**OFFICIAL Mt SAC CC TRANSFER THREAD**

yea ive also heard that citrus is easier. if you have a good start at citrus already, keep at it. just dont end up falling into the CC stereotype. :)

Thanks Dainese for answering my questions again (:
… But I have more… LOL and some other random things I want to mention…

  • I decided to take your advice and add a 5th class into my fall 2010 schedule- Biol13
  • I’m not very confident with my knowledge&skill in chem right now so I think its alright if I just start out with Chem40-- but thanks for the info about the placement test  !
  • I didn’t place in Engl 1CH automatically from the placement test, in fact, I’m not sure if I’m even gonna take that class since everything relies on my score from my AP Lit exam D: So if I get anything below a 2 gulp– it’s Engl 68 for me! D’:
    Questions:
  1. The counselor told me that in the honors program, I need to take 6 honors classes “ONLY” but would it look better on my transcript if I took more? Or does it really not matter?
  2. And speaking of honors classes, how hard are they compared w/ the AP classes in HS? And how hard compared to the reg classes @ Mt. Sac?
  3. With transferring to a UC or USC and such, what is the avg. # of units a student admitted has?
  4. And on units… I totaled up the # of units all my classes that I am PLANNING to take in the next 2 years and it’s 105-- is that a good amount? Or too much? Or too little? D:
  5. And the registration process work… on the day of our registration, do we pick all our classes ASAP before other people take up the spot? <– Basically, I’m asking, is it like madness on the registration page D:?!
  6. Is there a Red Cross club on campus? LOL or what other med/health- related clubs are there… and are clubs even a big thing at Mt. Sac like they were in HS?
  7. Do colleges still care about ECs for transfers anymore LOL… ):
Thanks thanks thanks for your time and help! :D

WT F 105 units in 2 yrs? lol You’re adding wrong haha

Yes you should pick out classes ASAP because it can be gone any second…

You’re limited to 70 transferable units that a UC or Cal State will take. After 70, they may or may not accept further units. And it they do, it’s usually only a few. You need to have completed half of your degree at that school. So, taking 105 units is a waste of time/money. They probably stick to 70 in most cases.

Sac holds two club fairs every year during the Fall and Spring Semesters, and are usually about a month into the Semester. The club scene isn’t that big of a deal, but it is there and lively enough.

You can take more than 6 Honors Classes, and it looks nice, but it’s not that necessary. The same with EC’s. They look nice and certainly can not hinder you, but if you have a strong GPA, all the right classes and a Tap/Tag certification, you’re pretty golden.

I took AP all through high school too, and I’ve found the Honors classes to be not that difficult. Some are genuinely difficult, but that depends on the teacher and subject. You’ll be fine! Remember that not all of your classes will be honors every Sem. You might only have one or two balanced out with the regular classes. Very manageable.

Registration is absolute insanity. Your backup classes need their own backup classes. Have several different schedules worked out and be flexible. Your first Sem is bad, but once you get your foot in the door it gets better. Wait list will either help you or hinder you. If all else fails, keep showing up to a class. Really. If you show up every class meeting for two-three weeks they will add you. It’s a joke how many students drop throughout the semester. Be prepared to pay for your classes immediately as well. If you don’t pay pretty much ASAP, you will be dropped.

I know Dainese is going to come and add his own wisdom to your Q’s, but until then I’ve offered up my own experiences.

haha flutie basically covered it all. ill just add in some tidbits. (you know me too well)
and thanks for helping me answer these questions. its always nice to have other views and mtsac students helping future ones :)

only need a minimum of 6 to graduate/transfer with honors. anymore may help, but certainly wont hurt.

flutie got that covered. i never took AP classes lol! :)

flutie covered. as for USC, they will only take 64 and ull be a junior. and USC is a completely different GE setup, so check up on it.

105 units can be realistic if youre a science major. but 105 is usually overkill. and like flutie already said, not all 105 will transfer, only X amount will.

it is madness. blackmamba has first has experience already haha
best thing you can do it get priority registration by joining student gov, athlete for the school, or having a learning disability.

flute covered it, ill add more info. caduceus club is the big medical club on campus. its a fairly large club but they meet at 7 AM on…fridays i think. but who wants to wake up at 7 AM… :(

when i first started honors ambassadors (honors club) i was an ICC representative. (inter club council) basically all the clubs on the campus send 1/2 representatives to talk about events/info/meeting times. and when i first started the ICC meetings consisted of only 20 clubs or so. but since i left, the clubs on campus have gotten so popular and large that we’ve had to move to a bigger room and there are well over 40 clubs now.

clubs were MUCH more popular this year, hopefully it continues to grow.
I personally think being in the right club does make you look better as a transfer applicant. one of my fellow classmates founded a club (circle K) and she won a 30k scholarship. I help founded honors ambassadors and ill be starting USC. clubs to consider are ones that apply to your major or ones that serve the community.

