Official Harvard SCEA 2016 Applicants' Discussion Thread

definitely a relatively minor part of the application

^ definitely a relief.

My Harvard interview was my first interview ever, and it didn’t go as well as I hoped.

I slept for 3 hours the night before, had a bunch of things to take care of after school and a three hour lab to attend that night. The interview was squeezed in right before the lab, and definitely after every ounce of energy was juiced out of me. I realized that I was giving the same lame answer- “because I think it’s really interesting, blahblah”-for every question. Not too intellectual :frowning: My interviewer probably gave me an awful “intelligence/ critical thinking” score. He seemed really interested in my activities, but I think it was all an act because he was an extremely nice person. Pretty sure he could tell I was really nervous because he kept offering me water/tea/coffee hahah. At the end, he suggested I look into a particular UC because of the vibrant culture of CA. (basically saying Harvard is too dry/ wouldn’t fit what I’m looking for, right?). He said I would miss my high school life because it’s really hard to find people at Harvard who are willing to have fun and the social scene is really tense. At the end, he mentioned Harvard’s crazy low acceptance rate, and said to keep my options open. Then he talked about how acceptance/rejection is not in the hands of the interviewer and only bad reviews will affect the application (and mentioned, on a side-note, that he thinks I would be a perfectly fine applicant).

Stressful. All of it. I wish I could get a second chance. I really hope teacher recs show my true personality that was so skewed in the interviewer’s eyes. Oh well, we’ll find out in 22 days, I guess. Just hoping for the best :)

do you guys think one minor grammatical error will make or break your application?

I re-read my essays just now and realized i used an apostrophe when I probably shouldn’t have. It wasn’t a very obvious error (my adult reviser didn’t even catch it!)

But now i’m really worried ):<

It might make a difference when comparing applicants: if someone else has the EXACT same marks, EXACT EC’s, EXACT essays and EXACT everything, except he/she doesnt have an apostrophe, you will get REJECTED!!!

^^You done ****ed up. But that’s okay.

How many other schools are you guys applying to? My parents are making me apply to 12 more, regardless of what happens on Dec. 15th. Aaaand I have to finish all my apps by Dec. 1st.

What a mama’s boy.

oops . . .double post

@powerforgood - I doubt they’ll notice. When they quickly read your essay, they might not catch it, just like your adult reviser. I would just let it go and not worry about it.
@ojodeltigre - You are slightly crazy. Well, I’m applying to 16 more, so I shouldn’t talk, but my apps won’t be done until Dec 1. Dec 12, earliest.

I’m glad I have a 3 hour orchestra rehearsal on Dec 15, so I won’t be home until past 7pm, and won’t be waiting around for my decision.

^ your interviewer gave you a sheet to fill out? What did (s)he ask for? Just curious since we’re all being evaluated on the same things, but I was never given such a form to fill out.

Also, if your weighted GPA is a 4.0, then the admissions office will probably understand since they have the record of your 2 GPA’s…but the sheet most likely will not be sent to the admissions office; it was probably just to help the interviewer evaluate you.

The one I got from my area’s interview coordinator was just an activities/stats sheet (or rather, a 3-page packet). Nothing special.

I live on the West Coast, so I get out of school about 20 minutes before Harvard starts sending e-mails. Not sure what I’m going to do about that. :P

Speaking of which, what are you guys doing on December 15? How are you planning on waiting (or not) on the decision?

^No. I’ll deal with my rejection later :smiley: Been mentally preparing so no big deal.

My mom bought tickets for the Boston Ballet-The Nutcracker for Dec 15! :smiley:
I might just use wifi to get my results, so the ballet would either be a special present or something to cheer me up…

@rosencratz: I couldn’t help but notice…it’s Rosencrantz if you’re making a Hamlet reference.

If you really need to know at 5 pm, you can just check to see if you still have access to your Harvard application status page, right?

Or does that not work?

@collegeinfo1994: upon much stalking :stuck_out_tongue: on other year’s results discussions, the log in thing works every year. Also, I don’t think it’s the application status page, but the admitted students page linked on the top corcer of the status page.

^Thank you for the clarification!

My last name is at the end of the alphabet, so the admitted students page will be very helpful (I heard emails are sent in alphabetical order…I wonder if acceptances are sent before rejections :stuck_out_tongue: ). What happens to people who are waitlisted?

I’m hitting up a Say Anything concert on the 16th. It’ll either be my rebound-maneuver or some sort of awesome, celebratory outing. Either way; SAY ANYTHING IS AMAZING LIVE <3

@RarissimaAvis: Haha, you’re right… oops.

@collegeinfo: read this

It looks like it’s not by last name. It might be by region, but I inclined to say that they send all emails out at the same time; it just depends on the email server. If you’re waitlisted, you can’t log in to the admitted students page, but I don’t know about deferred cases.
