Official Harvard University RD Class Of 2017 Thread

Still haven’t been contacted and at this point I’m hoping that I’m not contacted. Honestly I don’t think interviews really do much at all to your application. My Yale one was pretty average (maybe because I found out about it the day of) and I ended up getting in.

Has anyone in the Chicago area been contacted for an interview for regular decision? I have not been and was wondering if others have been. Thanks!

I really don’t know what to say when they ask my why Harvard. Try as I might, the only difference between it and the other schools I applied to is that it has a higher rank.

Have you visited? If so what stood out to you?

I have not. I’m just going to be honest and say I have a much more… pragmatic way of applying to schools. If it has my location, major, etc, then that’s why I applied. I won’t be able to lie and be one of those, “Oh, ever since I was a little boy Harvard has been the only option!”

It’s a great school, the best for my major, has great languages, is by a great city, and that’s all.

CSI: May I offer you these to stimulate your thinking (about H or any college, really):

What type of students do you think attend the school? Would you enjoy them? Would they challenge you? Would you challenge them? How much diversity is among the students? Would you like/dislike the amount of diversity there? What’s your definition of a “great school”? And does this school fit that definition? Do you see yourself sampling other areas of study? Are you open to completely switching your prospective major if something better came along to woo you away? What do you know about the school ethos? Is that attractive to you? Why? Why not?

Can you answer these questions about any of the schools you’ve targeted? They might be important when you’re choosing among those that accept you.

T26E4, how much would you say whether a college thinks it’s a candidate’s first choice factors in an HYP admissions decision?

None whatsoever. HYP have the highest yields extant. Of those that turn them down, they tend to lose applicants to each other, MIT and Stanford.

“first choice” and “demonstrated interest” are not in the HYPMS vocabulary.

T26E4, I’m amazed by your consistently thoughtful posts. I have no idea why you’re still here hanging out with stressed-out high school kids, but I truly appreciate it. Thanks. :)

@t26E4

stupiddorkyidiot has got it right! Thanks for posting. It is really appreciated.

That’s what I had hoped - I couldn’t really give a reason for going to one of them that didn’t apply to the other two.

Just as a fun fact, Brigham Young University also has a very high yield, presumably because of its unique niche in higher education.

hey guys! applying to the H regular and i had a quick question! I am in the IB so i take theory of knowledge. my teacher is very strict with his grading and basically doesnt like giving out A’s. I have been fine for my first semester but now I have a C in the class and I’m really afraid! I think i can still work with it since the quarter only just started but in general does anyone know if the grades we get in the last semester are ever looked at? One of my teachers told us once that when you apply to med school sometimes they look at HS transcripts and even with internships or summer opportunities. HELP!!!

No interview still. :o

Or, I would suspect, to colleges such as Amherst, Williams and Swarthmore, that offer a comparably excellent education, but in a different kind of environment. A young woman of my acquaintance, a legacy at Harvard, turned Harvard down for Haverford a couple of years ago, and all of us, including her dad, said essentially, “OK, I get that.”

Luniversity - as a physician, I know of no medical school that looks at or cares about a HS transcript. I wouldn’t worry too much about TOK as it’s not a core course. Just make sure you keep all other grades up.

how many likely letters do they send out compared to how many people get in?

From what I’ve heard only a couple hundred (maybe 300?). Only a fraction of all the ~2000 admited students get them.

wow… i can only imagine what those people have accomplished
i just got a likely letter for William and Mary imagine getting one from Harvard…

^
Congratulations on the likely
I know, I tell myself that it would be a miracle if I am admitted, let alone recieve a likely letter.
