Official Cornell Transfer 2011

Fri3nds04: do you think getting C in computer programming would affect your decision?

Depending on your major, and what kind of class it is. In general though, everything affects the decision (just how much, we don’t know).

Friends04: C++ programming, well it was my first time taking programming and even seeing it . I am applying for mechanical engineering department. Do you know how many students apply for mechanical engineering major.

There used to be statistics on that, but somehow I can’t find it anymore. Look in this forum, you might find it.

If what you took was intro to programming, I think it will be okay considering you would probably have to take Intro to Matlab if you haven’t already.

@fri2nds04: Do you know if the admission of Operation research and Engineering (ORE) is impacted comparing with other engineering major like EE and ME. I applied from purdue, current major is honor EE and 3.83GPA. But I try to switch major after my summer internship at Accenture and 1 year Co-Op work experience and some other research experience. They totally changed my career goals. Thanks

Those who are in good academic and disciplinary standing are guaranteed admission for some of the majors in CALS. Does this mean if I follow the transfer agreements that I’ll get in CALS? I’m an animal science major by the way. I will have all the prereqs after this semester and I have never gotten below a B in anything (don’t intend to). If I get straight A’s this semester like I did last semester I will raise my GPA to an 3.9. Essays are important of course and I’m working on it a lot. I made ten drafts xD

Lavender19: Me too, my essay have been reviewed by 10 people  -you think C in computer programming can hurts me… this was my first time taking programming… so i struggle a lot… however, I am taking part 2… I am intend to do better :)

Again, they used to have this statistics on how many transfer applicants applied and how they are distributed for different majors. Unfortunately, I can’t find the link anymore, if you could find it, it’d be very helpful just to see the statistics.
IMHO though, I’d think transferring in as ORIE would be easier than ECE or MechE. However, considering how you are switching major, they would seriously be interested in why you are changing your major, how you are trying to and will catch up, and possibly how you are doing in ORIE classes that you are taking (I hope).
Good luck!!

Unfortunately, I’m not an expert in CALS, but i’ve heard of guaranteed transfer. However, it’s only for certain students from certain schools. If you are really curious, call CALS admission, and ask the person + reference it with the webpage (or the source) where you get the information from.

Do you of think is worthy taking english when transferring?

I believe so. If you are going to take more English classes when you are here, you are more than welcomed to do so.

fri3nds04: Thanks, is mechanical engineering hard to get in as transfer student.

john1234567: Well, I’m not fri3nds04, but to answer your question…
CoE accepts <10% of applicants, which was 42 students last year, and 22 year before…but since I don’t have the data by major I don’t know how that number would break down; nevertheless, looking at that number, we can assume…umm…nothing :[
despite generally greater number of mech-e’s, with this small of a number (i don’t really know but imo it seems quite small…), I guess it simply depends on the pool.

sorry, i couldn’t give you a definite answer…but i hope this somewhat gives you the idea…

I agree with IlPagliaccio, best thing to do is try your best, and see whether Cornell is the right fit for you.

Thank you guys. I have spend a lot of time with the supplement essay. I am currently enrolled in New York college of technology. My first semester was not as good as i hoped for. My GPA is 3.360, My C++ program course messed me up… well it was my very first doing and seeing c++… I am taking c++ part 2… i know this semester my GPA will go up to 4.0. I am currently taking cal 3, differential equations, c++ part 2, english 2, physics 2.
i also did researched during my fall semester in particle physics and I am planning to continue as well…
do you think classes and my research will get me in cornell engineering…i also have a good recommendations.

Hey guys, did you complete the mid term report yet ?

Carotene: I just started my spring semester, application is due march 1. By the way what college you applying to.

@carotene: are you in quarter system? just wondering

@john I’m applying to Cornell and Brown, but they’re both reaches. I’m alright at staying at my current college and I just thought I’d try these “high reaches” since my GPA is kinda low.

@fri3nds04 I’m not, i’m in a 2 semester system …

@carotene you should go for it. what college you applying for. Do you getting C in c++ will affect me …
