Reflection

Strengths: I had clearly demonstrated that in my mind it was CMC or nothing; I had tons of leadership roles and incredibly strong profile (academically and the like) I was, and forgive my pretentiousness, as good of a candidate as I could possibly be to be entirely honest
Weaknesses: I wasn’t a minority; I came from a school with 2 CMC athlete commits and 2 more people applying ED; I don’t really know what else
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: See weakness
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Don’t know yet

General Comments: 25 years from now, when I’m some congressman, or senator, or even President if that somehow happens, and CMC asks me to speak at the Athenaeum, I’ll laugh and say hell no.

Decision: Rejected

Reflection

Strengths: ACT, extracurrics, leadership
Weaknesses: GPA?
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I didn’t really focus my app towards government or business which is kind of what they were looking for. Oh well, off to bigger and better things!

I know my reccomendations were really strong. I knew all of my teachers very well, and specifically picked teachers that i felt knew me the best and had witnessed my growth throughout high school.

Country (if international applicant):

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM & low income

Reflection

Strengths: recommendations, essays
Weaknesses: extracurriculars (not terrible but not amazing like most applicants i have seen), act below cmc average
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I took the most rigourous courses available to me, made strong connections with my teachers, had a unique and meaningful personal statement

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2310 superscored (760 CR, 790 M, 760 W)

ACT (breakdown): N/A

SAT II: Math II 800

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.4 (school doesn’t do GPAs since I go to a highly competitive NYC private school)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A

AP (place score in parenthesis): Statistics (4), Literature (4) Note: school only offers AP classes in math/languages, so it’s rare to have a lot of AP exams

IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A

Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus BC, AP Economics, Advanced Physics, Mandarin IV, DNA Science, Asian Literature

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nothing as big as USAMO/Intel, but qualified for the AIME

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

  • Competitive Pokemon Video Game player (yep, this is a thing): definitely the biggest part of my application. Been competing since I was 10, made it to the American team for the World Championships five times, won three Regional titles/two National titles. Spent the last year helping the community grow through writing articles/making YouTube videos.
  • Math club/team (president) 9-12
  • School math tutoring organization (president) 9-12
  • Varsity cross country/track 9-12

Job/Work Experience:

  • Internship with JP Morgan this summer, investment banking
  • Internship at a health center for teenagers in 10th grade
  • Internship at a non-profit education program in 9th grade
  • YouTube (I have around 16k subscribers and 1+ mil views on videos)

Volunteer/Community service:

  • Chinatown Literacy Project 10-12 (leader 12), weekend program dedicated towards teaching immigrants English. As a leader I’m responsible for recruiting tutors (high school kids) and students. I also hold weekly discussions with our tutors on issues such as racism, gentrification, sexism, current events, etc. Really proud to be a part of this program and a leader.

Summer Activities:

  • All the internships I had over the summer, basically.
  • Also was a student at Google’s NYC office one summer for a program called CAPE.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

  • Common App: I was really proud of this one, despite rewriting the entire thing two days before applications were due. Talked about my involvement with competitive Pokemon the last few years, from competing to helping the community grow and having an impact on thousands worldwide. Started with a anecdote about meeting a fan on the train once, and went from there.
  • Supplement: Also felt good with this one. Talked about my visit to CMC and how I really fit into their “learning through experience” model. Felt like it was really specific towards CMC.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

  • Teacher Rec #1: Asked from my 11th grade Pre-Calc teacher whom I absolutely loved. One of the coolest teachers I’ve ever had. He knew me outside of the classroom really well.
  • Teacher Rec #2: Asked from my 12th grade Advanced Physics teacher who’s been an excellent teacher and is awesome. He also taught me in 10th grade.
  • Counselor Rec: Have one of the best college counselor’s in the country, I’m confident it was really strong.
Additional Rec: Didn’t have one, though I was tempted to ask my JP Morgan supervisor for one since we had a great relationship.
  • Interview: Went really, really well. Compared to other college interviews I had, it was much more of a conversation rather than question after question. She was an alum who just graduated and was working in finance, and it just flowed well.

Other:

  • Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
  • Intended Major: Business, Economics
  • State (if domestic applicant): New York
  • Country (if international applicant): USA
  • School Type: Private
  • Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)
  • Gender: Male
  • Income Bracket: Low
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation college

Reflection:

Strengths:

  • Extra-curriculars for sure. Even though there were a lot, they weren’t just “filler” activities. I really cared about each one, and held leadership positions in ones I was really passionate about. I’m sure interning at JPM helped with a potential interest in finance. The Pokemon thing was probably the most significant part of my application.

