[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): varsity cross country (ran on state-winning team), officer of science honor society and community service organization, blogger for the huffington post, modern dance company (before moving to current school), science UIL team, debate team, quiz bowl team
[] Job/Work Experience: fashion photography – shot for Nike and ANTM
[] Volunteer/Community service: 400+ hours at special needs camp
[] Summer Activities: Summer @ Brown
[] Essays: Common app one was okay, but I was proud of my supplement essay–talked about my interest in neuroscience through an anecdote of becoming friends with an autistic kid and mused about the possibility of alternate semiotic systems.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I imagine they were excellent, but so are everyone’s
[] Counselor Rec: See above.
[] Additional Rec:
[] Interview: She basically asked me to be her daughter-in-law.

[] Strengths:
[] Weaknesses:
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: ASIAN
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
[/ul]General Comments:

it seems like Harvard doesnt like Asians too much.

I am pretty sure its not that asians dont have character or uniqueness.
They’re just… Asian!

I’d put it differently. It seems like there is an overabundance of qualified Asian applicants to Harvard.

All of this is just depressing.

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 720 M, 770 W, 780 CR (only okay, but single-sitting in freshman year)
[] ACT:
[] SAT II: Literature 800, Spanish 800, French 800, Math I 780, Biology 760
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 93% (sorry I don’t understand the 4.0 thing)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Canadian, don’t have these
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): I’m in the first year of an IB program, it’s a Quebec thing
[] Senior Year Course Load: IB Economics, IB 19th century European history, IB Linear Algebra, IB English, IB French, IB Biology, Gym. All the classes are in French except English. Next semester is mostly the same but with cal, two English classes, and theory of knowledge.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): I’ve never even heard of ANY of these
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Voice lessons for the past 7 years, I’m a soprano; small women’s choir (soloist); school theatre (added a musical number for the hell of it); ballroom dance for the past 5 years; music theory and ear training (highest mark in all classes, skipped a year by exam); I spent six months on an exchange program in Uruguay where I did a lot of intensive musical theatre classes; other random not-particularly-significant stuff, but I only filled out the ten slots
[] Job/Work Experience:
[] Volunteer/Community service: A lot of pretty widely distributed volunteer translation work over the past three years, Eng-Fr and Fr-Eng, mostly music-related; Ten Thousand Villages cashier for a few years; alumni volunteer for my exchange program organization YFU, I do departure orientations and translation.
[] Summer Activities: Montreal Jazz Festival Blues Camp (sang with a combo on a big outdoor stage at the Jazz Fest); summer German classes
[] Essays: I was happy with the main one. I felt obligated to use the supplement to explain what I was doing homeschooling in grades 9 and 10 but it really wasn’t that artistic.
[] Teacher Recommendation: probably the same old glowing fare they get from everyone
[] Counselor Rec: Probably pretty good, but he isn’t actually a counselor—he’s a Princeton alum who gets paid to explain the American admissions process to Quebec kids at my school.
[] Additional Rec: none
[] Interview: I heard through the grapevine of McGill grad students that she thought I did really well. I don’t actually remember anything though.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Quebec
[] Country (if international applicant): Canada, I’m a dual citizen though
[] School Type: competitive French private this year and last; home schooled in grades 9 and 10, plus six months in Uruguay in grade 10. I sound so bizarre to myself. I’m pretty normal actually!
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: around 100k but 30% of it is taxes
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): It seems like my family has been to every Ivy except Harvard. Still haven’t figured out if this is good or bad.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Mainly educated in French but am still very Anglophone, also Spanish, oddball ECs, essays, interview. They probably get very few Quebec applicants.
[] Weaknesses: SATs, no prizes, no competitions, no tutoring or clubs and stuff like that, sketchy documentation for my time homeschooling, 75s in gym, haven’t finished my 13-year program of study and my high school career is either unique or just really weird, and I’m not one of those ultra-intense home schoolers, mostly I just read books.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I could have been ten times more intense about my application, I didn’t even send supplementary voice materials. Don’t really know though, putting it down to fate and a strong applicant pool mostly.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’ll apply to a few other Ivies, otherwise it’s McGill or UBC for me[/li][/ul]General Comments:
I have this theory. I think holistic admissions implies that getting into college is a judgment of your personal worth slash essential value as a person. As a result, our entire teenage lives are about school, when the point of holistic admissions is the opposite. I’ll probably end up going to McGill where there is a G.P.A. cutoff. All they look at is one number. It may be oversimplified and one-sided, but at least it gives peace of mind and allows you to enjoy high school.
Congratulations to the admitted people, you’re really cool and you have bright futures. Good luck to those deferred, although actually what I want to say to you is “Let’s be really angry at the world for a while and break down crying and complain to our friends and family, and then let’s realize that life isn’t so bad with or without Harvard and that no good autobiography doesn’t have setback-y epiphany moments.”

