Official Letter of Admission

Dear _______:

Congratulations! The Admissions Committee and I take great pleasure in offering you a place in the Duke University Class of 2009. We are delighted to give you the opportunity to become part of the Duke community.

You should be extremely proud of your achievements. Your many successes in and outside of the classroom have earned you a place among the world's best students. The competition this year was extraordinarily keen – we received more than 18,000 applications for just 1,660 places in the first-year class. The students we have admitted come from across the country and around the world, and bring to Duke an extraordinary variety of interests, backgrounds, experiences, and talents. You and your classmates can expect to be challenged intellectually, to form enduring bonds of friendship and community, and to share in the excitement of discovery that pervades our campus.

I especially want to draw your attention to the invitation in your admit packet to Blue Devil Days, our series of one-day on-campus programs for accepted students, which takes place in April. I strongly encourage you to attend, as you will be able to experience personally the enthusiasm Duke generates among the members of its community.

To become a member of the Class of 2009, we only need you to complete some paperwork. To secure your place in the Class of 2009, please return the reply card in your admit packet along with a $200 deposit postmarked by May 2 in order to hold your space in the entering class. If you find that you must decline this offer, please be sure to return the reply card so that our records will be accurate.

Your packet also includes an instructions and enrollment checklist, with vital information regarding tuition and financial aid, housing, dining, and other campus services. Please read this material carefully. Once you decide to enroll, you will be hearing from a number of different departments of the University over the coming months, and this material will give you important background information.

You have my warmest congratulations on your admission to Duke. The faculty and I look forward to having you among us this fall.

Sincerely,
