**OFFICIAL Mt SAC CC TRANSFER THREAD**

haha cool thanks for clarifying and nope getting into honors is by GPA.

so come to sac, accumulate 9 transferrable units (which can be done in 1 semester easily) and maintain a 3.2 or higher and you are in!
id recommend keeping it at a 4.0 haha

the placement tests will just, well…place you into a course that is reasonable.

there are 3 placement tests 1 of which not everyone knows about.
theres MATH, ENGLISH, and CHEM

rarely do ppl know about CHEM so if you do decide to want to skip intro to chem, then pass the placement test and ur good.

Where I plan to transfer to: ULCA…
Major:Biology
GPA: do you mean gpa in highschool? 3.6
High School: RHS

so for the past 4 hours, i have been looking over sites and sites to answer my questions, yet only a few were answered. hopefully im not bothering you or annoying you. so here it goes.

 1. i want to take a biology class for the summer of 2010. is this possible? will it be credited? do i need to take a placement test for this?
 2. since i want to transfer into UCLA, how would i know what classes i need to take during the 2 years of CCC? is there a program i can be in to be able to transfer to UCLA? if so, how do i apply?
 3. how do i know what are the requirements to transfer into UCLA?
 4. If im applying for classes for the Fall of 2010 over at Mt. Sac, do i need to take my placement test ASAP?
 5. how do i know when to make appointments for registration?
 6. when i applied for the summer of 2010 at mt.sac, i had to pick a major, so i picked “Transfer- Biology”, is that correct? or did i make a mistake? since i figured, if i plan on transferring to UCLA & want to be in a Biology major, why not click “Transfer-Biology” lol

hmmm thats all the questions that i can think of at the moment. i give props to the people who made it through college or survived. i feel like giving up because i have no idead whatsoever what to do before deadlines, or when deadlines are. ):

it would be so much to me if someone helped me out ): lol

lol uve come to the right place.

i want to take a biology class for the summer of 2010. is this possible? will it be credited? do i need to take a placement test for this?

yup and it will be credited. no placement test. however…getting a bio class is nearly impossible for first time freshmen because you will have such a late registration date. BUT you are more than welcome to try anyway. but dont be disappointed if u dont get it. its really hard.

since i want to transfer into UCLA, how would i know what classes i need to take during the 2 years of CCC? is there a program i can be in to be able to transfer to UCLA? if so, how do i apply?

[Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) will tell you everything about what classes you need to transfer over for any major.

basically, completing all your GE’s (IGETC) and major pre-requisites is all you need.
there is no guaranteed transfer to UCLA/CAL; however there is TAP transfer alliance program which gives you a step up on regular applicants.

i highly recommend joining the honors program at SAC. if you dont you will regret it. LOL!

how do i know what are the requirements to transfer into UCLA?

again, assist.org.

If im applying for classes for the Fall of 2010 over at Mt. Sac, do i need to take my placement test ASAP?

you do not need to take them ASAP, but it is better to do so. because once summer starts if you get a class you will be busy. and once fall starts you’re too late. and if you do it b/t summer/fall semester then you are battling all the other applicants for an appointment to take the placement tests; therefore, you SHOULD take the placement tests ASAP for 3 reasons: 1, all your hs education is still fresh 2, you dont have to battle/worry about gettin an appointment 3 if you dont place where you want you can take the test again in 3 months i think.

how do i know when to make appointments for registration?

Once uve applied and claimed your online account, when spring is about to end, you should get a notification saying when your summer registration date is. they usually dont email so you have to check yourself on your “myportal”

when i applied for the summer of 2010 at mt.sac, i had to pick a major, so i picked “Transfer- Biology”, is that correct? or did i make a mistake? since i figured, if i plan on transferring to UCLA & want to be in a Biology major, why not click “Transfer-Biology” lol

yea that is correct. you really dont have to specific what major you are at sac anyway. im still “undecided” at sac haha. but im a psych major.

and btw BIO is obviously an impacted major, so id recommend picking a major along the lines of bio. and once you join honors (which you will if you want to go to UCLA bio) then make an appointment with LINDA DIAZ ASAP. she will make your life 100000000000000000000000000000000000000 times easier. trust me. best decision of your life.