Before I post mine, holy **** at preludeinEminor’s post. You seem like a pretty cool person, shame you didn’t get in… a lot of pluses to your application. 2270 in freshman year? As in, Grade 9?? Damn… props. I don’t know why you said it’s one of your weaknesses. It’s not a weakness at all. The admission committee probably considers a 2270 to be the same as maybe a 2320. Either way it’s a high score, higher than the average Harvard score. Also, crazy that you got 800 in Literature. That’s an insanely hard enough score to get as it is for Lit, without being multi-lingual like you are.

At your “general comments”, I think everyone (including the adcom) knows there’s only so much the adcom can get to know about you through the application process. Their decision is in no way a judgement of your value as a person. They choose whoever they think would benefit Harvard the most (most people in terms of involvement/contributions, athletes in terms of athletic reputation and stuff, legacies in terms of moneyz, etc.). And it often really does come to chance. Many people who are rejected would actually be better for Harvard than some of the current students there.

In any case, tough luck on being deferred but you still have a chance. Have fun applying to the other Ivies :/

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 750M, 720R, 700W (7 essay)
[] ACT:
[] SAT II: 760 Math II, 600 Chem (!!!)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 100): 92ish
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Haven’t taken any exams
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load: 6 APs + band
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Soccer, I play competitively out of school and train almost every day. That’s the main one. I wasn’t recruited but got a letter of support from the Harvard coach. Also, I’ve been doing band for about five years, I’m head of a school club… but not too much other than the sport I play.
[] Job/Work Experience: Limited. I did a bit of soccer coaching.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Also limited. Just did a few things here and there.
[] Summer Activities:
[] Essays: Common app one was very solid, wrote it on soccer. Supp was meh. Kind of unnecessary (but necessary at the same time because the optional essay is actually important). I really have no idea what they though of my supp essay.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One should have been very solid, but I’m not sure what it was like (never saw it). I was really good in the teacher’s class, though. The other was decent I guess, nothing amazing but still pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably meh. Barely knew my counselor.
[] Additional Rec: Letter of support from Harvard coach I guess. It should have held a fair amount of weight.
[] Interview: Pretty good, I was very happy with it because I was pretty anxious before it.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): WA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public, quite a few applied from my school to Harvard though
[] Ethnicity: I “identified” with the “Indian sub-continent”
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: Upper middle
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Soccer, common app essay maybe
[] Weaknesses: Definitely my SAT II score. Possibly also my SAT I score although it wasn’t horrible.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have a good feeling it was because of my SAT II score, but I guess we’ll see if that was really the reason in March! (I retook the Chem in December and I’m expecting a MUCH higher score. If not, I don’t deserve to go to Harvard anyway.)
[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: This is the SCEA thread. Pretty sure nobody’s been accepted/deferred/rejected anywhere else.[/li][/ul]General Comments: It’s a bit of a bittersweet situation. On one hand, it’s better than rejection, and I’ll get to send in a higher SAT II score for them to look at. On the other, first, it sucks to not be accepted (although, obviously, it’s Harvard, so I couldn’t expect to be accepted), and second, my chances are likely lowered now that I’ve been deferred to the regular pool. Congrats to all those accepted, and to all those deferred or rejected, keep your heads up. You’re all still awesome people (yes, even you brats out there trying to blame everything on affirmative action or something :P). You’ve worked hard, and have come a long ways to even be considered for Harvard. A lot of the time it’s just hard luck that you weren’t accepted.
If you were deferred, yes, you still have a chance, but plan for the worst scenario. Expect that you’ll get rejected in March, because it is likely. And if you do get accepted, well, it’ll probably be a bit more than a pleasant surprise. You’ll kinda be on top of the world. A bit. For now, finish those other apps if you haven’t already (I haven’t… gotta get on that eh) and enjoy the Christmas break.

As Dean Pelton would say, Merry Happy to all of you! Even the eager beaver juniors reading this thread in Summer 2013. (Note: it doesn’t actually help you. Work hard and be yourself, and that’s all you need to apply. After that it’s just up to chance.)