heres a few
AGS (alpha gamma sigma) - lots of volunteer work
Honors Ambassadors - spreading honors awareness to the community
Caduceus - medical club
Business club - self explanatory
SIFE - great for business
Psychology club - self explan.

theres a bunch of others that are based on common interests as well IE anime club, chinese club, salsa club etc.

this really depends on the significance of the EC and the school. privates REALLY care about ECs. Publics dont care so much. UCs are based on stats, if you have the right stats you usually are in. If youre borderline then MAYBE they look at your ECs. ECs are more for scholarships and privates. But i highly recommend getting a list you are comfortable applying with.

my EC list for USC

  • vice pres and ICC rep for Honors ambassadors
  • human trafficking conference
  • high school outreach ambassador/conference
  • 1 letter of rec from my psych prof (im a psych major)
  • conducted psych research and presented it

cant think of anything else right now…but you get it.

thanks blackmamba, flutiefruit & dainese!!
AUGH THATS WONDERFUL!! That I only need to take around 70!!! I was like UUUGH when I thought I had to take 100+ and tried to figure out how I would smoosh all the classes into 2 years length… [Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2010 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof10_mjr.htm#SON)
^^^ if you scroll down to the bottom, it shows the avg # of units the transfer students who were admitted into the nursing prelicense program had… it’s like 106 D:

  1. Is there a reason why the #'s so high when I only really need around 70 units o___o;; sweats
I’m thinking of starting a club @ Mt. Sac too  And of course joining the med/health related ones (: And volunteer at the local hospitals… I hope that is a good amount of ECs…
  2. How hard is it to become officer of a club? I’ve been officer in a lot of clubs in HS but it took a lot of work and effort to get to those positions ): So I’m wondering if the clubs @ Mt. Sac will require the same amount of effort LOOOL… ToT’’
  3. & does anyone know the date where fall registration begins?
THANKS SO MUCH TOT I love how you guys answer my questions so fast too!! TY TY TY TY!!!

its the major. so 100 + may be realistic for you…but your best plan to is get an appointment with linda diaz and confirm this. she knwos the ins outs lefts rights and wrongs.

pretty ez, make an impression and once officer positions are open, you usually just say a short speech and they vote.

july 19th

[Mt. San Antonio College Academic Calendar](Academic Calendar)

all your dates are there :)

Where I plan to transfer to: UCLA or USC
Major: Applied as Undeclared but i’m set on Biochemistry
GPA: 2.9ish? Man I failed high school big time. I didn’t really turn around till Senior year when I decided that it is my dream to go into Med school.
High School: Diamond Bar High (DBHS)

Thanks Dainese. I actually went through all 12 pages of this thread. A lot of very precious knowledge! I’m currently part of the Connect4 program so I will most likely be receiving a letter in the mail about my orientation and registration dates very soon. I will also be retesting for placement into English 1A next week. I am also on the ENGLISH 68 boat! As for other placement test results I have placed in MATH140 and MATH180. I will most likely be using my AP score to place myself in an even higher level math course.

I’m sure i’ll have even more questions in the future, but thanks for all the information provided thus far!

1) Currently i’m baffled as to what courses I should enroll in on registration day. I know that 5 courses should be a minimum (have to take advantage of my priority registration!). I have done research on what courses I need to take using this handy site http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/lsmajors/biochem.htm</a>. I have also tried using assist.org , but I cannot find Biochemistry under UC transferable courses. What do I do to get more information on what courses I need to take for my major?

2) I still need to take the chemistry placement test. Do you have any tips on reviewing for it? I haven’t touched Chemistry since Sophomore year of high school and i’m afraid I might be unprepared for it. Unfortunately I did not pass my Chemistry AP test (I know, what a waste of a class right??).

haha cool!
im glad this thread is growing with more peeps. be sure to send friends over if they have questions :)

im glad i can help. but as time goes on, my information will be outdated, so i hope some of you will gladly help future transfer students :D

onto your questions…

1.) 5 classes to take advantage of…English, math, science. those 3 subjects are THE most impacted. so if you place into 1A, get Eng 1A, Math 180, a science + lab, and another science if you think you can handle it. this should be about…17 units or so. remember maximum amount of units you can take is 18. anymore you will need a recommendation from a counselor. so if you find urself going over the 18 unit limit, find a counselor at sac and tell he/she that you are determined, or better yet, show it.

if i were you, id take all 5 classes and see how it is. drop a class if you need to. do NOT overwork yourself. its not a race, trust me…dont do it haha. as long as you transfer within a reasonable amount of time, you are good to go.

the site you found is extremely vague haha…its really telling you very limited info. I think you may be looking in the wrong area for assist. here is what you want. i found biochem for you

[ASSIST Report: MTSAC 09-10 UCLA Articulation Agreement by Major](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)

looks like u have a handful of pre-reqs. so knock out those.
and if you qualify for eng 1A, id def consider joining honors. despite your low highschool GPA, if you show an upward trend there is a possibility of getting in. just dont get your hopes up.

