChicago and safeties are Bentley and Villanova.

ealdi94: I would go ahead and do ED if finances are your only concern. The aid packages for ED seem to be just as generous as those for RD, and if it doesn’t work out, you can always decline based on financial aid. (Also if your 2011 income was greater than your 2012 income expect a boost in aid when you submit 2012 documents - this is what happened to me.) The only advantage to RD, assuming you have your heart set on an ED school, is potential for admittance to certain programs that are designed to up the yield rate of students and might include perks you’d be interested in (ie scholars programs). But you have to weigh that against the ability to know your decision three to four months ahead…

@neiro6 I know ED financial aid is essentially the same as RD, but my wariness comes from not being able to see financial aid offers from other potential schools which I would be able to view and weigh if I did RD. Also, can you decline an acceptance based on finances if you COULD potentially pay it (narrowly)? Or can you only decline if paying the cost is absolutely out of the question?

@ealdi94 If you really want to play the numbers game, you can apply to ED school + non restrictive EA + state school and compare those offers. Columbia will allow that. Also I imagine if you have any semi-substantiated reason for not being able to pay they will let you out. It’d be pretty crappy of them not to… imagine the PR nightmare that would be “Ivy League School With Boatloads of Money Traps 17-Year-Old in Debt Forever” haha. Also since the FA estimate you get with the ED decision is not final, you can submit documents or competing need-based offers to see if you can get an adjustment before you make your deposit… or even after.

@neiro6 Alright thanks for the information, very helpful.

Already? Whatever…
Applying ED to Columbia, EA to Michigan (in-state), and RD to Yale.

So I just visited the campus, and I absolutely love it. My parents have given me the okay to go ED. Now I just need to go take the SAT again. As well as the SAT II’s. Joy!
