Official Georgetown University Transfer Thread 2011

It doesn't look like anyone has started one, so I figured I might as well. In previous years, people received their decisions in about 10 days. Let's try and keep this thread alive!!

Around this time Georgetown is supposed to send emails to those missing materials, has anybody recieved such a an email yet?

I haven’t received anything like that. The only recent contact GU has made with me was for the alumni interview, which I had toward the end of March.

I haven’t received anything yet either

Is anyone applying to the SFS? I’m SOOO nervous, especially because the acceptance rate is only 10%. Also, Georgetown is my first choice (always has been) so the anxiety level is pretty high right now hahahaha.

Not applying to SFS, but where did you see that number?

I called the admissions office and asked them. 10% was the acceptance rate for transfer students to the SFS a few years ago (I think 2009), the average score on the CR was a 680 and math was a 670, and the average college gpa was a 3.8. I’m pretty sure the other schools–college, msb, NHS–have higher acceptance rates, however.

I haven’t heard a peep.

I am worried because I should have heard from them. I recently found out that I needed to send my highschool transcripts to them, which I thought I was exempt from. But I got them, and I’ve sent them out… but it wasn’t because they e-mailed me, I just found out on my own.

getting into Georgetown would be tantamount to re-writing my life story. It would be like a course correction. I so hope I am accepted.

Hoya Saxa!

@Agentsoapbox. Are you a non-traditional student? And if yes, is that why you thought you were exempt from submitting hs transcripts?

I can definitely relate to your strong desire to go to Georgetown. I feel that there is no other school that offers the same social and academic advantages that Georgetown does. I would turn every other school down for GU and the SFS anyday of the week hahaha.

Has anyone called or received similar statistics about Georgetown College?

In past years, people received their decisions ten days from now? I thought we weren’t supposed to hear anything until June 1st?

I just got my e-mail for the interview a couple days ago, and I have a week to schedule it. Not sure how long I have to actually do it.

Other than that, I haven’t heard anything. I’m not getting my hopes up, though. My SAT scores were a couple hundred point slower than the average. :</p>

@anontransfer. I can call the admissions office tmrw, when it is open, and ask them the statistics for the other colleges and the overall stats for the entire applicant pool.

@GodricGryffindor. I’m sorry for being unclear. SOME people receive their decision in 10 days according to previous threads.

Ah, thank you for the clarity. Would you mind posting your stats?

Yeah, sure.

Current institution: William and Mary
Year: Freshman
Applying to: SFS, International Economics
First semester GPA: 3.87, so ~3.9
SAT: 1460/1600; 2250/2400 (780M 680CR 790W)

How about you, GodricGryffindor?

I figured your stats were stronger than mine. But here they are:

Current Institution: Regionally ranked LAC
Year: I have Senior status, but I’m really a Freshman. I came in with about 70ish credits from dual-enrollment/AA from high school. However, I applied for Junior status since I expect only 60 credits, at most, will transfer over.
Applying to: SFS, Regional and Comparative Studies (Middle East)
GPA: 4.0 with 81 credits
SAT: ~1200/1900

W&M is one of the schools I applied to for transfer. How is it there? I find out if I got in May 1st via e-mail. Do you think I’m a strong candidate?

You’re gpa is obviously really good and above the average 3.8. You’re sat is lower than the 1350 (670 M, 680 CR), so I’m not exactly sure how the admissions committee will look at that. A lot of it, from what I’ve read, comes down to essays, recs, and extra curriculars just because it is so competitive and there are a lot of strong applicants (i.e. so many students have good GPAs and SATs but someone has to get rejected). If I get rejected, I’ll go back to W&M in the fall and try to strengthen my gpa, extracurriculars, essays (I’m not sure how much stronger they can get after I worked on them for 5 months), and apply again. All I can say is that you should do the same in case you don’t get in.

As for W&M, I would say most people like it. I just happen to be someone who doesn’t. Most of the student body comes from what is called Northern Virginia (or NOVA), which is part of the Greater Washington, D.C. area. And so, coming from a fairly urban place to the small little town of Williamsburg is a hard adjustment for some students, especially for me. I really wanted to go to school in a city, but W&M is affordable (I’m in-state) and strong academically, so that is why I went there. Georgetown was my first choice, but I was rejected in high school (hahaha no surprise there). That is why I’m applying as a transfer student.

My essays were decent, not spectacular. I’ve only been “in college” for a year and couldn’t really find an internship, however I do have a lot of EC’s and I had three amazing recs.

I also applied to GWU, but it’s not Georgetown. Not to mention GWU costs an arm and a leg.

I’m definitely also worried about the fact that I only have one semester worth of grades. I wonder how much emphasis the admissions committee will put on my college grades vs. high school. I don’t have any internships either, but my extracurricular activities/accomplishments are directly related to my future goals and international affairs. Hopefully, that will help a lot.

I got into GW when I applied in hs but turned it down and went to W&M. I didn’t apply to GW this time around, but if I get rejected to Georgetown, I might consider doing so next year.

Yes, I’m a non-traditional student. 26 years old, thats why I thought I was exempt. I didn’t have to supply neither American nor George Washington with HS transcripts, I didn’t know Gtown needed them. But no worries, I got them now.

My stats are not as great as your guy’s stats, but I do fall within the shallow end of the bell curve. hopefully my essay and recommendations push me into the accept pile.

Georgetown has been my dream school since I was a little boy. I never even dreamed of going to Georgetown, it just seemed out of reach. Only now do I have the courage to pursue it and the slim chance to get in… here’s hoping!

@Agentsoapbox. What school are you applying to? And where do you currently go to school?