2.) i honestly dont remember what was on the chem test…but when you make your appointment for it, they do give you a sheet of subjects that will be tested. what i did was go to the LAC (learning assistance center) and had one of the tutors teach me these subjects. i failed the test by 2 points and havent taken chem for…almost 3 years. just review it to the best of your ability and try the pass. if you dont pass, take it again another time.

an example of your fall classes could be…eng 1A, math 180, bio 1, chem 50, and a lab class.
this is if you pass all your placement tests. if you fail chem then…
eng 1a, math 180, bio 1, chem 40 and lab.

there are a lot of combination of classes you can take. take a look at the assist link and take your pick. if you need help deciphering it, lmk. basically the courses on the right side are the ones that are the ones you need. if it says OR then you have a choice. if theres no OR then you take all of the ones listed in that box.

if you dont pass i suggest waiting 3 months then taking it again. just make sure you remember all the concepts that were on the test. if you know youre gonna fail, atleast make sure you memorize everything on it haha. (sort of cheating but…more like taking advantage of the system :P)

anyways gluck!
lmk if you have more Qs.

edit: sorry, if you plan to go to USC, its a totally different GE/major pre-reqs requirements.

USC:Transfer Planning Guide;

theres the USC curriculum you need. you only need 30 units to transfer over. so gluck!
biochem is listed under BS - biochem

Hmm I might consider doing that and go to the learning assistance center and try and get some help for chem and try and pass the test. I think Im majoring in biochemistry as well. :D

cool beans :)

hope you peeps pass. if anything dont be discouraged and take it again or just go through chem 40.

glcuk to u all!!!

okay so I wrote down my list for possible classes. I’m going to put classes in the worst case scenario (If fail the writing and chem placement tests)

1) ENG68 (3 units)
2) Chem40 (4 units)
3) Bio1 (4 units)
4) Phys2AG (4 units) - prerequisite for phys4A which is a course for my major
5) Math180 (4 units)

Out of all the 5 courses i’ve chosen, only 1 knocks out a prereq to my major (Bio1). Should I be worried?

I’m still confused on the whole lab thing. It lists that Bio, Physics, and Chem are courses that include labs? does that mean i’m taking 3 labs courses?? That is too much to handle i’m sure.

so i’m totaling 19 units so far, there will be even more units if I place in MATH181, ENG1A and Chem50. Thats over 18 units, am I doing something wrong?. If I do place in Math181, Eng1A and Chem50, that would total 22 units, so I could decide not to take one class and that would leave me with exactly 17 or 18 units.

nope nothings wrong. if want over 18, talk to a counselor asap and get the permission to take more.

ur list sounds accurate if you fail placement tests and no you should not be wrried.

you only need 1 lab for IGETC. but if it indicates on the link that it requires all 3, then you might have to take all 3. lab is only usually 1 unit. but be sure to check with someone like linda diaz…cuz im not 100 percent sure on that :(

it does sound like too much though.

nothings wrong. my friend has tackled 26 units before. 4.0 student whos goin to berkely.

well I looked under the MT. SAC course catalog to check all their descriptions…

For example:

will that help?

and what is IGETC?

Also, I already see people scheduling orientations. Am I behind already??

I hope they’re talking about summer orientations because I know I should be notified by mail for my orientation.

yea then they include lab. some sciences have lab as a separate course, but in those cases it seems to be included

and i dont think ur behind on orientation, summer hasnt even started. and fall is no where near yet
just get done with it asap. its boring haha

ok well i’m lost i dont have a clue on what to take other than the english 68 and math…i need help and when i went to counseling that lady didnt help me at all!!! ok so i dont know much about my schedule, you guys have any tips on figuring out? Any advice would help. thanks!

another problem:ok i was rechecking my account i cant seem to find my financial aid anymore, did they take it away?

@nikki - ill answer your question with more questions, then we can get an answer haha
whats your major? what school do you want to transfer too? placement test scores?
sorry if youve already posted it.

and if ur fin aid is missing now…id call in and see if its just a problem. i think more than likely its just a bug in the system and it will reappear soon. but call to make sure.

i got into english 68 and math umm i cant remember but its the one before the last one in order to transfer…sorry i tend to forget things, as for my major thats a toughie i mean i want to do bio (i want something in relation to med stuff), but i took bio ap this year and i found it really boring…i was wondering if i could major in like a language, but i hear that schools frown upon that if i want anything to do with med school. I really appreciate the help.