[] Counselor Rec: Probably great but she also has 30 other student recs to write

[] Essays: Common App one was about recovering from my spinal cord injury and how it shaped me as a person. Supplemental essay was about a quote from John Green’s *Looking for Alaska * and how it changed my perspective about attending college. I thought both were pretty good - I had 3 teachers review them for me, and they all said they were great.
[] Teacher Recommendation: A phenomenol recommendation from my Latin and Greek teacher of 5 years - a Harvard graduate school alumnus.
Decision:Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): Did not take
[] ACT: 33 Comp, 35E, 31M, 31R, 34S, 11W (one and only sitting)
[] SAT II: 730 M1, 790 Chem
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.95
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 2/327
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP English Lang. (5), APUSH (5), AP World (5)…I took every advanced class offered, but many are through SUNY (State University of NY)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): None
[] Senior Year Course Load: Physics, SUNY Wind Ensemble, AP Calc BC, Engineering, AP English Lit., SUNY Science Research
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Silver Medalist at the International Sustainable World (Engineering, Energy, Environment) Project Olympiad, Presidential Service Award (Silver), AP Scholar, District Student of Distinction for Higher Level Science, 1st Place Engineering and 3rd place overall at a regional science fair (JSHS)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Mechanical Engineering Intern (did this over two summers and during the school year, Columbia University and City College of New York), Newspaper (Editor-in-Chief), United Synagogue Youth (Chapter President), Swimming (Varsity, 4yrs), Ski Club (Founder), School Athletics Dept. (built and launched their new site), town booster club (again, managed website), Federal Reserve Challenge (captain and participant on a specially selected team), Jazz Band (2nd Alto Sax), National Honor Society…I had too many to list on my common app, but I stuck to these because these are what I cared about most. I figured I’d rather keep it short and sweet than attach a lengthy, obnoxious resume.
[] Job/Work Experience: Lifeguarded
[] Volunteer/Community service: Nothing huge…mostly through my synagogue (that’s how I got the presidential service award). I didn’t make this come across as much in my application because I was much more passionate about my other activities.
[] Summer Activities: Lab researcher, lifeguarded on weekends
[] Essays: Great. Made two readers cry, and my English teacher pleaded with me not to change it because she thought it was so good.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Great. It was from my science research teacher who I work for over the summer, and who I went to this international competition with (so we’re very close). Spoke about how I was in his top 2% of students in 27 years of teaching, and that I was extremely mature, dedicated, and dependable.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t get to read, but she personally told me how proud of it she was
[] Additional Rec: Same as with the counselor rec. We’re also very close, as she’s the advisor for newspaper. She was angry when I didn’t get in.
[] Interview: Great! We spoke for two hours for what was supposed to be a 45 minute interview about much more than just school. In further correspondence with her, she mentioned how much she enjoyed it and when I told her I got deferred she told me to be sure to keep her posted on any awards so she could advocate for me.

[] State (if domestic applicant): NY
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: 200-250k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, interview, recs, ECs, transcript
[] Weaknesses: didn’t play up volunteerism enough, lack of job experience, scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Bright, white and Jewish well-rounded kid from Westchester County. This is NOT an argument against affirmative action. In fact I’m for it when I know a bunch of kids who hate it. Also, the scores. My school has a reputation of getting kids into Harvard (with lower than average scores, too), and I’m on the upper end of the chances, but for SCEA, my scores just aren’t there…although I think they’re good, with the exception of M1. Also, no one has gotten in from my school without winning Intel STS…I’m crossing my fingers on that one! Otherwise, I’m hoping I can get into another STEM program. My grades and qualifications in math and science from my research should give enough of a boost somewhere…and one’s all I need!
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere yet! Thank god I had my other supplements done though.[/li][/ul]General Comments:
Congrats to all accepted! I was going to do UPenn ED until I got a letter from H over the summer, so this was never the top of the top for choices for me…although it would’ve been cool to be accepted. Really, really hoping to get into Penn, Cornell, Dartmouth, or Northwestern–any would be wonderful!! Only regret is that I didn’t apply to SUNY Binghamton EA…at least I would’ve known something. Still, maybe my school’s magic will work in the RD round if I win Intel STS!! I think that could put me over the top, knowing the way my school has worked in the past. Last year, a girl who applied SCEA was deferred pending STS and, after not winning, was rejected. A girl who applied RD and won STS was accepted. And that story continues. Anyhow, I was prepared for deferral so what can ya do? Only disappointment was my English teacher and science teacher…they were pretty upset I didn’t get in.

