Official MIT Class of 2012 Early Action Decisions Thread

how have you been paying more attention in my math class than I have?

way to talk about me behind my back, guys. psh.
haha no, I felt like not being the only un-represented hshsper. besides krith.

ahhh! so excited. MIT <3
I'll post stats later, I guess

I found my stats post that I typed earlier and then had a crash .. luckily I was editing in an external editor (to change the "[ "s to "["s faster) and I recovered the temporary file

Accepted

[/ul]
Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: Pretty good .. spent a lot of time on. 3a: playing DDR is relaxing. 3b: Very specific response about Course VI and possible UROPs at CSAIL or Media Lab. 4: Three tiered values - learning (taking hardest classes, learning on own, etc), living (friends, theater, chorus, fun), and loving (community service, caring about others, Boy Scouts, reading Philosophy and studying many different religions in a search for higher truth)
[]Teacher Recs: Both forms topped out, Math letter complimentary but not too specific .. called me one of her best students ever and she's been teaching for 30->40 years. Humanities teacher (Spanish) worked on it very hard and it was very good
[]Counselor Rec: Amazing. Very MIT-specific and complimentary.
[]Supplementary Material: Essay about a schedule matching, facebook impersonating website I repeatedly created (lost code) that got used by over a quarter of my school (of 2400 people). Letter from my Research Mentor at NASA LaRC from last summer
[]Interview: went amazing.. met with EC twice at a coffee shop, talked for a total of more than 4 hours about MIT, Life, Politics, Religious truth, Theater, Copyright Law, and many more things than I can remeber [/ul]

zomg, congratulations to everyone who was accepted!! I'm already excited to see y'all here next fall! :D

And to those deferred: don't lose hope! One of the most brilliant/awesome guys I know in my year was, in fact, waitlisted. So yeah, it means NOTHING!

Yay 2012! <3

wait, ducktape. is that story a joke? cause it doesn't seem like youre joking. how would he have called you? i feel either really gullible, or you have an amazing story to tell.

Congratulations ALL

whats VP ? i have seen ths abbreviation mentioned a couple of times.
and ye CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THOSE WHO MADE IT

other than its usual meaning of vice president of club.
btw can we actually send in supplementary material? Post?

So, I know two kids who applied to MIT...one completely deserved it (BTW, I'm not talking about me)...the other one, not so much. Needless to say, the undeserving student got in. And what makes this kid undeserving? Talking back to teachers, cheating all the time on exams, not even liking math or science, sub-par SAT scores, hardly any ECs or awards...seriously w.t.f.? But this kid was a URM. And what makes the other dude more deserving? He's a science genius, he's genuinely nice, he won a lot of awards, he had pretty decent stats, and he absolutely loves the school for the right reasons. So there you have it. MIT made HUGE mistake. Hopefully, they accept the deserving kid second time around.

no way.... thats so destroying....
and wats an URM? not even liking math and science...thats awkward, unless he/she is planning on majoring in political science/literature.

Accepted!!!!!!!

[/ul]
Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: Really good, I love writing essays and I've won a couple essay contests in the past; I just made sure that they knew two things about me: 1) I'm the kid who loves to get involved, to make things happen instead of watch stuff happen or wonder what happened 2) I've wanted to be an engineer since the 5th grade, and still LOVE engineering!
[]Teacher Recs: Again, really good; My Band Director and AP Stat teacher both know me very well to be crazy motivated, entirely self-motivated, and just generally the kind of kid who loves to dive in head first and get stuff done; My band director describes me as one of the best leaders he's ever had (I feel like I'm bragging now, sorry!)
[]Counselor Rec: Grrrrrrrrrrreat
[]Supplementary Material: None
[]Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): I can articulate my interest and passions for engineering really well; Accordingly, I think my essay and interview are what pushed me over the edge, despite some test scores that aren't as high as others. I love engineering, always have, and I made sure that came through throughout my app process. I'm also really self-motivated, and it seemed like I articulated that well too. [/ul]

[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I'm just so stunned that I got in! I'm really really thankful for this opportunity, and I wish BEST OF LUCK to all deferred! I guess I also just want to be proof to kids out there who don't have perfect SAT scores that you CAN get in, as long as you're honestly passionate and willing to go that extra mile to articulate what your passions are.
[/li]

As an aside, I will totaly be making delicious baked goods for all my teachers and my school's counseling office in thanks.[/ul]

[ *]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: congratulations to everyone who got in!! and for those of you who were deferred, figure out what was missing or what can help show you fit for MIT, and SEND IT! I tried to make sure my essays showed all of the qualities I am most proud of, paying particular attention to those that MIT looks for too. So, if you think you match, show it! and GOOD LUCK to everybody!!! I can't believe I got innnn :-D [ /list]

@njtitans- No, I'm completely serious. Seriously. I still can hardly believe it.

And Jarey, the hypercube reference made my day. Thank you. And I did hear Hari got into Stanford!! Charles is going to Brown, and I think Ian is going to Yale.

Anyways, we should probably just continue this conversation on Facebook...

@tongchen

I'm actually from the northshore (Slidell)- It's just easier to say New Orleans. I went to Pope John Paul II Catholic High before LSMSA.

I'll guess you're not at Franklin- where are you?

so ducktape how does he have your number? and yeah, just how? hahah.

@ njtitans - it was easy - I read her app --> she listed her employer in her app --> she lamented in a comment on my blog that she had to work until 7 --> her employer was pretty easy to find on the web --> problem solved. :-)

Big congrats to all of you who received good news yesterday! And to those of you who were deferred, please don't lose hope! Lots of folks who have been deferred in EA have ultimately been admitted in RA in March, or from the waitlist in May. Remember that unlike many of our peers, we are committed to only admitting 30% of our class in EA. So for each spot that has been filled, there are at least two spots that remain open.

Happy holidays to all!

-B

w00t the reappearance of benjones ! Nice to hear from you again, and good luck with the big push on RA admissions. Happy new year.

Happy new year mootmom! Yeah, the workload in the last couple of months hasn't exactly been supportive of my web addiction. Blogging, CC, facebook... all woefully neglected. I will rise again in '08! :-)