Weaknesses:

  • GPA. I go to a very competitive NYC private school, but it doesn’t excuse a lower GPA. Had a fair amount of B-range grades through the three years, and even two C+s in Latin/History in 10th grade! Definitely the weakest part of my application. I get the impression that they were more lenient on the lower grades since they were in subjects that aren’t that relevant towards what I want to study.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:

  • I really think I fit well with CMC, and I’m super grateful for their holistic process. I think I made it clear through my application that I really care about helping others, being a leader, and doing big things for the communities I am a part of. I’m sure the “hook” of being a competitive video game player helped, though I worked hard to portray that I’m not someone who just likes playing video games.
  • Got the chance to visit CMC this fall and by coincidence, the guy who gave my info session was also the one who read my application. He came to my school two weeks later and I got to talk to him more - super nice and cool guy.
  • Sent in a supplement video despite having an interview, which I really liked. Took some pictures/clips from ECs to portray them outside of just paper.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:

  • Didn’t apply anywhere else that’s notified me, but my list was something like UCLA/UC Berkley/USC/Harvey Mudd/Cornell/Columbia/NYU Stern/Boston College/Lehigh/Villanova/RPI.

General Comments:
I definitely felt the pressure to apply to an Ivy at first, given how many of my friends did and the fact that over 40% of kids here get into one. After visting CMC in the fall though, I just fell in love with it, it spoke to me in every regard. Spent a fair amount of time stressing over my application, got to meet the admissions rep who read my application, had a awesome interview and I really appreciated the inclusion of a video supplement. Very excited to attend next year!

Hope this can be of use to other potential applicants.

@Kaigo00‌

How did you get so many internships? Especially at Goldman?

Just lucky that I live in NYC, actively looked for them and my school helped me out too. The JPM one was through a program I’m part of, they have good connections and get a couple of HS interns every year to work there.

@Kaigo00‌

Were there any qualifications beyond the average high school student that helped you get them?

Coming from a prestigious school helped a lot, and I’m a pretty solid interviewer which definitely made things easier since I had to interview for most of them.

@Kaigo00‌
Thanks for the responses! I’m so envious of your being able to get an internship at Morgan.

CMCer from the class of 2018 here,

Congratulations to all of those who were accepted! You’ve truly set yourselves up for an amazing college experience.

Please don’t hesitate to message me if you have any questions about CMC!

Accepted!

SAT I: 2320 (Reading: 770, Math: 800, Writing: 750 - But I didn’t even submit this b/c I took it for National Merit and didn’t get the results. Plus, I didn’t care.)**
ACT**: 36 (English: 35 Math: 36 Science: 36 Reading: 35)
SAT II: I think I submitted 2? Math II: 800, AP U.S: 750 or something. I forget. I don’t think these matter much.
Unweighted GPA out of 4: 3.97
Rank in percent: top 2%
AP: Would take more effort than I want to give. I got like 5 5s and a 4 in AP U.S.
IB: MURICA. Kidding. But no IB
Senior Year Course Load: Gym, AP Physics C, Computer Science Topics H (after AP Comp Sci), AP Psych, AP Spanish Lang, AP Micro/Macroeconomics, AP English Lit&Comp. No math this year b/c I took multivariable calc honors last year and AP Calc BC two yrs ago
Major Awards: National Merit? NHS?

Extracurriculars: Four years of mock trial (captain this year) - we’ve gotten 9th and 5th nationally and 2nd in state last year, Three years of Model UN (Treasurer last year, President this year) - I’ve won two Outstanding delegate awards, Four years of Church Youth Group (student leader last year), Competitive Cycling for three years, about 12 hrs per week from March to September-December. Plus a bunch of smaller clubs that don’t take up much time + personal photography and photography for school newspaper and yearbook.
Job/Work experience: I worked at a bike shop part-time (20 hrs) over the summer. Tutoring experience.
Volunteer/Community service: Hella week. Probably an hour or two each month all high school.
Summer Activities: Nothing of note. I went to Europe over the summer, that was fun.
Essays: I thought they were good. Everyone always says “Oh I had fantastic essays!” anyways, I don’t know how unbiased people really are. I feel like I’m generally a better writer than most of my peers although about on par with the type of person I’d expect to apply to CMC. For the Why CMC? question, I knew CMC was my first choice, so it was easy to do. I’m a firm believer in not just “BSing” your essays. If you’re not genuine, I think it’s easy to see.
Recommendations: Same as essays, everyone always says they’re really good. Although I think both mine were really good, too. I had both my teachers for two years and one teacher I had really struggled in his class (pulled out all As but it was hard, spent a lot of time together, etc). The other I just really liked her and she liked me and it was really nice of her to write the letter; she retired and only wrote letters for 3 or 4 people.

