Extra: (Essays, etc): My essays got me in, no lie. My first one I briefly described what I wanted out of college and how my current college couldn't fullfill it. Then, I launched into how UVA fit perfectly into my life, from the academics to social/campus life. I used specific examples, as well as broad ideas. In another essays, I talked about how everyone around me sometimes calls me a nerd because I like knowing how things work and I have a ton of random knowledge, and then talked about my desire to work in the space industry and how my engineering degree would help me do that. I also talked about my mom's battle with breast cancer and how I look to her for support when i'm going through my own tough times. My final transfer essay I address the crumminess of being a girl in engineering, but also how i'd overcome it. For the general essay, I did the "invite three people to dinner" and chose Pierre l"Enfant (DC's founder), Wile E Coyote (yes, Roadrunner's nemisis), and my dad, because they're all engineers.
I also wrote a letter that I included with my midterm grades and put a strong emphasis on how much I wanted to attend.

Moral of the story: Dig deep within yourself and find all the reasons why you want to be at UVA, or any school, beyond "oh because it's UVA". I liked the liberal arts side to its engineering, as well as the academic-challenging atmosphere and the Greek life. Find your own reasons, write them all down, and put them in your essay! If you really want to go, and have honest, passionate reasons, and let them show in your essays, the admissions board WILL see that. Show interest, show passion, and show determination. And most of all, good luck :)
