OFFICIAL Common Application Questions Thread

Last year, the CA capped the essay at 500 words. This year they removed the cap, but I heard you should keep it closer to 500. That being said, it really doesnt take that much longer to read a 1100 word essay, just make sure each word is truly necessary.

I would lose the last paragraph.

will anyone pppppllllllllllease answer my question? it's really easy
do i put my sport under "varsity" sports if i was only on varsity for one year?
or "non-varsity'"? Cuz i dont have room to make to two lines...

does anyone know how to format the essay?! should it be double spaced.... should it be titled? should your name be at the top.... like for example.... my colllege essay by mary jones.......... idk im confusing myself

the essays are supposed to be only 500 words.... or so says the college board.

Yeah I think 750 might be too much. Anything under 600 should be fine though.

750 is fine. keep it under 1000 though. 500 was the max for last year i think

This might be a really stupid question but im from Canada & i dont think im doing anything right with this application deal

uhm i hosted a TV show and i want to send the universities a sample. So i got copies of a really good episode. Do i jsut send it in with m y application? Is this the Art supplement? annd if i send it in, do i have to explain waht it is?

Thanks guys

I have a question. I submitted my Common App online for ED at a college. So obviously, it is now locked and I can't change it if I wanted to apply RD to any other schools online. However, if I wanted to change my application or update it for RD, can I send in paper applications to those colleges? Will that be fine?

yeah, paper is fine. but if you only have a couple of changes, you can try contacting customer service and they will probably change it for you. they claimed that they would do their best to accommodate reasonable changes.

Michelle! hey, just write your essay about it. Some schools, like Emory, promise to look at every single thing you send in , while some, like U California, just throw any extra junk away. It'll definitely help you stand out though. I'm assuming its a cd and easily copied.

i think if you take SAT twice it's better. Like you could put the highest score between the two of them but if you have both SAT scores bad you will lose
most of your school grades

Where should I put Boys State on the Common App? Under EC's, or Academic Honors?

We are unsure where to put the 3 week (not officially graded per se) TIP/CTY programs. Do those go under "extracurricular, personal and volunteer (including summer)" section or the "List all other secondary schools, including summer schools as well as summer and other programs you have attended" sections. Help. please?

It goes in extra curricular. also check if your school has supplements. Several schools have a specific place to put summer activities - a section the common app desperately needs.

Thanks, anotherparent. So what is an example of what would go inthe "secondary school, summer schools, summer programs beginning with 9th grade" section????

I beleive it means an actually summer school, where credit is given by that institution.

Remember- when you go to CTY, the school you are going to (unless you go to JHU) has nothing to do with the class you are taking. My dd goes to LMU for CTY, yet all LMU is doing is providing the facility.

It is all very unclear. We tried to put my son's summer programs in it (CTY and Mathcamp) and it just didnt work. OTOH, the form is unclear enough, you could probably do what you want. I dont think these basic procedural grey areas are going to make you look bad if you choose a different way of showing your info.

im sure my question has been answered somewhere already, but if i am adding a resume, do i just write "see attached" in the extracurricular, work experience etc. boxes

my short essay is 350 words. but i still have over 1000 characters left to write...help? it's already way over 150.

Hey, for the extracurricular activities section, is it advisable to use abbreviations for all names of competitions - and then explain them in the 'additional info' section by attaching a resume?

Thinking of ways to squeeze in more things in those 7 rows!

when do you send your SAT scores? do you just add colleges to your list of recipients even if you have not applied their yet?

basically, you can send your scores to a college that has no file on you yet and no application materials from you? and then they'll save your scores and just wait for you to send in other materials?

i want to send my scores for ea...it's getting late i know...but the colleges don't even know i'm applying their so i'm confused if they'll keep a record of the scores
