smileygerl - if you search the threads on this Cornell forum you may find additional info on past summer sessions - it is a real boost to your student to attend as they acclimate to living at a college campus and get college credits .

Memphismom,

I did not realize that he would get college credit for attending. I was concerned because of the loss of income as he would not be able to work during the summer. Unfortunately money is an issue for us. Thank you for the information. I will search the boards…

are you admitted under H.O.P.E program? If you are, then you are required to attend summer college

No H.O.P.E program. The offer of admission is conditional on required attendance of prefresman summer program.

smiley, don’t worry about it. he’s in. as for money, it’s an issue for most everyone, rich or poor or in-between. if he has to do the summer classes, then he does it and gets credit. not a big deal. I’ve heard of some athletes being required to take summer classes. Still, it’s not a big deal. with work, a lot of students do at every college in the country and there are probably plenty of part time jobs also off campus in Ithaca even if he can’t do his usual job this summer. my dad worked 3 jobs and about 50 hours a week from his freshman year to put himself through college. Just tell your son to make some calls. It is nice for parents to try and get involved and help, but I think it might be best for him to take care of issues like work and summer classes by himself instead of a parent trying to figure it out on cc, which is not the greatest place for some kinds of information. just my opinion. good luck and I’m sure it will all work out. Go big Red!!!

iceyman,

Thanks-
I will try to relax. I am sure all will work out.

My cornell essay was about an animal activism group that I created when I was a freshman. It promoted awareness against the Canadian Seal Slaughter. It had a lot of imagery and it was very personal.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I had 3, actually. One from my chemistry and Designing Concepts teacher, in which she talked about how she tought i was an “elite” student and also an artist and what not… She’s an artist so it was very creative and not boring. Another was from my bio, AP bio, zoology, and conservation lab teacher (yeah… i had a lot of this teacher!) and it was really good, he was very very specific and it sounded very genuine… And my favorite one was from my Philosophy and AP Literature teacher and it was just amazing. I loved it.
[] Counselor Rec: It was pretty good. Nice and short, not generic, not boring.
[] Additional Rec: I had too many as is, haha

Job/Work Experience: summer job
Volunteer/Community service: volunteer at local hospital, religious community, soup kitchen, etc. Had over like 500 hours of volunteer work.

Essays: AMAZING:) i definitely think this is what really worked for me and made them see past my not-so-great SAT score. lol.
Teacher Recommendation: one was good but the usual, basic stuff. the other was INCREDIBLE. getting a reccomendation from that teacher was one of the best things i did lol…
Counselor Rec: nothing special at all. he wrote recs for like 100 students…seems like he wrote it in 3 minutes. didn’t even spell my name right
Additional Rec: great rec from boss and great rec from mentor at internship…they say only send 2 teacher recs, but extra recs really do make a difference and tell them more about you. i sent 1 counselor, 2 teacher, and 2 extra, for a total of 5 recs. don’t be scared to. but i wouldn’t advise any more than that…i was really pushing it with 5 lol.
Interview: didn’t have one

State (if domestic applicant): Maryland
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public
Ethnicity: south Asian

Reflection
Strengths: ESSAYS and recomendation letters, great leadership in school activities, and lots of extracirriculars (both related to my major and just volunteer work in my community!)
Weaknesses: SAT score DEFINITELY was not as good as other applicants.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: i’ve done A LOT of volunteer work in my community and showed passion for it in essays. essays showed perfect fit with the college…and showed how much i wanted to go there.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: cancelled all other applications…:D

General Comments: SOO FREAKIN EXCITEDD!!! cornell was my top choice and i was soo surprised i got in:) while applying, i felt like my SAT score and my subject test scores were NOTHING compared to scores other applicants would have, and i am sure my scores ARE much lower than some other applicants scores. but i really put my heart into my essays…i talked about something personal i was passionate about and showed my love for cornell in my supplement (for which i did a lot of research about cornell). my advice is WRITE A UNIQUE ESSAY! something that makes you stand out! and write about whatever is important to you as a person, what you want to tell them, NOT what they want to hear. i don’t mean to write like 5 pages here but my story into the ivy league (lol) is very atypical, 2010 especially was FULL of struggles but i had this dream in mind and kept faith in God and thanks to Him it all worked out:) i don’t mean to make this religious here…but never lose hope in God because He knows whats best for us and wow this is a miracle…still can’t believe it. can’t wait for Cornell Days!!!
all those rejected/deferred, BEST OF LUCK!!! just remember everything will work out and i hope everyone is happy wherever they choose to go:)
to those accepted, CONGRATULATIONS and see ya’ll in Ithaca!!! :D

^I’m applying to CAS at Cornell this year (RD)! I really hope I get in, but I’m international, so we’ll see how that goes.
