I just got notified as well and the deadline for deposit is late april, does anyone know if Columbia does expedited decisions?
Couldn’t hurt to call and ask, @disoriented128 .
@disoriented128 I’m pretty sure they don’t, but it indeed doesn’t hurt to ask. If they say they don’t you can just go ahead and pay the deposit. If you get into Columbia, you can unenroll yourself from Vandy (I guess you’d choose Columbia over Vandy since you’re asking this question), but you won’t get the deposit back.
@transferringbud are you allowed to pay the deposit and then unenroll? (from what I’ve read you’re not supposed to double enroll?)
@disoriented128 It’s my understanding that a deposit simply holds your spot. I don’t think that counts as actually enrolling.
Hey guys! Columbia is my dream school, I applied last year and I got rejected. I was hoping someone might be able to tell me if I have a chance?
Stats:
College: Emerson College
High School: #1 Public high school in the country at the time (magnet school for math, science and tech)
High School GPA: 4.0 W (my high school doesn’t show unweighted)
SATs: 2360 (R 800 W 790 M 770)
SAT IIs: Math II 770 US History 800 Lit 800
College GPA: 4.0
Mid-term GPA: 4.0
Extracurriculars: President of a Literary Magazine, copyeditor for another, graphic designer for a club for women in film, writer for a satirical newspaper/blog, member of a screenwriting club
Strengths: SATs/SAT IIs, professor recs (I think), college grades, maybe extracurriculars? Idk, reason for transferring
Weaknesses: definitely high school grades (I’m a humanities person who was stuck at an advanced tech school-- terrible fit; but still, not good), intro courses, my advisor rec isn’t getting in until this friday and it’s probably going to be very basic
@jaygoodiez I don’t think I have any knowledge/experience to chance you… But I am curious about what your reasons for transferring are. You didn’t specify areas of study, but is there a particular major you’re interested in? I applied for the Creative Writing major! ^^
@jellymuffin i’m applying for political science. i’m currently a writing major, and the major switch is my major reason-- which has a whole long story behind it
@disoriented128 As Jiggly poof said, paying deposit simply is holding your spot I’ve heard of no school that doesn’t allow student to hold a spot by paying deposit and give it up. Actually, that’s almost pseudo-official way students manage situations like yours.
When did Columbia release transfer decisions last year?
@llmercll On last year’s thread it got pushed back from May 9th to May 13th.
I received this email today, has anyone else? Is this a bad sign?
Thank you for your transfer application to Columbia College. As I hope you have come to know, Columbia College is the university’s residential liberal arts college. Typically, students enter Columbia College either directly from secondary school or with no more than one year’s interruption in their studies between high school and college.
Upon review of the information you provided, it appears that you may be a more appropriate candidate for admission to the Columbia University School of General Studies (telephone 212-854-2772). The School of General Studies is the undergraduate college created specifically for students with nontraditional backgrounds who, after a break of a year or more in their educational paths, are now seeking a rigorous, traditional, Ivy League education. In order to be eligible for the School of General Studies, applicants typically must:
- have had a break of more than a full year in their education after high school
-or
- have a compelling reason, personal or professional, to attend part time.
All undergraduates at Columbia University, whether in Columbia College or in the School of General Studies, are taught by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and have access to a rich variety of academic offerings and majors. Students enrolled in the School of General Studies are served by a dedicated advising office, and are eligible to apply for financial aid and university apartment housing through the School of General Studies. Please contact the School of General Studies Director of Admissions, Matthew Rotstein, via e-mail at mr2185@columbia.edu to speak with a General Studies Admissions Officer and to learn more about these and other student services.
If you agree that the School of General Studies is more appropriate for your educational interests, we will forward to their admissions office the materials you originally submitted to Columbia College. Understand that you will need to contact the School of General Studies to confirm the forwarding of your application from our office and to inquire if additional materials are necessary to complete their application.
Please respond no later than Friday, April 24, 2015 via e-mail to Arthur Lewis, Senior Assistant Director of Operations, at al436@columbia.edu to inform our office that you wish to have your file forwarded to the School of General Studies -OR- that you wish to remain a transfer candidate for Columbia College.
@deltame It sounds like you’re just a nontraditional applicant. I got into GS last spring, but they didn’t even cover half of tuition and I’m dirt poor. Stick with CC is my advice. It’s probably easier to get into GS, but if you can’t afford it, what good does that do you?
Unless you’re not applying for aid. In which case, go with GS. Your chances would probably be better there if money is not a factor.
I just found this thread! Haha. @deltame and @jigglypoof I have had many friends go to GS, and it is way easier to get into. They just changed the transfer aid this year to meet full need, so you might want to contact GS and see if they are also meeting full need. Like @Jigglypoof said if you don’t care about aid you should definitely apply through GS.
Hi everyone! I am applying to Columbia Engineering under Biomedical Engineering. My GPA is a measly 3.5 so I doubt I will get in, but good luck to all of you!
good luck everyone
Anyone have the word on when we will definitely be hearing back?
My friend just got accepted!!!
@caicon Did they get a phone call? Columbia usually releases all decisions at the same time.
@20transfer17 Nope! She got an email telling her to check her application portal, but she’s GS so it could be different
