Does anyone know whether i can write my optional essay for in list format, as it asks for an essay on additional information? Does it really have to be in a typical essay format?

how do I send in my Commonapp ED agreement? do I send it alone in an envelope or with anything else in the envelope? to the admissions office of the college right?

thanks

I took a summer course at the local university. The Common App says "to have your transcript sent as soon as possible". This might be so dumb, but do I have the transcript sent to me, my school, or each of the schools I am applying to. My parents are so tired of paying to send stuff to each school. I hope this is not the case.

I am thinking of applying early somewhere and I will take the SAT for the first time this October, as well as two more SAT IIs in November. I won't know the scores when I apply early, so I can't write them in the Common Application. Since once you submit the Common Application at a school, it's closed forever, and I will know the test results until regular submission, how can I let the schools know my new results? Will it be OK to leave the spaces blank and let them rely only on the Collegeboard score reports?

Angelutza: Yes, leave it blank. They will figure it out, and look at your report. You can also email the CA people and ask them to modify your app if something significant happens after it is locked. Everyone should use this option, thus helping the CA people see the error of their way :-)

Blockbuster: Since no one has answered your question, I will give it a try. I think you can do as you please on that section, but you run a risk by deviating from the norm. What your planning may be creative and original, or it may look like the work of a person who simply cannot construct a paragraph. I know this is no answer, but I hope it helps.

what about my question?

do i just send in the ED agreement alone in an envelope to the admissions office?

Should I include information like volunteer work if it occured before high school?

what type of thing could I put in my college application that would guarantee to catch the readers attention? (in a good way)

jyi - you could email the schools and ask. OTOH, I dont think the adcoms spend a lot of time worrying if you followed all the convoluted procedures.

Casey - no. they really only want high school experiences. If the only volunteering you did was in middle school, then it just looks like you are padding. If you continued to volunteer, then you do not need that experience.

thank you!

I third safteymom's question about how to list a full year 1-credit course between the two semester columns. (Sorry if it was finally answered-I looked but couldn't find anything)

Also, does anyone include their gym classes in the list?

Anotherparent, Thank you! I will try it out.

Where do you put your college major choices in the printed version of Common App? I know you can enter these under Future plans in online version of Common App.

For the main essay it says a 250 word minimum...so does that mean there is technically no word limit? mine is 750...

same...mine is around 750. I figure if it's interesting it won't be a hassle to read. However, I plan to cut mine down to at least 700 before I decide to load it up on Common App.

Can we allow our teachers and counselor to submit their recommendations and secondary school report online through the Common Application?

What does academic honors mean? Do I put Science National Honors Society member here? What about winner of a physics competition?

Or do I put these under extracurricular activities or both?

Yeah, I would put those under academic honors. Any awards or clubs that you have to apply to get or get into.

I wouldn't put those under extracurricular activities. You're not actively doing anything.

I have a question though.

My parents are getting a divorce, but my mom tells me even though they filed for one in May, it's not going to be completed until next year... So do I put "married", "separated", or "divorced"?

Not only for recommendations, but mid-year and final-year reports, do I have to print the copy of the sheets and bring it to my counselor? I think this Common App, although it's a very convenient application process, contains a little bit of unnecessary stuff we have to take care of.

As mentioned above, I'm just curious as to the length of the main Common App essay. It only says 250 words minimum...and there is NO posted maximum. My essay I want to submit is about 1,100 words. My guidance counselor told me this wasn't a problem.

But on here, I see people saying that like there's a 750 word max. Is this an unspoken rule or posted anywhere? Am I trouble if I submit a 1,100 word essay?? It's about a page and a half single spaced on Word, so I didn't think that was overdoing it. It's definitely not rambling and I've gotten REALLY good feedback for it so far. Even my notoriously difficult AP English teacher enjoyed it, so I really hope it's good! (Honestly, the essay itself is about 150 words shorter, but I repeated my first paragraph at the end for stylistic purposes...which is a necessary important part of the essay.)