Realized I screwed up/forgot some stuff, was so caught up in everything last night xDD So reposting^^

[] Summer Activities: Girl scout camp for five years, summer theatre program, tutoring.
[] Essays: I’m assuming very good, though they weren’t about any life-changing events, just my interests and things I do. One was about my writing, particularly the four and a half novels that were spawned out of five years of NaNoWriMo, and the other was about my website, hungergamesrpg.com.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was definitely phenomenal, the other was probably pretty great as well. English and Psychology teachers.

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2340 (740 CR, 800 M, 800 W)

[] IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Spanish Literature, AP English Literature, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, AP Statistics, Leadership Seminar, and a bunch of electives
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Semifinalist, National AP Scholar, Toshiba ExploraVision Honorable Mention, Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): 8 Theater Productions (Featured and Leading Roles, Stage Designer), nominated by PaperMill Play House for Outstanding Production of a Classic and Best Performance by and Actor in a Leading Role, Service Learning Organization (Founder, President) and significantly opened up service opportunities for students in my school, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Brass/Wind Ensemble, Diocesan Youth Band (Alto and Baritone Saxophones), Vocal Studies for four years, sing in an a cappella chorus and a music ministry program, chosen to sing in NJ Region I concert, Peer Leader, National and Spanish Honor Societies (Spanish Honor Society Vice President and PR Manager), tutoring Physics, Spanish, Precalculus, and SAT Preparation
[] Job/Work Experience: Waiting and busing tables freshman year, working with autistic children the following summer, research internship at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for four weeks the summer after junior year.
[] Volunteer/Community service: 450+ hours with my service organization, raised $15,000 for cancer research by hosting a school function, starting an outreach program for autistic children through my school, and getting the entire student body to perform 10,000 of collective service in two months. Unfortunately nothing SO focused but the fact that I introduced a lot of new things to students said a lot.
[] Summer Activities: Freshmen year bussed and waited tables, sophomore year Johns Hopkins CTY to study Cryptography and worked at autistic children’s camp, junior year Cold Spring Harbor Lab internship and attended the New Jersey Governor’s School in the Sciences where I carried out research in computational biochemistry
[] Essays: My peers didn’t like them but any adult or older person were absolutely enthralled by them, and I guess that’s the sort of audience you get in the admissions office right? I thought they were both a good representation of who I was. My CommonApp was about Dopey from Snow White and my supplement was about how I grew to love science, and I used a Harry Potter metaphor to explain the magic of it all. It sounded a lot better on paper I promise
[] Teacher Recommendation: Read one and thought it was pretty generic, but I guess obviously it was good enough! The other two I didn’t see but I’m assuming they were quite positive.
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor is a nut and has no idea how to get students into college, the fact that I got into Harvard is a complete anomaly. I had to explain to him what the difference between ED and EA was. I’m sure his rec was positive but nothing phenomenal.
[] Additional Rec: My research advisor from my genetics research internship and my Gov School Evaluation
[] Interview: Okay I guess. He didn’t seem too impressed by me, but he was interested in how I managed to do all I did and really tried to play up that my parents grew up from nothing. He was pretty awkward though and he seemed more nervous than I was and constantly stuttered and we had a difficult time communicating. Definitely nothing to write home about, but it lasted over two hours.

[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Large Catholic High School
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: $200,000+
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): first generation college student, first generation American?
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I honestly don’t know! Throughout the whole process I kept thinking I screwed up everything and ruined my chances, but that’s probably because I’m overly neurotic when I’m left to my own thoughts and am an utter perfectionist about things. I guess my essays were really genuine and I showed real initiative and depth in a lot of my extracurriculars. From an academic perspective I could definitely say I was in range for Harvard and competitive
[] Weaknesses: Generic recommendations? Sucky interview? Those two stand out but that’s about it. And they may not have even been that bad, but my perception is always skewed with these things.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:I guess I was a really well-rounded, strong guy with good essays who seemed like he was put together. Looking back I think I was a good fit for Harvard, and I guess that showed in my application. I’m incredibly excited to see how this goes.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Just accepted to Rutgers. Withdrawing all my other applications :P[/li][/ul]General Comments: OH MY GOSH HOLY SWEET JESUS I CANT BELIEVE IT. I was crying hysterically when I found out, and my parents and friends had never been more proud in their life. I’m more than ready to embrace an amazing four years with some of the most brilliant minds in the WORLD!!! To those accepted, WOOOHOOOOO join the Facebook group and PM me! To those deferred and rejected, just know that the system always seems to have a way of working out in everyone’s favor, and we all end up in the place that we truly belong and will forever be happy with  It took me a long time to realize that, but there really is such a truth in that. Now, off to celebrate HELL YEAH!!!