Alright so i logged into my portal just now and summer 2010 showed up… but I got this message…
“You have not been assigned a Registration date/time for this term. Registration dates will be assigned no later than two weeks prior to the beginning of every term. If you believe you have received this message in error, please visit the Office of Admissions and Records.”
"You have Holds which will prevent registration. "

I clicked holds and two items showed up.

 1. Orientation Hold 2. Special Admit & College Starte

So I have to do those two items before I can get a registration date?

I have to do placement tests before orientation right? Crap I’m lagging it… =( I have and really want to take something in the summer. I called the assessment center and they told me math and reading are walk in and english and chemistry are appointment. Do I have to take all 4 tests before I can register (math, reading, english, and chemistry)?

Nvm. I called and got hold #2 “special admit” removed. Some error.

oops double post

ahh okay so first…you cant register for summer classes because its simply not time. but secondly WHEN the time comes you need to make sure you get rid of that orientation hold, which is probably done by you attending some sort of mtsac orientation.

so yes you have to finish both, or one now haha.

and no you dont have to take placement tests before orientation. you dont even have to take placement tests, they are there to help place you into your appropriate level class.

but do take them asap, cuz the longer you wait, the more freshmen come and the more people you fight for appointments.

MATH is a must. there are 3 lvls of placement tests which will be explained to you when you go in. (basic algebra, college algebra, and calc …something along those lines) so take the one which seems fitting.

CHEM is not a must, but if u want to skip CHEM 40 (intro to chem) take it.

READING is for…nothing really. very few ppl take it, mostly foreigners i believe. i didnt take it.

ENGLISH is also a must. your goal is to place into ENG 1A or higher. if you dont place into ENG 1A, dont worry. i placed into eng 68. it goes…ENG 67, 68, 1A, 1C.

anything below 1A is NOT transferable which is why you want to get into 1A

lastly, yes and no. you have to qualify with the placement test scores for some classes but others you dont. for example…if you want to take MATH 180 (calc) you have to pass the placement test for calc. otherwise you cant take it without taking lower level math and building ur way up.

same for english and chem. cant take eng 1C without taking eng 67/68/1A or placing into ENG 1C

^ Thanks for the info. Appreciate it. English seems somewhat simple… just an essay ( i better not underestimate it though lol). Math Im gonna take the Calc one.

Hello,
I’ve been reading your post and they seem very helpful
I’m in a different boat and want to know some things if you can help.
I am taking courses at Mt. Sac to transfer to Univ. of LaVerne for my Masters (cheaper to take some classes here then transfer ;)). I already have a B.A. in Spanish so I didnt have classes geared towards business (going for M.B.A). Would I still be able to do Honors? Does everyone have to take the placement? I only need about 5 classes. I took some basic math in college and I am taking Stats now. Which GPA would I go off of?
Thanks!

@angarcia- oo thats a little harder. ill try to answer it but you should def not rely on it 100 percent haha

heres what i see. you have a BA in spanish already; therefore you should have most/all GE’s already done.
secondly, you are now pursuing a MBA so you get to SKIP GE’s this time around and jump directly into major pre-reqs.
and since you are already taking stats then i would see no need to take the math placement test UNLESS you feel you can place into a higher math course *IE MATH 180+. not everyone needs to take it, it is not required.

And as long as your GPA is above a 3.2 you can join honors. if its like a 2.9-3.1 GPA, I would still encourage you to apply and talk to carolyn kuykendall (director of honors program). because you have a BA already and so many units a lower GPA may be more reasonable as long as you show you are willing to pull it up. BUT BUT BUT since you only need 5 more classes, I DONT think that honors will be necessary (nor would it help) because you need to take 6 honors courses to graduate/transfer with honors and you cannot retake courses youve already taken. on the contrary, some colleges may like to see your going back into pursing another degree but this time around taking honors courses. so in the end, id still advise you to apply.

what 5 classes do you need? all math?

and im not sure what youre asking in the last question “Which GPA would I go off of?”
can you be mroe specific please?
-i think the answer is which ever GPA is transferable.

if its still unclear, feel free to ask more!
if anything, if i cant answer your question i can direct you to someone who most certainly can :)

@blackmamba - i believe on the english test they are looking for grammar, sentence structure, idea organization, and use of correct vocab for the essay. dont be disappointed if you dont place into 1A. my gf from IB placed into 68 and shes a way better writer than me… but if you do get into 1A, congrats!

