**OFFICIAL Mt SAC CC TRANSFER THREAD**

hmm okay…

well majoring in a language is great and can be used in a lot of fields :), i plan to try to learn a few more languages. possibly psychology and linguistics

anyways as for what classes to take aside from eng/math
you want to take courses that transfer as GE credit and your major pre-reqs

for UCs and CS’s you follow IGETC
for other schools its a little different. USC has their own thing.

so the vast majority of transfers are aiming towards UCLA/UCB, so im just going to assume youre aiming towards that. go to assist.org and fill it out, you can choose different majors and see what major pre-reqs you will need to transfer.

and as far as med school frowning about other majors, i dont know. but it would seem unlikely if you are accelerating in 2 majors.

all in all, you end up taking the courses youre able to grab. theres no specific order when you have such little choice haha. so take what you can get for now, but make sure they are under IGETC/major pre-reqs.

you should grab an IGETC sheet from mtsac and go from there. that thing is your little map for the next 2 years or so.

ill be in the honors center for this summer, so if you see a chinese guy (almost the whole mtsac student body) with a black camelback backpack, thats me! :)

i usually always wear chucks too. so if you see me, say hi :D

gluck on all ur summer classes. im in the honors center righttt nowwwww…hahaha nerd.

Haha, Where’s the honors center at?

26A 1860 i think…

Hey Dainese, not sure if you got my PM or not, but how do you get involved with student government?

yea i got it and replied :)

basically you’ll hafta wait till elections come around or until a position opens. i believe this is around spring time when officer positions start to open since most ppl transfer.

heads up, there will be a pre-semester meeting for Honors ambassadors!!!

Honor’s Center Tuesday July 13 at 3:00 pm
I’ll be there around 4 pm

try to drop by and say hi :)

Hi! I’m going to be a freshman for this upcoming fall semester and I have a couple of questions to ask. Actually, it just might be a bit more than a couple, but I hope that you guys can lend me a hand because I am freaking out. Haha.

So right now, I’ve only just made my appointment for taking placement tests yesterday and it’s scheduled to be on the 27th. I kind of want to take this at an earlier date (to register as fast as possible!), but I don’t think I can… However, my friend who is also attending Mt. SAC with me in the Fall told me that I don’t necessarily have to make appointments. He was just planning on walking in and taking the tests and orientation all in one day. Is that possible?

And I was thinking about transferring out in one year into a private university out in the east coast without an Associates Degree. So, I was planning on entering as a sophomore… Would this be wise? And will not obtaining my Associates Degree hurt my chances of getting into places like Tufts and Boston College? I kind of just want to get out of California as fast as I can…

I’m also at a loss as to which math placement test I should take. I’ve noticed that some of the science classes have Math 71 as a prerequisite. It doesn’t specifically say “Eligibility for Math 71” or anything like that. Does this mean that I need to take Math 71 prior to taking the class? Or does that mean I have to take the Intermediate Algebra Placement test to prove that I can enter Math 71? Arghh. I’m not really sure what to do. In high school, I took H Geometry, Algebra 2, H PreCalc, AP Calc BC, and AP Stats… And I kind of don’t want to take the Intermediate Algebra Placement test if it means… it’s only going to place me into a Intermediate Algebra class…because I already took it. So, I guess what I’m trying to say is that… if I took the Calculus Placement Test and passed… Does that make up for the Math 71 Prerequisite? Woah. I think I made this a lot more complicated than it actually is.

And I think this is the last question for now… so I was thinking about joining the Honors Program! Is it too late to join? Or can I join anytime?

Hahaha… this was quite a long post. I would really appreciate someone’s help! Anyways, thanks in advance for reading all of this madness.

1.The English test needs an appointment, math tests do not up until a certain point in the summer. Call ahead, the placement center at this time of year is a mad house.-You didn’t mention your reg date though. You must have completed your assessments before you can register. That might motivate you more to get down there and see what you can do.
2. You do not need an AS/AA to transfer out. Most people who transfer do not obtain one. It does not hurt you.
3. It’s not that it is not wise, it is just very hard to transfer out in a year, and most colleges want you to be at junior level. Very few will accept with 30 units, like USC. Transferring in a year at Mt. Sac is really not that attainable atm. You are probably just feeling anxious. So many freshman have the same I want to be out of here now attitude going in. After a semester or so you get a better grip on your future and the reality, and you can plan out your education with less pressure and more clarity.
4. Ok, if a class prerequisite says Eligibility for Math 71, then you must have taken the Intermediate test and passed. If it says Math 71 all by itself, it means that you must have taken and passed the Math 71 class. If you take the College level math test, and you pass, then you bypass the Intermediate math classes, and you can start with the 100 levels right away. So then if a class has a Prereq of Math 71, you have accomplished that without taking the class or that test.
5. I don’t believe so. You need to have a 3.5 GPA, a teacher rec, and an essay right out of HS to be eligible though. After your first sem you need a 3.2,9 transferable units, a teacher req, and an essay. Unless you have a 3.5, then the essay and rec are bypassed.

