**OFFICIAL Mt SAC CC TRANSFER THREAD**

No no, the process you use if you register there is the same as online. It’s just a late registration date and most of the primo classes are already filled.

yup…what jetlogic said is correct. even if you went in person theyd just send you to a computer to do it online lol.

you can pay for fees online as well. make sure to buy a parking permit!

and no…unfortunately you cannot register earlier than that so make sure you make a lot of back up plans because you will need too…
most importantly, enjoy the east coast! make sure to visit NYU! :D

Hey guys! I have a few question as well… I’ll be attending SAC this fall and I’m having trouble figuring out what classes to take for my GE reqs. I want to transfer to USC as a sophomore and want to double major in business and computer science. If anyone has information/previous experiences on the credits that will transfer, I’d definitely appreciate it.

Holkey:

Hi. I am not attending the same CC but l’ll try to help.

I received a Pell award, so I had to declare a major w/the school.
Usually you donot have to do that until Jr. year.
At my schools website you click on the tab for
Associate degrees, them click on majors. It will then list the
classess to choose from.

On the school website they will also have the GE req for the UC’s-or USC; also if
you are not transfering;you just want an. Aa or AS.

For double major there is usually only a few extra classess
that u have to take. BUT…

The majors you listed, it might be a bit more complicated. Plus you state that
U wabt to transfer as a Soph.

You should def. speak / a counsler and the school u want to attend.

My school already has started open reg.(I also had a priority).
Also @ my JC u can go the school now to mee with a counsler(walk in only now).

Remember some schools and majors do not acceptIGETC.

Hope this helped and good luck.

Thanks for the reply endaxi. I still want to see what Dainese says because Dainese went to SAC =p

hey holkey

lets see…where to start. if you know you are dead set on USC, then you can throw IGETC out the window and start on USC’s GE curriculum.

heres a link. USC:Transfer Planning Guide;

basically you’ll hafta cover 6 categories of GEs but mtsac only can do 4 out of the 6 which is good enough. and in that list are your major pre-reqs as well.

when you apply to USC you should declare a major on the application. but doing this might make getting in harder esp for business (marshall). I know plenty of students who get into USC as undeclared or as another major and switch over to marshall while they are in USC…BUT usc has caught onto it and made it much more difficult to do so…so its a risk you take now.

both viterbi and marshall are very competitive schools to be going into
heres the 2010 acceptances for USC

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/904974-usc-transfer-decisions-2010-official-thread.html</a></p>

all stats/majors/schools are posted.

lastly, dont wrry about double majoring yet. if you want you can try to knock out a few major pre-reqs at mtsac if its possible, but if you are transferring only after 1 year dont expect to kill off everything. no matter what you have to do 4 years unless you have AP scores haha.

i transferred with 50 units in 1.5 years but i still need to spend 2.5 years at USC.
my friend got in with 60+ units in 1 year from AP credits and she is probably only spending 2 years.

ive also heard USC loves seeing art hsitory classes for their GE’s so i actually took 2 haha
make sure you add up your EC list as well.

For anyone looking at this thread, if you’re serious about college and transferring, TALK TO LINDA DIAZ.
I talked to her today and she was a huge help with facilitating everything that had to do with my transfer. I couldn’t recommend her more.

linda is our savior. seriously.

Thanks Steve, but i have more questions… =X sorry. I really don’t know which classes I should take that can make me a better candidate. What English class should I take that will look impressive, and be transferrable? Since I got a 1700 on my SATS, do i have to take a placement test for higher maths, english classes? Etc. USC states that we need a western culture class and art class. Does philosopy count as an art? Sorry for all the questions that I’m sure you’ve already answered. I just moved to San Antonio from Cerritos, California btw so I’m kind of new to everything here.

Holk:

I know u would rather have Dainese reply(& I am sure he will) but to make it easier for him …

-u should take(& are probably req) to take placement test re English and math unless u have AP’s. This needs to be done ASAP.

Re western culture/phil
AREA C:2010&2011 CSU GE REQ PATTERN ARTS&HUMMANITIES
9 units req: 3 courses: ATLEAST 1 from art and 1 from Humm

NO; phil is not art. The classess listed under art would be something like:

Art;music;dance. If u look at your schools program guide for CSU GE REQ pattern they will list the classes that are acceptable.(Or at least they should).

For example @ my school I have the option of art 1.1 1.2 2.1 etc;music 6,7…

I think u get the idea. My major is religious studies(double history). I am taking art 2.1 this sememster. By taking this class I will fill a regGE req and a req in my major.(Note: I am following IGETC but with my double in history, I can take the speech class and basically not have to worry since I don’t know what school I am going to. Ill be clear either way. But they do suggest doing IGETC if your not sure; although the diff is +speech, history and pols for CSU; +languase for UC and classess are supose to be a bit diff # wise.)

