I really don’t know how the process works for merit aid awarded later, but good luck. Your writing score is impressive, though I don’t know what kind of weight Fordham places on it.

[] Counselor Rec: Same as teacher rec.
[li] Hook (if any): [/li]Honestly, it was what I thought was my hook that I believe hurt me. I knew that my low gpa/rank and frankly normal SAT scores would not put me at the top of the pile. So, in the section on the app where one is given the opportunity to explain any discrepancies on the academic record, I explained why my gpa was not where it should have been. But I made it clear that I do not blame my low grades on my circumstances. I shared that I was diagnosed with PTSD after being in a school bus accident and then became a victim of even worse trauma a month later. I also have an autistic brother and a depressed mother.

I thought if I explained that I’ve been in difficult circumstances but still manage to go through life with my goals intact (and with a positive attitude) that perhaps my obvious desire to improve and be successful could put me a few notches higher again. Maybe explaining all of this was just too much information, more than they wanted to know. Either way, I didn’t get in.

[/ul]General Comments:
I thought that my writing talent could make up for my low GPA, but I wasn’t anticipating getting in. I applied anyway, because they sent me a free app, and I thought, “Why not?” They were my reach school, and while I am not surprised with the decision, I am still upset with myself. This school could have been easy for me to get into, but sometimes things don’t go as you wish them to go.

To those considering applying here for next year, my advice is this: GPA matters A LOT to Fordham. So make sure yours is good. They have gotten increasingly competitive regarding admissions every year.

To those who got in: Congratulations, you all definitely deserve it. And good luck with everything else.
