I am posting this because college confidential has been a huge help for me in the college search and I hope that rising seniors see my post and I can help them as well. I was offered the Marquis scholarship from Lafayette and wanted to demonstrated to worried juniors that it’s not all about the grades or scores. Yes, those matter, but I wouldn’t say mine were above average. Set yourself apart with amazing essays and detailed recommendations and you will be fine. The amount of time you put into applying and getting involved in your community is DEFINITELY reflected in the college offers and scholarship offers you will receive. Also, INTERVIEW. Cannot stress this enough. Adds just that much more to your application.

I would like to add to interview on campus, and make sure you get down there before you apply. Especially if you think they will comsider you a borderline student.

And a rule of advice to all: If you are using such a good school as Lafayette as a safety, make sure you show some interest. Elsewise, they or another college of a similar calibar may waitlist or even reject you, assuming that you will just go to a Harvard or Yale and were never really all that interested in the school. I’ve heard it’s happened before at several schools. Of course, this didn’t effect me as Lafayette was all but a safety…