Anyway, what are u gonna major in? What do u mean by buisiness? The reason I ask is usually a business major at the CC level is not gonna do the “reg” GE’s. Most of the reg courses are …biz classess. U only do s few “reg” GE’s. I also do not think people usually double major-maybe a minor.
So u need to think about it. Do u evetually want an MBA? Or would u rather do CS and take a few biz or economics classess?

What u need to do:

U need to get a hold of your schools program guide.

U need to look a the CSU GE PATTERN REQ for your school(that will list all the claasses accetable; then choose classes that U LIKE; and one that will knock out a GE and a major GE.

Again though u need to figure out if u are applying a a biz major or CS major.

Get those placement tests ASAP; go to your campus ASAP and speak with a counsler.

I wish u all the best(& sorry if my post is a bit confusing; its a b++++ trying to type on this phone).

np. and thanks endaxi
what he said about placement tests is very true. take it ASAP.

we’ll start in order

classes that make you the best candidate are all major pre-reqs and all GE’s completed. but of course thats not achievable so we do the next best thing.

do as many GE categories as you can and as many major pre-reqs before applying or in progress.

the only transferrable lower division english class GE is ENG 1C. yes you do have to still take placement tests for math/eng.

and heres another link that will better explain what classes fulfill “western culture” and the “arts”

Error;

so as you can see theres GE categories 1,2,3,5, diversity and english
i dont think you need a language for business.
and no. phil wont fulfill the arts. but PHIL 20A/B will satisfy western cultures and PHIL 9 will satisfy english

heres an example of courses i took for psychology

CATEGORY I: Western Cultures and Traditions
AHIS 4H

CATEGORY II: Global Cultures and Traditions
AHIS 9

CATEGORY III: Scientific Inquiry (requires a lab)
Not done yet

CATEGORY V: Arts and Letters
ENG 1BH and MUS 12 (but mus 12 wont work for you since its no longer transferable.)

LOWER DIVISION WRITING REQUIREMENT:
ENG 1CH

DIVERSITY:
PSYCH 25 and SOC 1

lastly…join the honors program if you havnt already and complete honors. they have LOTS of oppurtunity for you to build your application and the best counselor is available ONLY to honors students. her name is LINDA DIAZ. every counselor/advisor at mtsac knows little to nothing about transferring…(trust me, you are better off asking me.)

i should hold a transfer work shop haha…

PS. Phil is under hummanities for the GE req area 3

i think you are referring to IGETC. and unfortunately USC’s GE curriculum is completely different from IGETC :(

edit: yea, im looking at IGETC now. IGETC is for UC’s. USC has its own transfer articulation agreement.
so unfortunately many people pursuing USC have to take that risk of taking a bunch of classes that dont work for UC’s. its USC or bust.

Let me also add that I am going to SRJC. There set-up is sooooo much better. Under the majors u can print up a worksheet; they all the classes laid out very easily. U can click on the course #; it ver nice.

Dainese, u should def get someone at MTSAC to look at the SRJC website and see how they list the majors/classess.

yea its quite a convenient system. i know UCs and some privates will provide a course layout for you…but im not too familiar with anything outside of USC/UC’s haha

but UC’s and USC do have worksheets of courses needed to be taken that can be printed out :)

btw i have a friend whos at masters right now

thanks a lot guys. Basically, I should take those placement tests before i choose my classes? Correct? Or should I choose the classes I can now and take the placement tests to see what type of math/ english I qualify for?

Dainese,

Do u mean MAster’s College?
How does he like it?
Did he get a good FA package?
(U don’t have to ask him)

Honkey:

U should be looking at all the classess.
U might not even be able to get an English or math class this semester.

But take those placement tests!!!

yup take them asap.tomorrow if possible!
make sure you have a list of classes/profs/time slots that work together and make 10 back up plans cuz registration si tough!

he likes masters, and yea masters college.
im not sure about his FA pacakge, ill ask him but i never really see him.
im sure he loves it, they recently sent him to south africa (i think) for some volunteer work

Dainese,

No. It’s just that w/my school the classess or under hummanities; your school list them as “western culture.”

Also @ my school its pretty easy to know which classess transfer.

EX:

1-49 transfer to UC’& CSU

Class Numbered 1-99 will transfer to CSU’s
(The higher #'s 50-99 will not transfer for UC’s)

Classess 1-299 is acceptable for those seeking only a degree; AA or AS
