^ No, being a Feb does not mean that you were “second tier”. Often Febbers will have certain characteristics that the are looking for. Also, being a Febber will not hurt your ability to play interscholastic soccer or get into med school.
@nmocha567 You’re welcome. I wish you all the best!
After looking at collegeconfidential all year, I just caved in and made an account. Hope this is written correctly!
Decision: Accepted (September)
Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 1510 (800 math, 710 reading, 20 on writing (essay))
[] ACT: did not take
[] SAT II: did not send to Middlebury
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): no ranks/percentiles are given by my school, but I would estimate top 5%
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Calc BC (5), Chemistry (4), Biology (4), US Government (4), French Language and Culture (4), World History (3), US History (2 - this was my freshman year, and I’ve shown a general trend of improvement over the years)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): not offered at my school
[] Senior Year Course Load: Marching Band (first trimester)/Wind Ensemble (last two trimesters), Econ/Sociology/Abnormal Psychology (1 trimester each), AP Physics I, AP Language and Composition, Intro to Linear Algebra (honors section at U of I, first semester), Calc III (honors section at U of I, second semester), Oral Expression in French I/II (1 semester each at U of I)
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): President’s Environmental Youth Award, National Merit Scholar finalist, expected to be Valedictorian
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Band/Marching Band/Jazz Band (section leader), Girl Scouts, literary magazine staff (publicist), math club (state team member all 3 years of involvement), JV tennis, club that brings motivational speakers to school
[] Job/Work Experience: counselor at Girl Scout summer camp
[] Volunteer/Community service: multiple summer camps, tutoring
[] Summer Activities: summer camp counselor/volunteer as CIT before counselor eligibility, internship at U of I chem lab
[] Essays: Common App: 9/10 (not exactly sure how to rate my own writing but I think it was good), details my ever-changing relationship with my grandpa’s truck (difficult to explain without reading)
[] Teacher Recommendation: Teacher 1: math teacher from sophomore and junior year, was math team coach sophomore year, really likes me. Probably 9 or 10/10 (I haven’t read it)
Teacher 2: French teacher from first 3 years of high school, went on school French trip together so knows me very well, but he can be harsh (he’s French so it’s natural…lol). He did think I got to read his recommendation (I didn’t), so it must not be too harsh. Probably 9/10
[] Counselor Rec: I’ve talked to her a lot. 9/10
[] Additional Rec: none
[] Interview: definitely went well. It was short (but was planned to be short), over the phone…had a lot in common with the interviewer (she studied Spanish and I liked Midd for its language programs, for example) 8 or 9/10
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Undecided, likely Chemistry or French
[] State (if domestic applicant): Iowa
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: complicated situation
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Maybe an underrepresented state? Not all that many schools in Iowa regularly churn out students applying to top schools
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: course load (10 APs and 7 honors classes, plus 4 classes at U of I), GPA
[] Weaknesses: leadership positions, not extra special in terms of weird hobbies or cool personality traits
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I believe I had a strong application, and connected with my interviewer. Overall not sure.[/li][/ul]General Comments: I’m so excited to have been accepted to Midd! I loved it, and I’ll definitely be considering it. I’ll have to get more financial aid to attend, but hoping it all works out!
Other schools:
Accepted: U of Iowa (super safety), College of Wooster (safety, with College Scholar Award), Grinnell (early write, with merit scholarship), Bowdoin (with Founder’s Scholar award), Middlebury
Rejected: none so far
Waiting: Haverford, Brown, Dartmouth, Columbia, Harvard, Yale, Princeton (deferred SCEA)
@Georgia101 Entering as a Feb will NOT decrease your chances of getting into medical school. Use the extra time constructively - volunteer at a clinic, work as an EMT, do research at an academic medical center, etc - and you could actually improve your chances of gaining admission to medical school.
Is there a rule that says a Feb can not walk on to a team that starts practice in the fall (i.e. before officially enrolling in February)? It would be worth looking into…
@CodyChesnutt unfortunately I’m fairly certain that there is an NCAA rule that you have to be enrolled in college in order to play on the sports team and technically I wouldn’t be enrolled or attending until February
^ But you would still have 4 years of eligibility if you joined the team after you started in February.
Are you being recruited for soccer at Midd?
Waitlisted

[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I am a competitive applicant, but there isn’t quite enough to make me a lock for schools at the caliber of Midd. I am also waitlisted at Colby and its very interesting to see people with better numbers, more award etc. be rejected or accepted at these two schools.
I’m also waiting to hear from: Georgetown, Colgate, Hamilton, Colby, and Carleton
PS: sorry for the bad grammar lol.
@londondad yes I have been recruited. I am aware of the four years of eligibity, but that would mean I would have to take 6 months off of soccer since my birth year makes me ineligible to play another season at the youth club level, so I would be in no shape physically and loose all my skill from the time off so I would be unable to contribute to the program as much as I would’ve if I started this fall. frustrating situation but I’m trying to see if I can get around it
^ I am sure that you could find a soccer team to play with to stay in shape for 6 months. You will not lose (not “loose”) all of your skill in the course of one semester! (We are talking about Div 3 here!) In any event, most Febs take the opportunity to try something new, such as travelling to Asia, charity work, etc. so you will be playing less anyway. In any case, since you feel so strongly about this, speak to the coach. At the end of the day, the focus should be on where you and your parents think that you will get the best education.
