Official FALL 2012 Cornell Transfers

They’ll look at both, they just only require one.

Hey guys, I’m not sure how much help ill be able to get for this question, but i’ll try anyways.
I saw that a lot of you guys are applying to Cornell but as well UPenn, and other schools which are ranked considerably higher than Cornell. How are you justifying choosing Cornell over the higher ranked ones?
and @Something12345, you said you go to UChicago right now, how are you justifying leaving Chicago for Cornell (i applied to both),
thanks

From researching cornell/visiting/talking to people I know who go there, Cornell is very, very different from Chicago. Even though Chicago is ranked higher than Cornell, they’re both fantastic schools and you shouldn’t give too much weight to rankings. I think I definitely picked Chicago based too much off of rankings which was really dumb because it’s not actually a good fit for me. I didn’t address rankings at all in my essays, I just tried to make the differences between the two schools really clear and talk about why Cornell would be a much better fit for me than Chicago has been. If you want to talk about details, PM me. :)

Hey everyone, I am applying for admissions for Fall 2012! And I was wondering if anyone knew if the restructuring going on within CALS would affect transfer admissions for the the Fall 2012 term? I am worried…

How long was your supplement essays? (500-750 words)

639- nice in the middle :)

Mine was like 720.

Also, how specific were your essays?

739 :stuck_out_tongue: I can be kind of verbose. Mine was fairly specific. How specific experiences led me to realize why I wanted to major in Gov’t. And how my academic interests have evolved since I last applied as a senior in high school

im not sure how specific mine goes into cornell, but i tried to express how my background (growing up in german/switzerland) and my time here has led to my interests in government and econ and what programs at cornell could serve those. 600 words wasn’t really enough to really go in depth, but i tried to touch on a lot of different points.

@Gregfields, you don’t have to report your SAT scores for ILR. They’re not nearly as important as essays and the courses you took while in college.

My essays were pretty specific (detailed exact experience that made me choose ILR) though very concise.

The only thing I’m a little concerned about is sending all the forms in on time. I’ve attended 4 different colleges and so need 4 official college reports which may not all be ready by the 1st. Do you guys think it’s okay if one is a little late?

Do you think they will mind if we go over 750? like 770 or something.

Probably not, as long as you make sure your response doesn’t get cut off. They probably know how long 750 words is in general and don’t want to read too much more than that, but if your essay is interesting and a tiny bit over that’s probably fine.

it wont really matter that closely with the essay. with the extracurricular response it will cut you off the letter you get to limit (spaces count as characters). but since its a word document attachment it wont really be visible if you’re a few words over

Do you think it’s okay if our college reports come in late?

I agree a little over the word count is fine.

It shouldn’t be an issue, ilrgirl. As long as you submit your common app and supplement on time, I think it’s okay if things come in a little late. Does delay your decision though.

Anyone having problems getting their materials processed? I sent my transcripts at the beginning of February and submitted my common app and supplement two weeks ago today but they still haven’t processed the transcripts. I send my lor, midterm report and official report about a week ago as well, and they don’t have those yet either. I’m worried!

i sent most of my stuff pretty early so some of my stuff has shown up already. it’s still missing my college report (even though i sent it with my transcript, so maybe they process stuff separately), midterm report (which i just sent), and high school transcript. has any of your stuff arrived?

hey guys, i just emailed Cornell asking about financial aid, but while I’m waiting on the response, since its very close to the deadline, do you guys know the answers??

Does applying for financial aid have any bearing on our admissions decision?
And will turning the financial aid application past the deadline only affect our financial aid prospects, or does the FAFSA have to be received, in order for our application to be reviewed?

Thanks

I have a question.
Cornell’s ILR school wants marco and micro economics. But if I’m taking those classes THE semester I apply, as in - if I’m applying for the Spring, I would take them in the fall. Hence they would be “courses in progress” on my transcript.
Will they count that as taking economics or do I have to have them completed before I even apply?

@Matisyahu I’m pretty sure courses in progress satisfy the prereqs. Plus, you send in your midterm grades for those courses. So, I’m sure that’s a pretty good indication of how you will do in the course.