Take a breath and relax! Everything will work out somehow.

thanks again flutie! :)

but like flutie stated, transferring in 1 year is not easy; but this is directed more towards people without AP credits and people who want to go to UCs/publics. and i see you have AP credits ( those transfer over as credits  ) and want to go to a private.

1 year for a private is easy because most only require 30 units minimum, BUT check to make sure
to put it into perspective: 1 year is 2 semesters and 2 intersessions.
2 semesters (spring/fall) at full time is 24 units
2 intersessions (winter/summer) at full time is 8 units
so in 1 year you can easily obtain 34 units + AP credits

**********EDIT: 12 units a semester is only 3, 4 unit classes and is VERY easy for most honors students.
you should be looking at atleast 4 classes which can vary in units of course. 3 classes is easy, 4 is normal, 5 is managable but busy, 6 is harder depending on the course load, and 7 is just torture. max amount of units you can take is 18 during the semester and anymore than that you need a counselors recommendation to pass it. one of my friends once took 26 units. hes at UCB with a 4.0 and transfered in 1.5 years from singapore into HAAS

if youre transferring to a private, then you can easily transfer over as a sophomore as long as they allow it.
ill be transferring to USC as a late sophomore. the only downside to transferring sophomore year is that you spend more money at the private school.

now if i remember correctly, you will be applying for FALL 2011,
so i believe applications for transfers are around winter and decisions by spring/summer
so make sure you check up on deadlines/dates.
and when you apply you shuold have about 12 units from fall and AP credits
and winter credits and spring 2011 credits that are IP (in progress) adding up to about 30-40

yup and relax! you might end up changing your mind about moving out of cali. theres a long road ahead so just enjoy yourself but get good grades too haha :D

once you get into honors, talk to linda diaz ASAP!!!
best choice of my life.

feel free to come back with more questions

@ Dainese
I’m going to be an incoming freshman this Fall…and can you tell me how easy/difficult it is to get classes as a freshman at Mt. Sac? I recently just cancelled my enrollment with Chapman University because tuition is really expensive…so I barely applied to Mt. sac like all last minute. What if I can’t get the classes I need? What do you recommend doing? (by the way my registration date is on Aug 6th…thats really late…and I do plan on joining the honors program at sac…and also taking classes and doing the same at PCC)

hey :)

its extremely competitive and stressful to get classes as a freshman unless you get some sort of priority registration; whether that be connect 4, EOPS, or something…

you will get classes that you will need, but you will have to be VERY VERY persistent.
i recommend trying to add classes that are not impacted such as social sciences, some foreign languages, arts, humanities, and some other GEs.

so by the time your registration date comes around, you will have probably no classes open for you. what you do is figure out which classes you want to take anyway, make a list of them (including whcih profs you want/time slots/days) make sure none of them conflict. once you have taht list completed…CONSTANTLY and i mean CONSTANTLY, check and recheck trying to add your name to the waitlist of the classes you want.

diligence and patience!

thats about all you can do without priority registration. refresh/try to waitlist or add/pray

and do the same for PCC
one of the members on this forum was also a first time freshie and he managed to get both classes he needed for the summer through lots of refreshing.

best of luck to you. if school starts and you still arent waitlsited or added to any classes, go to the class and try to add.

and in worse case scenario of not getting anything at all…then i dont know what to tell you :frowning: but this will not be tthe case, youi will have atleast 2 classes in WCS.

if you are in the walnut school district, do connect 4 and you’ll get priority registration
once you start school also try to be an athlete or do student gov and youll get priority :D

Heyo, so I’m back again, now with fall freshman classes.
Looks like I’ll be taking
English 1C
Astronomy + Lab
Math 140 (Calculus for non-science majors)
Mus 13
and I took Phil 15 in the summer.
Assuming I maintain a 4.0, how many credits over the limit are counselors likely to approve for winter/spring?

thats a good amount of classes you got there!

good job haha

you are in honors right? because i believe linda can approve of the units.
and she will probably approve as much as you are willing to handle :)

if not, taking more than 2 classes during winter/summer is difficult anyway…

but for spring/fall i know people who have been approved for 26 units with a 4.0
its all about how much you want to handle

Just mailed off my Honors application a few days ago, hoping to get approval so I can fiddle around with my classes to squeeze in an honors or two.

Oh, also, is there any way other than EOPS to get priority registration for Winter/Spring? I got it in Fall through Connect - 4, but I’m worried about the later sessions.

you shuolda just dropped the application in person and you could have been cleared right away for honors classes lol. its okay though, fall wont be for a while.

as for early registration, other than EOPS/connect 4 there is student government and being an athelete for the school. otherwise you fight for spots like everyone else :(

Does student court count as student gov.?

not quite sure what student court is…

I guess it would be comparable to the Supreme Court in the relation that A.S. is to U.S Government
