I have all my requirement and recommendation done. I know Cals is very strict about the requirements, so it can dramatically damage your chances because simply you didn’t take the requirement. I’m also very anxious for my chance because I have one “C” in the mid year report. I hope other supporting materials possibly cover my weakness.

Just to let you know these are five factors Cals consider for admission.

Appropriateness:

A student’s fit or match with the program that they decide to apply to - CALS admits by program. We feel it is most important to pursue your academic passions first and foremost.

Academic Record:

We are looking for students who have a strong academic record at the college level.

In general, competitive applicants have at least a 3.0 (B) average. Please note, Biological Sciences requires a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Required Coursework:

Applicants should have the CALS required coursework completed or in-progress with a “B” or better at the time an applicant submits an application.

Recommendations:

We emphasize quality not quantity; we require one academic recommendation and the College Officials Report. For transfer admissions, we are flexible and can accept additional recommendations should you feel that they are necessary.

Extracurricular Activities:

Activities outside of the classroom: within or outside of school. We are looking for depth of experiences not quantity of activities.

at my college, we couldnt take a class for microeconomics and macroeconomics as a freshman here so i took intro to economics which covered both topics. I contacted them about it and they said the admission committee doesn’t evaluate courses so like idk what i could personally do about it. i kinda think its unfair if I lose my chances just because I couldnt take the classes as a freshman. do you guys have any tips on what i should do??

@Jk1018, you mentioned all of the required courses should be completed or in progress…Do you know whether it is ok to have one of them (communication in my situation) as planned?

@Kane, there is a course evaluation tool on the Cornell website (maybe CALS specifically), in which you put in descriptions for your course and all relevant info, and then the registrar contacts you back telling you if the course will fulfill the requirement. Try looking around for that.

Well, I kept at her and she finally agreed to change it. I am so relieved. Plus, my app materials have now been sent for evaluation, so let’s hope!

“Applicants should have the CALS required coursework completed or in-progress with a B or better at the time an applicant submits an application.”

I am on the quarter system, so I will take communication only in Spring. Sorry for the confusion.

Anyone know when ILR will let us know of their decisions? Also, it’s been close to three weeks since I sent in materials to the admissions office, and only the first two are checked (i.e. Common App and supplement). Should I call them?

@Ravidrim, you start to hear in the beginning of April from ILR. It’s up to you to call them and ask, maybe wait until next week.

@Stashjuice, you still have time. I haven’t sent in my tax returns and stuff because I don’t have them, but they said I should be fine. You can upload materials on the financial aid website too.

Essays: Common App essays are general, not very strong but decent. Cornell Essay is very strong i think :P, I wrote about why my past ER greatly influenced me to Economics, and I wrote about the great Econ program in Cornell and also the debate society.

The only thing i’m concerned is that I did not submit my SAT score…does it matter a lot?

Oh i forgot to add, im applying from a community college in CA. Also one other thing im concerned is that i still have one prerequisite class, which is math, that i havent completed, taking it in the coming spring quarter. :(

@Wantonly, your stats look good. I don’t think you have to send SATs if you haven’t taken them already. As for your required courses, I think you should let them know you’re planning on taking them in the spring quarter.

I just got an email from Ian Schachner at ILR, and it reads:

“The processing center is still catching up, so your documents may still be waiting to get scanned in. Everything should be in our system by next week. We can’t review files until the midterm grade report has arrived. Decisions typically go out toward the end of March and continue until mid-April.”

Has anyone from ILR had a phone interview? I know they say they kinda stopped doing them, but I saw on last years posts that there were a number of people applying around this time were getting some questions/interviews on their application.
