So what did you all choose to write your supplemental essays on? I took one of my favorite blog posts where I wrote about my love for poetry.

I wrote about how much I love poor people.

^sarcasam? That seems like a broad statement, because while many poor people are great there are some that aren’t just like at any economic level.

But anyway, I wrote an essay on my love of the hip hop group Das Racist. It seems silly but it was genuine and I think I pulled it off. And they broke up last month :(

Not sarcasm. That was my essay’s theme. Helping those from a low SES is my passion. One of them actually.

Okay, sorry for my skeptisicism.
I’m in an odd situation because I come form a comfortable middle class home, but due to events from a couple years ago my mother is now a single parent and we are on Medicaid etc.
It’s really made me appreciate the little things.

No worries! ^▁^

Yeah, life is more challenging at times without a sufficient income. It’s made me stronger, though. And, similar to what you said, I appreciate everything I’m given more, lol.

hey guys (:

so was anyone else frightened by the super high early acceptance rate? i feel like regular is really going to be just short of impossible

I heard it’s gonna be around %3.
T_T That’s terrifying. I don’t have high hopes, though, so it’s k.

There is no standard. It varies city by city since it’s all coordinated by volunteers. Your name is on a list, sent to the area coordinator. He/She then assigns you to an interviewer. Then it’s up to that person to contact you. It could be immediately – it could be the end of Feb. It’s a volunteer, thus the variation.

Completely irrelevant

I haven’t gotten called for an interview yet, but I live in NY…so I’m sure I’ll be getting one soon enough. lol. harvard interviews seem really daunting! I’m extremely nervous!

Hello HAH-VAHD hopefuls!

HA, can’t believe I even applied.

I’m gonna get rejected so hard lol. The interview should be fun at least, I feel like I’m good at them.

I heard the acceptance rate of RD this year is going to be 3% considering the higher than usual EA admittance. Is this accurate?

Also are interviews guaranteed?

Me too, unicameral

Catie, I don’t anticipate admissions being very much tougher than they were last year. The EA acceptance barely went up. I would imagine that RD will fall somewhere between 5.5 and 6.5 percent

Oh okay, thanks.
Even though I still highly doubt I’ll get in haha.

karatekid666,

I’m not sure why you’d think the acceptance rate RD will be 5% - 6.5%.

First, EA went up this year about 15% in terms of applicants and in terms of acceptances. That modest increase is likely to depress the RD acceptance rate below last year’s 3.9%. The overall yield was 81% of accepted students deciding to enroll at Harvard.

This year, 895 students were selected EA. If yield is 90% (and that’s probably conservative), that takes up about 800 seats. Last year, Harvard had roughly 1650 freshmen enroll, and I’d guess they’re looking for a similar-sized class this year.

Last year, roughly 34K students applied between RD and EA. Roughly 30K were RD applicants. If you figure that this year, closer to 5K applied EA, then let’s call RD 29K. About 100 students were admitted RD who’d been deferred EA. Let’s call that roughly the same this year. That leaves about 750 spots, give or take a few, from 29K applicants. Assuming a yield of 70% RD, which gives an overall yield near 80%, which is what it was last year, that means that Harvard will admit about 1070 RD applicants, which is something like 3.6% or thereabouts.

Some folks have credibly estimated the numbers in such a way as to come up with an overall RD acceptance rate nearer to 3%.

Unless there is a dramatic fall-off in RD applications, or Harvard increases the number of seats available for incoming freshmen by 200 or more, neither of which seem likely, there aren’t enough seats left to get to an acceptance rate of 5% - 6%.

Sorry, I meant overall the rate would be 5-6. Not RD

I have applied to Harvard and was wondering, are there any more “normal” people who have applied?
I have an SAT of 2180 and average grades.
What are your scores like?

I have a 2160 SAT but my grades are perfect. I’ve never got an A- or a B…