Teacher Rec 1: English; English 2h (2xAs) and AP Lang (2xAs); Soph/Jr year
Teacher Rec 2: Math; AP Calc BC (2xAs) and Math Topics H/Multivariable Calc (2xAs); Soph/Jr year
Counselor Rec: Throughout high school, I’ve made a point to see her at least once a semester. I highly recommend doing that. Like seriously, it’s the least you can do. Anyways, I figure it was good. She seems to like me, unless she’s actually really, really good at being passive aggressive.
Additional Rec: I’ve shown a ton of leadership in Model UN, so I got him to write a rec. That meant a lot to me, good guy that sponsor.
Interview: On-campus in September. Good stuff. Was fun, although weird b/c the guy watching (a student who was being trained) was soooo bored but perked up when I mentioned Model UN b/c he did Model UN @ CMC. Was so damn hot that day, though, I wore a suit in like 110 degree weather.

Applied for financial aid? No.
Intended Major: I put international relations. I like the PPE program.
State: Illinois
Country: The US of A.
School Type: Top-100 nationally Newsweek public school (private and national included). B/c those rankings are soooo consistent and meaningful.
Ethnicity: Asian. Did you know there are less Asians than Hispanics at CMC? Crazy. Although it is Southern California, I guess.
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Highest
Hooks: I know how to fish? No, but seriously, I think my cycling was a hook. Like seriously, how many kids do you know who dress up in tight shorts, sit on a bike for 40+ miles per day, and hang out with older men every Saturday and morning of the summer? Not many. I race, I don’t know anyone else who does.

Strengths: Academics. Testing. Cycling. Extracurriculars. Essays and Recs? Interview (going in real relaxed helps a lot). Expressed a LOT of interest, stayed in contact with interviewer, etc.
Weaknesses: What’s a hook? Also, no community service, really. I didn’t know I should do summer activities. Also, it’s the summer, what the hell? I didn’t do any missions trips in Africa that I subsequently focused my essays on. No close relative died.
Why I think I was accepted: Academics. Extracurriculars. Essays/Recs. Interview & interest.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: ED1. Just CMC. Thank goodness, too, b/c I would have been screwed if I had been rejected.

General comments: I probably sound like such a douchebag from that post. Sorry. You’ll have to take my word that I’m not, or at least I try not to be.

Anyways, there’s something inherently wrong with all of these threads and all of this speculation and all of these forums. None of us are college admissions counselors at Claremont McKenna/Stanford/Princeton/Harvard/etc. So in the end, it’s just the blind leading the blind. We can all try to look for patterns about if X gets you in or Y gets you in, but we all have stories of how Perfect ACT/GPA/Extracurriculars didn’t get into the State school. So who the hell knows.

Of course, we can draw generalizations. I.e. I’m sure my perfect GPA (one B in Sophomore year) in a max-rigor schedule played a significant part in acceptance, as did my 36 ACT.

If I had to give advice, it’d be this. It’s now December 22nd of my senior year, and I’m talking about my high school experience. I’m an ‘overachiever,’ a lot of people would say. I mean, I’m naturally smart, but I’ve definitely worked super hard for grades/not really the tests/extracurriculars/etc. But still, I’ve done significant damage to my body in high school, just from sleep (I don’t do drugs or drink or other shit like that). And it’s paid off. I got into my dream school that I chose, and that’s awesome. But here’s the point: If I hadn’t enjoyed everything I did in high school, then I wouldn’t be happy right now. It’d be a big, fat waste of four years. I’m happy to say that I enjoyed and enjoy the 15hr/week of mock trial that I do. I thoroughly enjoy Model UN. I feel a sense of fulfillment and pride from my academic achievements and I feel like I’ve greatly benefited from all of my schooling. So there’s that. I know it’s probably too late for a lot of you, and good luck with all of your apps and stuff. Try to be Native American or African American. That’s my advice. Good luck.

That bike will be handy in California! What frame is it?

Hey @xiggi‌! I ride a 2014 Felt AR5 with Shimano 105. Do you ride?

As much as life permits! Felt 75 and Piranello are my weapons of choice.

@gpecheck1‌ Sometimes the admissions officers pick up on your vibes and realize you might not be a good fit for their school. 4 people from your school applying to CMC didn’t prevent you from getting in. Whatever reason that might be. Not trying to pick a fight online, just saying you might want to check your attitude and things might go in your favor in the future.

@gpecheck1 were you Majority Whip in Senate or Assembly? I was a Whig in Senate.

@gpecheck1‌ If you can’t objectively point out your own weaknesses, I’ll try, if it helps at all:

  1. Academics. A 3.75 GPA and 30th percentile in the class. College Niche says 85% of CMC students were in the top 10% of their class. That's pretty telling.
  2. Your personality. I wish you the best of luck, but I, along with @oregonottoman‌, believe that maybe your personality came through in your application somewhere. If you're posting vindictive, arrogant, pretentious comments after being rejected, then it seems like the admissions committee was very discerning.
