I was wondering…I am a National Merit Semifinalist and the website made it sound like all semifinalists receive the “Semifinalist Scholarship” based on this quote
“Nominees are freshmen graduating from high school in the top 1% of their class, or semifinalists in the National Merit, National Achievement or Hispanic Recognition competitions who are also in the top 10% of their class. Jesuit Scholarship recipients must also be Jesuit high school graduates.”

…Since I’m a semifinalist and I’m in the top 10% of my class, does anyone know why I only got the Dean’s? Any other semifinalists who didn’t get the scholarship?

Silence; Congrats on getting in. You have really good stats but normally not high enough for a Dean’s Scholarship, which typically requires a 1400 SAT, you have a 1200 something.

Gabelli is a superb school with outstanding opportunities and internships. Its going to be even better in the coming years with the new building being renovated with state of the art classrooms and NYSE type trading room. Moreover, because of Fordham’s unique Jesuit ethos while being in New York City, you can explore social and community service internships to give back to community, go to Beijing on the Global Honors program or another location. Students have studied in New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Europe, China and at the London School of Economics.

Fordham’s core requirements are daunting and will require you to think outside the box, challenge your opinions thoughts and sometimes your own values…while you take courses in the liberal arts and write a lot of papers.

You will be well rounded and highly respected when you graduate. And you will have a lot of fun at Fordham while you are there.

[] ECs: Human Relations Club, Anime Club, Spanish Honor Society, spent a week at Barnard College in NYC in an urban studies course, NAMES anti-bullying program, Relay for Life
[] Teacher Recs: 1 English teacher (spoke very highly of me)
[] Counselor Rec: 1 academic counselor (not sure what he said - didn’t see it; sure it was great)

[/ul]Other Factors: I applied an English major because that is the area of study I am interested in. It also helps because my math scores weren’t so great, and that shows them that I’m not interested in the sciences. General Comments: Super excited! Fordham is my first choice school!

NMSC semi-finalist

[] Teacher Recs: I’d say excellent – I was certainly flattered. My teacher wrote about how I am likely to become a very “inspiring activist” or something like that. My advice for recs to any prospective college applicants reading this - don’t worry, you’ll get good ones if you’re a good kid :).
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t read it, but I’m sure it was good; I am close with my guidance counselor.
[] Hook (if any): First generation.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: CT
[] School Type: public
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[/ul]Other Factors: Regarding my scholarship (see below) I did NOT file the PROFILE in time to receive an early estimate, so I expect to get need based aid regardless of any merit awards I may (hopefully) or may not get. (Not sure if this would be of any interest to anyone.)
I also received four years of housing, not sure if that’s important either. General Comments: I am wondering about scholarship consideration especially regarding my NMSC semi-finalist status, and the fact that Fordham appears to have a very generous scholarship for those with this distinction. I received nothing with my admission letter. Any insight would be appreciated. Very excited to have been admitted EA to such a wonderful university!

Citygirl: Congrats and welcome to Fordham. You got in based on your complete file…your SAT’s alone likely would have yielded a different result or deferral. But your ACT was in range and your GPA was high…and Fordham recognizes that SAT’s are not always a good indicator of success in college.

h2: you have stellar stats and a NMSC semifinalist. So call Admissions and ask them. Not all scholarships are decided now, in fact, many are delayed for later. Did you file a CSS form?

this sucks. im a white from a public school in Connecticut.

goldenlab: I responded to same question on the other thread. It depends.

Good luck to you.

Beatnumber: I am always surprised at who gets deferred. Every year. But its not just at Fordham either. It happens everywhere. Schools pick kids for lots of reasons and diversity in the class is a huge part of that…not just racial diversity, but geographical and otherwise. Don’t despair. Instead, write them a POWERFUL statement IMMEDIATELY and tell them, genuinely, where Fordham is on your list of schools and why you want to go there and what you hope to do while a student there (i.e. a particular interest of yours or community service etc.) Being deferred is not a death sentence. All sorts of kids get in RD from the EA cycle. It also means they had almost 10,000 applications this cycle… a record number in a string of record years! And the applicant pool is quickly becoming highly selective…to the point of being in the same category as its peer schools. I am not kidding.

So while I am sorry, be patient. Don’t be rude or discourteous to anyone…the kiss of death. Write that statement and be gracious. Check your recommendations. Get REALLY good grades this semester and SUBMIT THEM.

Your SAT’s are fine. That is NOT the problem.

And yes, sometimes things happen we can’t explain. Been there and done that with my D1 four years ago.

@ghostbuster - Thank you for your encouragement! At the bottom of my admissions letter, there was an email address I could contact with questions. I think I am going to go ahead and send an email to that person. I filed the CSS a couple of weeks ago.
