Official Fall '07 Transfer Thread =)

ryan, i got in and im OOS.

congrats to all, and congrats to shoebox who has been obsessed with UVa for as long as i have been here haha...

Mojojojo: hahahah obsessed? nah, just passionate for what I want out of life, including my undergrad experience

hey shoebox
im an e-school transfer too. do you know anyone to live with in bice? i was told it's really hard for transfers to get in because we're at the bottom of the list. i do have a friend who needs 2 roommates in an appt. on the same street as bice but the 2 guys are friends of a really good friend, so i don't know them that well but i wouldn't want to move in and live with two guys by myself, but if you're interested let me know, since it would be the same as living in bice basically, and it might even be cheaper. anyway congrats on getting in too!

Any idea on how many wait list spots there would be for transfers?

Hmyhtoday: Nah, I really want to live on campus. I think I know a friend who has an open spot in Lambeth because she was rooming with 5 other girls but then became an RA, soo there's an opening. Go on to www.hoohasit.com and look for openings, I know that there are a ton. Good luck, and keep in touch, since we're both "brand new" e-schoolers

Accepted! To CAS from VCCS (non GT)!!! I'm so excited....

Rejected.

Not upset, just rather surprised and a little confused.

Applied to Arts & Sciences for Econ, as a 2nd year transfer. At the end of this semester:
-Older, independent student putting myself through school on my own
-I have 36 credit hours. 4.0 GPA.
-1340 SAT (from 2001) & 3-something GPA with 7 or 8 AP's from a competitive HS (back when I was a screw up before I enlisted in the military)
-4 years highly-decorated military service and more life experience in my little finger than most HS kids have in their entire bodies.
-In-state.
-Very well-written.
-Great rec from a fantastic English professor (taught at Pepperdine) whom I had in SoCal last semester (as an OOS student for one semester- just to "get away" for a bit).
-Resume/"Extra Curriculars" a mile long...

Any inputs from the admittance-crazed board members here? You guys would know better than I... I was thinking that as a 2nd-year transfer I might have to suffer SLIGHTLY lowered odds, but... I am rather amazed. If I give off an 'entitlement' vibe- believe it. I suffered enough, being rejected from 7 of 10 schools in high school, to know how to play the game this time around... (or so I imagined....) So I did my time, and instead of shooting off to a top-tiered university at 18, I instead spent 4 and one-quarter years grinding out public service. Then I busted hump to pay for my own education (every red cent) these past 2 semesters and pull a 4.0. And still...

I'm at a loss. What's a guy gotta do to prove it's there?

After looking at your stats and seeing that u got rejected, I dont feel bad at all about being wait-listed.

Seriously, this admissions process is ruthless.

Have any spring roll-overs gotten an e-mail yet?

Nick ^ I can't disagree with you, at this point.

I understand that I'm not transferring from an Ivy-caliber institution, and that my HS stats are hardly unbelievable. But my SENIOR year in HS was SIX years ago. I am a far cry from the kid that nabbed a 1340 SAT while he was still really drunk from the football team party the night before (and morning of, really...)

Translation: Bright kid makes many stupid decisions when young, grows up, quits playing around. Still gets rejected.

Bait&Switch- The college admissions process has gotten so out of hand and I am sorry to say you are the poster child. Your age and experience make you a perfect candidate to increase the diversity of the campus, you would bring a great deal to the school. It is all a crap shoot. There is no way to tell what admissions looks for when they review applications. I continue to lose faith in the education system of America.

I got in. I'm having a tough time deciding between UNC and UVA. Any opinions?

Braird
Yes I did... but i tried logging in and it worked!

i am sorry for this dumb question... how can i check the decision?

BigE, are you instate for UVA or UNC?

Bait&Switch- what school are you applying from? You remind me a lot of me. I had some impressive public service stuff under my belt too. I was older like you and I too was rejected my first time around. I kept going and now have about two and a half years of college done which includes some pretty hard classes (math and science). You have about one year’s worth of classes done. For a transfer, that’s not much. I know it sucks to watch all these kids get in but trust me, they have worked hard and deserve it. I think you’re definitely in next year if you manage to keep your gpa up and show you can handle more college classes. Good luck.

BigE: if you're IS, go UVa, definently. The education, for that price, is unbeatable. Plus, you seemed to really want to go when we were PMing. If you're IS for UNC, i'd go for that choice, simply because again, the education for that price is a really good deal. If you're OOS for both, I would go UVa because of the great alumni network, the education, plus the campus life. I'm pro-UVa just because i'm a native Virginian, but if I was from NC, I bet i'd be the same way about UNC.

I was wondering if anyone knew where they are sending acceptance packages. The status page said that they sent them out (I would assume they'll be mailing them tomorrow with the letters) so I was wondering if they'd send them to our campuses or our home address. I emailed an admissions office contact, but I was hoping someone here would maybe know.

I'm oos for both. They both have beautiful campuses (slight edge to UVa), great weather (slight edge to UNC), D1 sports programs (edge to UNC), and top-notch academics. So just a few questions:

It's always been my opinion that UVa academics are more prestigious than UNC academics. I guess I've just taken it as conventional wisdom that however close they are in certain departments, UVa has the definite, if slight, edge in prestige. From your perspectives, is this true?

Similarly, when/if I apply to law school, is there a significant difference between a UVa and UNC degree?

Also, though I am definitely leaning in the direction of UVa, I love that Carolina has an exceptional journalism department/campus newspaper/drama program/ etc. Anyways, I've always really wanted to write screen plays (for films) and am writing two of them this summer. Can anyone comment on any related programs at UVa I might be interested in?

Congratulations shoebox!!!

Bait&Switch -- were you out-of-state? If yes, the process is much more difficult. Also, course selection counts a lot at UVa. -- did you take the courses that UVa wants?

I thought i'd dig this up again, since once again, there are some proud, admitted students out there :)