All English placement tests are booked for April. Now I gotta wait till May. =( Gotta get this done asap. Shouldnt have waited. smh

PCC’s placement testing is all walk in during the weekday. Guess they have more people working and more people taking it.

I saw on mt sac website that registration for summer 2010 begins May 17th. http://www.mtsac.edu/schedule/credit/summer/</a> Is that for first time freshmen?

Is orientation and meeting with counselor different?

damn…ouch :frowning:
yea these mtsac students are determined folk haha.

yea may 17th is the beginning of registration. and june 28 is the end for ALL mtsac students

so you will get a registration date from may 17-june 28. somewhere in between.
usually freshman get really late registration dates, so yours may be around june 20 and up.

i honestly dont know what orientation even is…i never did it LOL
i would believe that orientation is like a seminar type thing
while meeting with a counselor is simply meeting with one on one with a counselor to help you plan out your 2 years

i think you’ll have to call to find out.

btw when your taking your placement tests, be sure to grab a summer class booklet if its available at the time so you can plan ahead what classes you want ahead of time. do not underestimate what it means to be a freshmen haha. get a 1st choice class, then 2nd, then 3rd, and go up to atleast a 7th or 8th. im not kidding. last thing you want to do is put yourself in a situation where your panicking to get a class and a good prof.

i suggest using ratemyprofessor.com but ive had experiences where the teachers tend to be the opposite of what they are rated as. If you need suggestions for profs for certain classes i can def recommend serveral. but for the most part, ratemyprof is atleast something.

Made an appointment for orientation earlier today. Earliest appointment was May 10th. Damn. Crazy.

So I would have to make an appointment to meet with a counselor? Do I get to choose who to meet with?

Yea I heard about ratemyprofessor.com. Will def hit you up when I decide what class Im gonna take haha

if its mandatory to meet with a counselor then yes you have to make an appointment and yes you can choose who you want.

but if its optional dont do it. most of them dont know anything helpful. the best counselor is linda diaz, but you need to be in honors to speak with her. so finish 9 transferable units and go to her. no counselor can compare. for example…for my cousin went to mtsacs counselors and they didnt even tell him about the honors program, nor did they tell me. and ive seen probably 3 counselors at sac already just to see if i had one bad experience. all 3 sucked. skip it if you can. its a waste of time.

Dont think its mandatory but I’ll see…

I wanna get some advice on what class I should take so yea I’ll prolly go see a random counselor and see what they say.

haha gl.

yea its not mandatory. make sure they give you the IGETC class list. good luck again!

Hehe thanks for all the advice Dainese! Redirected here in case I have any other questions :p

I’m taking my placement tests tomorrow crosses fingers so yup! Lucky WHS does these for us b/c apparently the other schools don’t have such priority. Still have to get rid of that orientation thing… -_-"

good luck!!!

dont forget to grab a summer 2010 catalogue haha

I have to come here in the fall… U__U
I got my results back for the placement tests… everything seems fine but… the English level I was put in REALLY shocked me… it’s ENGL 68… I thought I would get 1A at least or something D: cos I’ve been taking English honors since my freshman year (did well in them!) of HS and I’m currently in AP Lit (ENGL 68 is PREP for college writing but I’m already in college writing!!!) and doing well D: So when I saw my score I thought I was going to burst into tears D:
Is there anyway I can be bumped up to English 1A?
Thanks! :D

@sunny - ud hafta retake the test but that would be another 3 months.

what you could try…not guaranteeing anything…is to talk to the head guy of the placement tests. i dont remember his name…but you know how you test in that huge room with all the computers… his office is the one right across from that room to the left a little. hes hispanic and is really cool. youd hafta appeal and explain your situation but if anything they will give you another chance to take the test. and if you place into 68 again then…err hahahaha embarassing x.x

my gf got placed into 68 and did IB throughout hs and was considered a good writer. i placed into 68 and barely graduated hs. the placement tests for eng are really weird. all i can really suggest you do is to talk to the head guy. not really sure how youd go about doing so though. :frowning: ask? haha…really nicely…

he let me retake a math placement test when i got caught “cheating.” i wasnt aware that i couldnt use a calculator. but i got to take it again in a week and passed.

his office has a UCLA flag in it i think. gl!

if that doesnt work out then…just do 68 and do 1A later. :(
