oh yea…another solution is that you could take the english placement test at another CC (PCC OCC SMC etc) and do eng 1a there haha :D

^^^ Thanks!
Well… if I HAVE to do Engl 68, then does that mean I do it for only one quarter or something and then go into Engl 1a or is this a year-round class?
And I think I’m going into the honors program so does this ENGL 68 stuff really matter then?

all classes are only a semester/intersession long. so if you take eng 68 this summer then you can join honors in the fall if you meet the rest of the requirements.

spring/fall semesters are 16 weeks
summer/winter intersessions are 8 weeks

if you can place into ENG 1A then eng 68 wouldnt matter haha, but since you didnt it does matter. think of it as a step up a ladder lol. u cant skip it unless you pass that test.

Just wondering, how many units is one class such as Eng 1A?

Taking my placement tests later this week. Sounds like its not that easy to get into Eng 1A… Will be trying my best.

Hey guys, I’m currently finishing up my 1st year at Mt. Sac. I am in the Honors Program, and hoping to transfer too either UCLA or Berkeley after 2 years at Sac.

I can also try to answer some questions with Dainese …

@sunnybaNANA:
I was in the same situation as you coming coming out of highschool. I took the placement test, and got placed into ENG 68, which i was pretty disappointed about. HOWEVER, you mentioned you are taking AP English right now, as did I. I ended up passing my AP English exam with a 4 and that automatically places you into English 1A. So try to pass that test!

And reiterating what dainese said, if you are planning to transfer to top tier universities like UCLA, Berkeley, USC … JOIN HONORS.

@blackmamba:

Credit classes are usually 3 - 5 units. English 1A and 1C are both 4 units.

@blackmamba- dont be intimidated by the english test. theyre looking for the basics. sentence structure, organization (intro/thesis, body para 1, body 2, etc etc, coclu. back to the basics of topic sentence and transitions)

and yes AAW000 is right. 4 units for ENG 1A. usually all math/science/langauge (not social sciences) are going to be 4 units. you can check how many credits these classes are in the summer catalogue or online through myportal.

@AAW000 - btw thank you very much for stepping in to help
I actually dont know much about AP credits, so hopefully you can help in that department!
I really appreciate it. who are you? haha Im steve.

oh btw. i got accepted to USC :)

Dude dainese I was readin thru this thread and u mentioned about linda…yes she is an angel sent from heaven LOL she’s the most helpful person in my personal transferring process

Congrats Dainese!!!

@mstransfer - indeed she is. i cannot emphasize how much linda can change your world or turn it upside down haha

@blackmamba- thanks!!! i hope you do good at SAC man. ill be droppin by haha

Hey again!

I forgot all about registering for online appointment to see a counselor. However, I don’t know what category to pick for “counseling reason selection.” I’m just trying to get an appointment to get my classes…?

Also, which counselor would you recommend I go for? I don’t know much about anything Thanks again! Oh, and congrats Dainese!! :D

dont really recommend any counselor. they all fail IMO.
some have had good experiences some have not (IE me.)

i dont think you need to do it. but if you want go for it. under counseling reason…im sure anything is fine.

i would suggest getting into the honors program ASAP for THE best counselor and the ONLY one i recommend. linda diaz. all honors students will speak up for me when i say that LINDA is your savior.

^what do you mean I don’t need to do it? I am trying to register for summer classes and get my orientation done. So don’t I need to register? o_O Also, I’m gonna do that 9 units -> honors that you recommended :p

Edit: Oh, I just found the tab to register for classes Now i’m looking for the CRNs to add classes for summer -_-

i dont think seeing a counselor is mandatory. orientation is however.

you do need to register, sorry for the confusion.
you cant register for summer classes just yet. wait till about june and check your registration appointment.

once its your reg app time, only THEN can you add classes.

to see the CRN go to your “student tab”
under “registration” click “search for classes”
choose a class/prof/time etc etc. and it will show u a list of open/closed courses with all their info including prof name, CRN, time of class, how many people can take it, how many have registered for it, etc.

OPEN = good, means you can add it because there are still seats.
CLOSED = bad, means class is full.

Just giving you guys a heads up … unfortunately adding a class for the summer will be difficult because registration date goes by seniority, and they’ve cut down on classes too! However, they are implementing a waiting list starting this summer, so get on the waiting list if the class is full along with going the first day to try and add. I’m not sure how the waiting list works, but i’m sure you guys will figure it out. Good luck.

To anyone coming to Mt. Sac as a freshman in Fall 2010:

There is a program called “Connect 4”, which gives students coming out of high school priority registration for their first semester at Mt. Sac. Now, I don’t know if there are conditions to this (perhaps you have to be coming out of certain high schools to get priority), but its worth a try. Find “Mt. Sac’s High School Outreach” on the website and you’ll see their phone number. Ask them for more details. This program helped me a ton, as I got some essential classes out of the way first semester because I had priority reg.

good point. when i first came there wasnt connect 4, so i dont know much about it. however when i first started there were waitlists. basically waitlisting is like adding a class but there is less competition.

adding means you go to the class on the first day and hope its not full. if it isnt you get added and you have the class. if it is full (always is…) then some teachers will flip a coin, draw numbers, or some weird fashion of picking students to add. but for the most part most profs will add students by registration date. so the earlier registration date you have the more likely you are to get added.

wait list is the same concept. once your registration time comes along and you see a class is full, you add yourself to the waitlist. and you hold that spot. so lets say your on waitlist spot number 2. regardless if someones registration is earlier than yours, you added on the waitlist 2nd so they cannot pass you.this was how it worked for me. but im not sure how it is now.

when youre planning for classes be sure to literally make a list of classes/profs you want. have like atleast 10 back up classes or more.

thanks again mysterious AAW000 :)

Good info AAW000 and dainese. I’ll call and see what connect 4 is about.

Went to Mt Mac earlier this morning for the first time and took my English and math placement test. Hopefully I get 1A for Eng… I felt I did good. Got into Calculus for math but dont know if I should take it or not haha… def not in the summer for sure. Really nice campus IMO. Cant wait to go there for 2 yrs. lol

Called about connect4. You have to be in district of Walnut to be eligible and you have to do stuff to get in.

Damn it. I thought English results wouldnt be in till a couple days. Took the test this morning and just logged into my portal just now and saw English 68. smh…

Dont know if I should appeal…

or take a placement test at PCC and take 1A there. If I take 1A there, will I be able to take the level after 1A at SAC?

Just wondering, if I get placed into math 180 (calc), can I still take math 160(precalc)?

Ah, ok thought so. I went to Diamond Bar High School which is in the Walnut district, so I qualified for it. Oh well.

Hmm so you got into eng 68 … same thing happened to me last year, was aiming for Freshman 1A … ended up in 68. Luckily I took and passed the English AP test in high school so that counts as English 1A.

I would recommend just taking English 68. It is just one semester, which goes by SO fast. Then in Spring semester you can take 1A. Plus, if you are looking to join honors, and you didn’t have above a 3.5 GPA in high school, you would have to wait one semester anyways. So by spring semester, you will be in honors, and English 1A. Not bad. But if you really want to try and place into 1A at another college, by all means do it. Fullerton college, Chaffey college, are a couple close by to Mt. Sac.

Yes, I’m pretty sure if you place into calculus, you can still take Math 160. What is your intended major? Are you planning to transfer to anywhere in particular after Mt. Sac?
